Lamentations that touch the heart...of course these are testimonies from his own family so did anyone expect them to speak ill of their traitor far Banjo? The real facts of what happened in the infamous Midwest advance of August-Sept 1967 are there in the archives of history...true accounts and narratives recorded by neutral parties including international observers who witnessed the war and recorded Banjo's treachery...for the silly whiners saying Banjo was killed because he was Yoruba, some Yoruba officers like Adeleke, Ademoyega fought with Biafra to the end... Major Adeleke even wrote a book on his experiences of the war,how come they were not framed for treachery or killed cause they were yoruba? Ojukwu's biggest mistake of that war was giving command to an unstable fellow like Banjo, that's like giving command to the devil to lead a legion of demons to conquer hell... a logical and tactical diasater...a known warrior like Achuzia who noy only came from the same Midwest but had no personal and sinister ambitions like Banjo would have done a clinical job...maybe by now history will be recorded in a different context...maybe would have gotten their oduduwa...maybe Nigeria won't be the forced unity shit.hole it is now, fu.ckk Banjo, bloody traitor

What's this one rambling about? Did Ojukwu ever win anything without Banjo? Ojukwu won nothing without Banjo 'cos Banjo was the mastermind behind every battle! That's the fact! Why didn't the coward Ojukwu marched down to Ore, after the failed invasion?

And don't make me laugh at your labelling Banjo a traitor.. The fact is Banjo and his armies were defeated and chased back to the Midwest. I'm really baffled as to why he even joined hands with a known cowardly bastard as Ojukwu when he should have left that fool to perish on his own.

Funny enough, it was Ojuwku who betrayed Banjo by choosing to attack the Midwest when Banjo wanted a different tactical approach and also, the overwhelming support of the Midwest folks but the foolish Ojuwku turned what could have been a great support from the midwest to suspicions which spread far and wide to the SW. In fact, what really rile me the most is the fact that Ojukwu wanted to employ such violence approach on the SW! What nerves and audacity? What a loser! Btw, blame your loser of a man, Ojukwu for his foolishness, not Banjo.

WHY VICTOR BANJO WAS ARRESTED BY IRONSI

In his memoir titled "Tragedy without heroes" page 36 and 37, former Biafran Army commander, Brigadier Hilary Njoku wrote

LOL. Only a Biafran can believe this nonsensically concocted tale, with no head and no tail.

The same thought did initially crossed my mind but then i recalled how, all the Jan' 15 coupists were all transfered to the eastern region and were consequently released by ojukwu and conscripted into his rag-tag army.

I doubt if Ojukwu gave them that much options, anyway: it's either they join his Biafran Liberation Front(sic) or rot in prison (Lt. Col. Hilary Njoku spent the entirety of the war in ojukwu's gaol simply because he did not agree with ojukwu's strategy in conducting the war) or worse still, get shot as "sabos".

This explains more why Ironsi and Ojukwu were fearful and wary of Victor Banjo.

First of all, let me tell you this, when the British were here, we were the last Nigerian officers to be commanded by the British soldiers. (He called for a picture hung on the wall of his sitting room to be brought down to show the first set of Nigerian military officers at that period). The senior person to me in Nigeria was Bassey, the second was Aguiyi Ironsi. The Igbos wanted to rule. Why they wanted to rule was that (Nnamdi) Azikiwe was the then Governor-General and more or less Head of State. The constitution did not give any power to Azikiwe. So, this annoyed the Igbo people and they used to say: “How can we run a constitution in which the Head of State cannot advise the government, the government cannot contact the Head of State for any advice?” So, the answer was well to take over since they were already leading and yet they had no control over the government. That was why the Igbo soldiers decided to organise a coup. But at that time, there were four major leading officers which included me, Yakubu Gowon, Bassey and Ojukwu. Igbo people relied on Ojukwu for the coup and they were able to convince the Yoruba. Ojukwu and Banjo now contacted me and Gowon for a coup. But we refused.

How many of you refused to participate in the planned coup then?

