I graduated from the University 12 years ago. Since then I have been jumping from one job to another with no progress in sight. I discovered that I have been stagnant for Years, so I decided to learn a skill.

I started by learning how to make footwear, I learnt that for a year but I later discovered that it's not what I want to do, although I can make every type of footwear even boots.
Last year I took an online course in frontend web development, for 6 months I studied for an average of more than10 hours daily learning from HTML and now React.js. I learnt figma, scss, CSS, Version control, jquery, bootstrap, Chakra UI and react.js, it was a tough one because I had to forfeit other means of making money. I got hungry so many times, I used my last card to buy data so I can keep studying and doing my projects.

Earlier this month, I finished by portfolio project, I had already worked on 4 projects using react, Jquery, Chakra UI and bootstrap. I designed coupled of web pages using figma.

Earlier this month, my girlfriend who's a data analyst sent me a link for a front-end developer role. In my mind, I didn't feel like I was ripe enough so I didn't apply. 2 days later, I decided to give it a try and so I applied. I was called to come for interview this Monday.

On getting there, the company was working on this revenue web app project they are doing to for a particular state government. I was asked to develop the UI of one of the pages using react, CSS and Tailwind. I have heard of Tailwind before but I have never used it.
I told the interviewer that I have never used tailwind and that I'm proficient using bootstrap. He replied that I should go through tailwind documentation and then use it to style the page on top of react.

So I started reading the documentation, I discovered that it's syntax is somehow similar to Chakra UI which I have used once in my project, the are the same concept of class utility. So I decided to start coding, getting snippets from the documentation and then applying my Chakra UI knowledge to work around it.

To cut the long story short, I coded from 9am in the morning and delivered the page by 5pm.

I was sent an appointment letter today. So my tech journey officially started. It's a junior role though but I'm glad I broke the ice.

The salary is what I have never earned in a month since I was born. 😊
How can I reach you... Let me have your contact please or email

Good day everyone, I have been inspired by the comments and contributions of everyone of you and I must confess I really want to venture into the field of tech. Could anyone give a timeline on how to go about it? That is, where to start from, the steps, the programs, courses to take and so on. In all frankness, I'm completely ignorant in the coding line and I need someone to kindly explain the process to me. All contributions are accepted. Thanks.

If you're reading this and wondering whether what Mr is saying above is valid, just know he's wrong and his experiences is not what's generally happening in the tech industry.

Even if he's the CTO of Google and Facebook combined, don't take his word for it. In fact, Google, Microsoft, and Apple don't require a CS degree. In fact, if you can prove exceptional in what you do, they won't care if you didn't go to primary school.

All the knowledge you can get in a CS degree is available on the internet for free. You can learn whatever you wish from the internet. Top universities and schools release their CS curriculum and resources for people who wish to learn the fundamentals. The only difference is that you don't get to listen to a 70 years old lecturer read their experience and life history to you in a class setting despite never having work in tech all their life.

If there's one field where paper qualifications holds no inherent value, it's tech and the software industry.

To the author I'm quoting, I'd really like to know the knowledge you applied from your CS degree that helped you solved a problem at work. Be specific, be elaborate, and then explained why you concluded only people with a CS degree would come up with your solution.

God bless you... if we be honest, the Nigeria university system is absolute rubbish, outdated course lay out, out dated curriculums, out-dated lesson notes, lecturers recycling same lesson notes since 1980... and this is in all departments, no exceptions...

I read comment sections of those youtube course channels, I discovered most people even from universities in the abroad even with their updated curriculums and notes, they learn python, c, c++, Java, not Java script, then they come out to learn, css,Django, Javascript, etc online... then as a Nigeria you say a company requires a degree, what degree? ...

meta frontend coursera course.

Although, you will still need some other resource but this will teach all the basics.

Hi Op!
I know it's been a while you posted this, but I just wanted to ask if you were required to make a discounted payment prior to being enrolled for this course. Also in your view, how would you compare this meta front end course to IBM front end course?

I attempted taking the IBM Front End Course and was required to pay a discounted fee to be enrolled. I thought it was a glitch initially but now I can confirm it's real.

If you don't mind, what metrics support your verdict on meta being better compared to IBM?
Have you had a previous experience with any of the IBM courses?

Additionally, did you take any extra certification exam to land your job or you made do with the coursera professional certificate?

I took the frontend course meta and the backend course with IBM. IBM courses Dnt seem detailed and well-structured enough, as against the experience I had with meta.

To land a job here, no one care about your certification.

Everybody is making thier own money in thier own way

The real gist was someone with a remote job living in Nigeria has more disposable income than someone with the same job living in an European city .

The city that gave you the euros, pounds or dollars will take it back one way or ther other from you

On the other hand, Nigeria is 10x less costly for forex earners

That’s the discussion

My bro was getting 300 € here but when he traveled he was receiving €3988 for that same roll
While spending only 1+5k both for electricity, rent water and internet

Saving €2k+ Euros compare 2.8 million to ordinary 500k naira

He was probably getting scammed when he was receiving 300 euros back here

For the 300 Euros he was receiving in Nigeria there is also someone here in receiving the full 3988 euros without having to leave the shores of Nigeria

That’s just life bro

If a company decides to pay you rubbish money , then that’s just you being unlucky

Never compare anyone who has a good remote job to anyone who lives in Europe with the same job

I did IBM backend after meta frontend. I abandoned the IBM course because I was not getting what I wanted.
I had to learn nodejs from a 15 hours YouTube video I downloaded

Ok. Thanks. You gat persistence bro!

BTW, what has your experience been since your kickstarted a career as an IT professional? What could you have done differently in the past given what you now know about the Industry?
Kindly consider this a career advice to a brother from another mother.

To be sincere, I don't think I would have done anything differently, because I already knew that I had to learn programming concepts before going into frameworks and backend.
I am enjoying everything I do now in programming.

Now this kind of job is with a good perspective. What is related to technologies is now at the top.

You can take a course and learn something new. In addition, I have also found a team that is looking for some more a-players. In their team you can work as a Senior QA Engineer (web), Google Ads UAC Team Lead, Creative Producer etc.

It's always exciting, I wish you a quick adaptation. A solid approach is to study different strategic frameworks and learn from real-world cases. I recently came across an interesting breakdown of CTO strategies at https://patternica.com/blog/cto-stategies, which, while focused on tech leadership, offers insights that apply broadly to strategic decision-making. Another tip is to set aside dedicated time for deep thinking—away from daily tasks. Many business owners find value in structured planning sessions or even executive coaching to refine their approach. Have you tried stepping back and mapping out your priorities?
