A group, Initiative for Information, Arts and Culture Development, on Monday, announced plan to gather over 80 schools to mark and celebrate the 90th birthday of Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka.

The PUNCH reports that Soyinka, who was born in 1934, would be 90 on July 13, 2024.

The President of IACD, Kolade Mosuro, announced this in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, during a press briefing on events earmarked to celebrate the global icon.

The IACD boss said there were a plethora of programmes lined up for the exhibition, which include performances, stage plays, reading and others.

He said, “The students will know more about Soyinka who is a patriot, advocate of fair play, dramatist, artist, guitarist, music lover and nobel laureate. The students will learn from the icon’s story of rigorous study, reflection and growth.

“The Government College, Ibadan will stage The Lion and The Jewel directed by Jumoke Sobo; Childe’s International directed by Dele Morakinyo on July 19, 2024 at Bishop Philip Academy, Aperin, Ibadan; Isara: A stage adaption of Wole Soyinka by Femi Osofisan on July 26, 2024 by 5.00 p.m. at Wole Soyinka Theatre, University of Ibadan.

‘’Soyinka will be 90 on July 13, 2024. To mark the occasion, we will be mounting a first of its kind in the country special exhibition depicting his full life and have this on for a month from July 2 to July 31, 2024.

“The exhibition will trace his stellar life from birth to date. It will be a display of visuals, memorabilia with sound woven in a thematic manner to tell his rich and remarkable story.

’The exhibition venue is the premises of IACD, Magazine Road, Jericho, Ibadan. Several activities have been and are being held across the globe but what we are doing is different. Students of 80 schools will gather here to celebrate and see the exhibition. It is to inspire and rekindle the legacy of scholarship and creativity of Soyinka in the students.”

He said the exhibition would rekindle some interest in reading culture in the students.

“While the students would come daily, the general public could come in the afternoons and Saturdays. His life is a story of rigorous study, reflection and growth and a man of rare conscience in any part of the world.”

Mosuro, who was flanked by Tunde Awosanmi and Patrick Agwu, promised that IACD would celebrate the Soyinka in a unique way.

No need to be using racist in our own country. Wole Soyinka was made great, but still part of our problem. So kosi oro lenu baba mo. Tori wipe omo wa ti de ori alefa, kole soro soke mo. Very big shame to we true Yorubas.

No doubt, Wole Sonyinka is an achiever, but he is a constant reminder that education and exposure don't cure tribalism.

Listen, we know how this man went to Ojota to protest against Jonathan. He called Patience Jonathan names that someone of his social status shouldn't be seen calling the first lady of his country.

When Buhari came in, they had a good relationship. Over time, he started calling Buhari incompetent. Guess what, Buhari didn't destroy the economy half as much as Tinubu did. Despite that, Prof has remained silent.

Instead, whenever he speaks, it's always about Peter Obi and the OBIdients - calling young people who want a change of status quo in their beloved country a horrible name.

In conclusion, expunging tribalism and seneless attachment to one's own tribe has nothing to do with education and exposure. It's all about rectitude and willpower.

. Bro,with all due respect, you're one among the very few persons whom I respect so much here on Nairaland....

And I expect you to quite understand that,in life, there is what we call 'ideology' and everybody has got one or the other that he/she stands for,and no matter how the society may try to break such a person, he/she would rather die than let go off that ideology....... Funny as it may sound but I believe Professor Wole is one of those people who has such an ideology.....

Talking about the Jonathan's era,I was in My ND2 back then in poly ... And as a matter of fact,I was among the few youngies back then on campus who vehemently campaigned against his re-election.........Am I not a southerner like him? Yes,of course I'm.......But we thought Buhari was the messiah, just like many people do believe Someone today is gonna be their Messiah...But unfortunately,it all turned out to be a dream that later became a nightmare...

I'm sorry if my initial comment didn't go well with you,but that's just my own take....And the earlier a group of people start allowing others to be airing their own views on issues, the better for them....No be their papa buy me phone or data undecided

Was this not the man who brought cultism to Nigeria? When his Juniors in foreign countries like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Nikola Tesla, Satoshi Nakamoto, Steve Jobs, Bill Gate, Warren Buffett, etc were busy creating things that would be important to humanity, he was busy creating cultism embarassed

This is what I mean when I say Nigerian men can never be Innovative, they don't have brains for innovations and technologies!

I wonder how he feels seeing youths k!lling themselves from the disaster he established sad

Happy birthday in advance to Professor Soyinka! Wish you the best! However, it appears the latter days of the prof are more ignoble than his former. He drifted from being the mouth-piece of the downtrodden or freedom fighter to becoming the crusader of our oppressors. How bad!

BTW:

The day I started seeing actor Wale Ojo and Reno Omokri together was the day the actor lost my respect. Even from afar, I know Reno to be a bitter soul. A divisive individual who is hate-filled. A loquacious entity. An evil-minded personality, etc, how much more an international actor, who is close to him. They say, "show me your friend(s) and I will..."

In 1986, when African writers decided to boycott the Nobel Prize for the apparent discrimination from the Royal Academy (up until then, no African was considered good enough for the prize), Soyinka showed up as a betrayer of the African collective cause and got the award

.....Soyinka might have a Nobel Prize, but that is not surely a comment on his social value as a writer. Even Abdulrazak Gurnah who was awarded the prize in 2021 said he thought it was a joke. Nobody knew him and he knew he did not deserve it.

In contrast, Ngugi wa Thiong'O has consistently been ignored by the Royal Academy, even though everyone in the literary field knows he is supposed to have long won it on merit. To put things in perspective, he taught Gurnah way back, and has taught many other greats

Ngugi's sin is that he would never bend to the Western ideologies, and he has canvassed on different occasions for African writers and indeed, writers from the Orient, to develop literature in their languages, instead of enriching metropolitan languages.

The West hates people like Ngugi, and can never reward them with their treasured literary prizes like the Nobel. To be an African writer deserving of the award, you have to have no hurtful opinion about the West. It is basically politics by the institutions of World Lit.
Achebe cut the perfect figure for the prize, and it was not surprising that he got it in 1986. Canonised writers like Achebe who took on Greene and Conrad could not have been rewarded for questioning the jaundiced representation of Africans in Western literature

Achiebe being angry and bitter. At a time when he should have normally drawn closer to God and ask for forgiveness of sins.

At this time when thousands of our youth are being murdered for cultism, this is a very bad time to celebrate the person that created that monster. What are they trying to do? That cultism is bad? Soyinka himself has said it he's not a good role model

I explain to you that i now understand why the army was organized as it is. It was indeed quite necessary. No rational form of organization would serve the purpose. The purpose was to enable men with machine guns to kill unarmed men and women easily and in great quantities when told to do so. There is no place for courage, or manliness, or fitness in it.

I can never celebrate a fallen demon