Gowon and I refused and they went on their own. But we then reported to that European officer, General Foster. I and Gowon reported to him that some people were trying to plan a coup. He called all of us — the Nigerian Army officers — and advised us not to organise any military coup. When Ojukwu´s father heard about this, he put a memo into House of Assembly that all Europeans should leave the army. It was that year that all the Europeans in the army were sent back to their country. Then, Ironsi, who was Number Two, took over the command of the army. While he was there, Ojukwu still had the coup plot in his mind. He told Ironsi that he should not allow Ejoor and Gowon to be in Army Headquarters, saying as long they remained in Army headquarters, they would not be able to execute the coup. So, Ironsi sent Gowon on a course in the United Kingdom but he left me alone.[/b] When Igbos were worrying him that Ejoor was still there, he told them that: “This man from that small state, minority state? You can handle him, he cannot do anything. Go away, and leave me.” So, he left me. By December when Gowon came back, it was like a small war in Ironsi´s office. Some army officers told Ironsi that: “We told you to send these two people away, now Gowon has come back. What can we do now? Ironsi was embarrassed and after Gowon came back on the 20th and on the 23rd of that month, Ironsi now sent me away from Army headquarters to Enugu, saying: “He should be hidden there.” I went there and then they tried again but the one they tried was in January 1966 after I had left the Army headquarters. But at that time, they said whatever happened, Ejoor and Gowon must die. They threatened the person who was to organise a coup on behalf of the Igbos in Lagos side.

Osyabj:
As one commentator noted, Victor banjo, was a typical afonja. 99% of adult Yoruba cannot be trusted. period.

Despite being brought up in Lagos and speaking yoruba fluently, the biggest mistake Ojukwu made in the entire Biafra war effort is to trust a Yoruba man to lead the fight to enemy command in dodan baracks, Lagos. Ojukwu let his friendship to an afonja, becloud his judgement.

The fact is that in war among nations the object of each side is to as speedly as possible decapitate the enemy leadership command headquaters.

During the US invasion of Iraq, the US target was simple, take over Bagdad with lightning speed. As soon as the US tanks entered Bagdad, the war was over. Sadam went underground and was eventually caught, hiding in the gutter, and he was killied like a common rat.

So the bottomline, is that knowing that absolutely NO adult afonja can be trusted, Ojukwu should have had a Non Afonja lead the charge to dodan baracks, Lagos. Biafra could care less about liberating the western region. The target was not western civilians but to decapitate tbe enemy leadership residing in dodan baracks , Lagos. If the Nigerian capital then was in Abuja, Biafran forces would be trying to get to Abuja as fast possible.

In fact, while Banjo's co-sabotuer, col Ifeajuna was about to be shot, he laughed and stated openly that him and Banjo's sabotage of the Ore advance has permanently stopped the Biaran advance to Dodan baracks.

After Banjo and Ifeajuna sabotage in Ore, the British, the Russians openly and the US (quietly) provided massive amount of fire power and manpower to the Nigeria side and thus Biafra could not withstand the combined firepower of 3 world superpowers who were sheeding Biafran blood solely for the Biafra oil. Today 97% of Biafran or Eastern Nigerian oil is controlled by Hausas and Yorubas.

Bottomline victor Banjo and Ifeajuna were not just plotiing a coup against Ojukwu, but in words of Col Ifeajuna, were working secretly for the Nigerian side to destroy Biafran's advance to Dodan baracks.

Had the afonja betrayer and traitor, banjo and his co-conspirator, Ifeajuna not betrayed and sabotaged the biafran advance in Ore, Biafra would have taken the enemy headquaters of dodan baracks within days of their betrayal.

So banjo kids should read Col Ifeajuna's exact quote and stop lying like most untrustworthy afonjas, today.

May traitors, Afonja Banjo and Ifeajuna's souls rest in the hottest part of hell. But for their treachery along with Awolowo's, there would be 3 independent nations of Biafra, Oduduwa and Arewa today!
ifeajuna was working secretly for nigeria.. he was also secretly working for nigeria when he was among those who killed the northern leaders.Do you see how daft you sound? some of you do not reason all you do is shout afonja afonja when you can't think critically and comprehend the simplest of things. I wonder the form of education you had.

A man at 78yr committed suicide? Lol.

