The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has visited National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN and warned against spending money not appropriated by the National Assembly.

Chairman, House Committee on University Education, Hon. Abubakar Hassan Fulata, who made this known during the visit, said the lawmakers will not shy away from oversight which is one of the major responsibilities of the legislators with the view of ensuring transparency and accountability in the system.

Fulata said though university management like some of the government organizations can generate revenue internally and get grants from donor agencies but spending the money without regard to appropriation laws is an infraction.

According to him, a budget is an estimate of revenue (allocation from government, internally generated revenue, grants etc) and expenditure within a specified period of time. Adding that this budget proposal by the Federal Government Universities must be approved by the National Assembly and doing anything otherwise is illegal and unconditional.

Fulata also called for proper utilisation of fund in the university for the seek of sustainable growth and development of the country.

Responding to questions on why the committee embarks on oversight visit to universities, Fulata said it is not about witch-hunting but routine exercise in line with constitutional provisions.

He said a report of their observations will be written and action will be taken on it.

The House Committee on University Education under the leadership of Fulata had recently visited University of Abuja and University of Ilorin, Kwara State.

Responding to the visit, Vice Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria, Professor Olufemi Peters thanked the committee for the visit and promised to provide relevant pieces of information and documents requested by the legislators.

He noted that the visit of the lawmakers has opened their eyes to certain areas they need to improve on their services in NOUN.

What are they doing to address the challenges facing the school, the federal government generates a lot of money from NOUN more than any other university and yet they ignore issues raised by the students

It's always amusing to me when people assume that obtaining a degree from NOUN is easy.
Most graduates from conventional universities wouldn't survive 5 semesters at the National Open University of Nigeria.
In Nigeria, NOUN is unmatched in upholding academic standards and discipline. There are no opportunities for bribing lecturers or cheating, unlike other universities where grades can be bought by warming a lecturers bed or fueling his car

The administration and leadership of the school have been the ones sabotaging the advancement of the institution... The president approved NYSC, yet NOUN students haven't served. The fracas between NOUN law faculty & the council for legal education also could have been curtailed if they had found a way to agree on it...

We have UNISA doing well as an open university in South Africa and a large chunk of SA citizens have graduated from there. We don't value our own things here...

I didn't believe that until I enrolled and I have seen the difference, sitting for exams just you and your system any little mistake in letters or inputting wrong word you will be marked down automatically no area of concentration, read and understand otherwise you will regret it. But the lecturers should be made to carryout their online facilitation, they are too lazy.

You will explain tire grin grin grin You'd better drop out and get yourself enrolled in a conventional university because you will regret wasting your time and money getting a degree from that university. Here at my workplace, three applicants were rejected. They were told the truth: this company will not accept any certificate from NOUN.

This suggests you are working in one small, outdated organization.
A 2.2 graduate from NOUN is academically stronger than a first-class graduate from any other Nigerian university.
NOUN certificates are highly sought after and recognized by organizations and academic institutions in Europe and America.

Your company should be sued. NOUN is a recognised and NUC accredited university and no company or organization is supposed to reject certificates from NOUN.

Those applicants are supposed to let NOUN aware and they will be sued

It's really funny how a lot of Nigerians look down on their own. I work with SI-UK and these major universities(US, UK, CAN, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND and IRELAND) accept NOUN degrees. I know how many NOUN graduates I send abroad every year. We are our own enemies really.
