He doesn't directly control troops. No one will take an order from the CDS without the COAS.

This paragraph spoilt all the good point you've made

cool
In his full regalia.

BTW,that South African army chief hardly looks like one. He doesn't look like any war veteran atal. South Africa doesn't fight any internal war like Nigeria,I assume.

On a normal level, are soldiers supposed to be steadily fighting civilians in the same country?

1. you claim that the COAS is "the biggest boy in the room" because according to you "he holds the most direct power of command which matters in the Nigerian space" if the same you said that the COAS has done nothing for nigeria with his position and all the above, how then is he the "biggest boy in the room"?

2. if you say that the COAS "he holds the most direct power of command which matters in the Nigerian space", then how does him not being the president prevent him from using his position to do something for nigeria?

That's why una decided to bury him in the poultry farm where chickens are reared🤣🤣🤣

Go to America and other developed countries and see where their former leader are buried, nigeria is a typical zoo filled with illiterates - except for Igbo tribe who have been known to be exceptionally brilliant.

No wonder. You're are being called chest beater.

Ojukwu, Nnamdi Azikwe and co were all brought to life after been buried expensively. cool

Chief of Army Staff for only Army,,

We also have Chief of Air Staff for Air Force,,

And Chief of Naval Staff for Navy.

The Chief of Defense Staff is their boss!

Any General or even lesser rank that have operational control of troops like GOC's, commander of guards brigade are the boss not a ceremonial CDS, that will not even know when a coup happens and cannot order troops to crush it. Even that American CDS is a ceremonial position, infact all the American service chiefs Army, Navy and Airforce are all ceremonial with civilian secretaries of Army, Navy and Airforce who are their boss unlike Nigeria, and the real boss in the US military are the combatant commanders like the European command, African command. Centcom etc.

Shut the hell up, mumu! the CDS is a 4 star general how can you compare him with COAS who is a 3 star general.

While you’re correct about the US military unified command structure, you’re wrong to say that service chiefs are ceremonial. They are in an advisory role but they hold very strong indirect power. By convention, the president and defense secretary will not take any action without their recommendation.

Chiefs of staff plan and decide all US military responses and forward to the president and secretary for action.

During the Chinese balloon incident, Biden asked them if it could be shot down but General milley told them to wait till it got to the pacific. It was a controversial recommendation but that’s exactly what they followed.

Service chiefs are the ones who usually recommend whether US should strike a target or not. The United command generals are not involved in strategic decision making. They only command operations.

Why pls.

I'm not saying ur wrong, we can actually help each other understand better. But to the best of my knowledge how military works esp what I've been able to know thr my service in a military base, The one who has the higher rank commands more even if you both are same rank but seniors you with service number

It's just like you saying A soldier will rather obey a Brigadier General cuz he's the commander of his Brigade over a Major General who a chief of staff of a Division. Both have a post they head over yeah? but you have to understand, the chief of AF, Navy and the Army are all under the Chief of Defence staff and that's why the CDS is given a rank higher than all of them (even tho initially, they were all Major Generals) to command the necessary respect needed.

And let's also not forget they all report to him so he can take whatever concerns the military to the President and whatever the President order/directive to the Armed forces maybe, it'll be directed thr the CDS

Relating to ur first Paragraph, Do you mean the CDS tells the president what to do?

3rd Paragraph, Assuming Tinubu wants Nigeria to attack Mali, the CDS is the one that need to recommend if to attack or not?

The chain of command runs from the president through the secretary of defense to the combatant commanders totally bypassing the chairman and the joint chiefs, so yes they are a purely advisory and ceremonial post with no operational control on US troops. Even the civilian secretaries of the army, Navy and Airforce have more power in the scheme of things than the uniform joint chiefs, because the US go to great lengths to have total civilian control of their military.

I know. But you're misusing the word ceremonial.

I'm in the US. Most decisions made by the secretaries were on recommendation of the chiefs. The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff especially is very influential. He is the only service member in the Security council. The most high profile decision body of defense related matters. The branch secretaries are not there.

The JCS is America's top military adviser and most strategic recommendations come from him. The president does not formulate military decisions himself but usually act on recommendation of the joint chiefs chairman and Sec Def and turn them to military orders. They only reject recommendations for democratic and diplomatic reasons which hardly is the case.