How old was Ojukwu when he died? Same 78! Should we then say he committed suicide seeing that he was even senile and foaming in the mouth, compared a man that died sleeping like a beauty on his death bed? Heck! Awo's dead body was displayed for many days and no sign of poison was found in him.

Anyway, pray you get to reach that age.
That is the propaganda those eediots have vowed to spread and tell their generations yet unborn just to discredit the great awolowo. They know they lost the war because of awolowo,Simple. I find it laughable when they say he committed suicide when it is glaring he was 78, an old man. Ojukwu passed on at 78, achebe didnt make 78. But though keep the hate burning, they spread malicious lies against the revered leader. I feel sorry for their young generation who have refused to seek knowledge but take on fables.

#VictorBanjo: The Children Speak

by Deji Yesufu

Today, September 1, 2017, the scheduled media project to shed light on the person and life of Brigadier Victor Adebukunola Banjo begins.

To kick start the project, the first son of the late Nigerian army officer, Dele Victor-Banjo, shall be speaking through an article. I have decided to serialize that article in three parts and shall begin publishing today.

Following his, Banjo's first child, Funto Banjo Oyeleye, will have the floor with her own article. She will be shedding light on happenings in their home that morning of January 17th, 1966. Since she is the oldest, she alone has the best recollection of the day their father was arrested.

Olayinka Banjo Omigbodun, Banjo's third child, will be speaking through an article on her father also. After her, we hope to have something from Adeyemi Banjo, the Banjo family youngest child. He was six months old when their father was arrested.

There will be videos made on their father. And some of the articles here will be published in national dailies. There will also be radio and newspaper interviews.

The month of September, 2017, is a solemn month for the Banjo family. They would rather have spent this month in quiet solitude. But journalists like us have gotten them out to speak.

I therefore request that comments made on these threads with hash-tag Victor Banjo be made with due respect to them and their late father.

Following their own media project, I'll begin to publish my book on their father: The Story of Victor Banjo. The book will be available on Amazon.com and Okadabooks.com. Watch out for it.

Thank you.
Bump.
Victor Banjo... 56 years later as of 2023.

United Nigeria for whose benefit? Why would you want a united Nigeria that is structured to enslave you and your unborn generation?

This is the more reason why you should read the book on him later to be published this month.

I'll argue that Banjo made the right decision to stay and fight for a united Nigeria. It is those who decided to kill him that should be held responsible for his death.

I can assure you that there was no such agreement. smiley The order to free Awolowo came from Gowon; even though Ojukwu could have refused to release him if he chose to. Problem was Ojukwu felt Awolowo owed him for this show of magnanimity; and chose not to consult with Awolowo and expected Awolowo to court him (when it should have been the other way round). Gowon was wiser and actively courted Awolowo. That made the difference.

Ojukwu appointed Banjo, despite the vehement protests of the Biafran High Command, to lead the Mid-West and West assault but Banjo, a typical Yoruba man, couldn't resist the urge to prove his naysayers right.
Banjo was the biggest mistake Ojukwu made and he regretted it till his death.
The mere fact that Gowon's plane was already running so that he would jet out at any time says a lot.

So Victor Banjo disobeyed direct orders from Ojukwu and was later killed for treason?

Why are people accusing Ojukwu of betraying Banjo when Banjo seems to have been the betrayer?

His family were trying to dress it up as much as possible but any student of history can read between the lines: Banjo faced a dilemma at Ore and eventually went with the decision that was not in Biafra's interests.

Victor Banjo disobeyed Ojukwu, but that was not why he was killed. Victor Banjo actually returned to Enugu from the Midwest Region and was moving around freely in Enugu

The reason why Victor Banjo was executed can be read in the book "No PlaceTo Hide: Crises and conflict in Biafra" by Ben Odogwu, a young military intelligence officer in Biafra. After Victor Banjo returned, he held a meeting with 3 Igbo officers, Ifeajuna, Alale and Abam. All 4 men conspired to arrest and remove Ojukwu. They tried to recruit others into the plot, including Ben Odogwu. What they did not know was that Ben Odogwu was very loyal to Ojukwu. He went to a meeting with Victor Banjo and others at progress Hotel Enugu where they discussed the plot to arrest Ojukwu, they didn't know that Ben Odogwu was secretly recording the entire thing with a recording device in his briefcase. He took the recording to Ojukwu who immediately ordered the arrest of Banjo, Alale, Ifeajuna and Abam

All 4 men were tried by a Military tribunal headed by Lt Col Okonkwo. The transcript of the trial is also in Ben Odogwus book. Victor Banjo at first vehemently denied the plot, but when the recording was played at the tribunal, he gave up. The tribunal passed down death sentence for treason, and all 4 men were executed by firing squad at Enugu firing range

This is another thing that people don't know about Banjo's death. Victor Banjo was not executed alone, he was executed along with 3 other Igbo men for plotting to remove Ojukwu

Ojukwu did a lot for Victor Banjo, they were friends l. It was Ojukwu that released Victor Banjo from jail along with Ifeajuna, Nzeogwu, and others who were locked up in the East after the January 1966 coup. Ojukwu gave Banjo a suite in Government house Enugu to live. Ojukwu gave him a command in the Biafran Army and promoted him to Brigadier

Col. Victor Banjo was not involved in the Jan. 15th coup rather, he was arrested for (allegedly) plotting to topple Ironsi's illegitimate govt. on the 17th of Jan. 1966.
Yeah, Ojukwu did a lot for Banjo and subsequently, sent him on a one-way mission to wreck havoc on his father's land, ahead of Ojukwu's ragtag Biafran liberation Front.

Lol. It's sad you chose to propagate lies but then I checked your monicker and of course, I wasn't surprised.

Victor Banjo maintained his innocence to the very end. There was never any point at which he accepted the charges as you've fraudulently claimed. Ojukwu was a paranoid egomaniac who felt threatened by the senior officers who had previously been in the Nigerian army. It is well-known and has been written about extensively.

Even Nzeogwu was eliminated in "mysterious" circumstances. And if you want to argue, I will give you evidence from the writings of Igbo authors.

After the discussion, I learnt that Lt Col Victor Banjo was caught while forcing himself into the Supremo's office with a sub-machine gun and a beretta pistol, all loaded and cocked. George Kurubo and Major Anwunah had arrested him. Outside the building, Victor Banjo had a group of armed men seated in a landrover.

Just listen to this story...so a man armed with a sub-machine gun and pistol, with a large group of men with him, was arrested by two men without a single shot being fired. The extent to which persons have gone in justifying the injustice meted against Banjo is incredible.

If you were Ojukwu, wouldn't you have done what he did? Wouldn't you try to get the government of Gowon in Lagos down? Now how could Ojukwu have done that without entering Yoruba land? Ojukwu was never after Yorubas, or Yoruba land, he was after Gowon and his Northern goons in Lagos

The mistake Ojukwu made was believing that it was better to entrust command of the expeditionary force to someone from that part of Nigeria.

It was a once in a generation opportunity lost, for had that Biafran expeditionary force managed to reach Lagos and kick Gowon out, back to the North, the Western Region, the Midwest Region and Biafra would have Been 3 seperate countries today

Instead, Southern Nigeria is more or less a slave of the North today.

Oh well, the good thing is that it's all of us that will suffer the failure of Nigeria equally

Look, Ojukwu was in Biafra, there was no way he could be threatened by former officers of the Nigerian Army, in Biafra. People like Nzeogwuand Ifeajuna were far junior to Ojukwu, even when they were in the Nigerian Army

I suggest you go read Ben Odogwu's book, read the chapter on the arrest and trial of Banjo, read the transcripts.

Ojukwu had nothing to gain by killing Banjo. Banjo was executed along with Ifeajuna, Alale and Abam for plotting to topple Ojukwu

In the military, if you plot to topple your boss, and you are discovered, you will be eventually executed, no sentiments.

What Banjo should have done if he was not happy with Ojukwu, was to resign his commission and leave Biafra. But he stayed to cause problems and payed the price

Equally, go and read The Nigerian Revolution and the Biafran War by Alexander Madiebo. he details the great lengths Ojukwu went to undermine the Biafrans who had been in the Nigerian army, which was one of the direct and indirect causes of the failure of the war.
