Maybe, but the problem with the oil sector always has been selling petrol below what it costs to make it, or what it costs to import it.

Subsidizing petrol is a very expensive thing. That's the real reason why protests don't work. Even the famous 2012 protests did not work because at the end fuel prices still rose... because subsidy costs in 2011 were thrice that in 2010. If GEJ had not removed subsidy partially, by 2014 he would have been using the entire budget to pay for subsidy. And, that is not funny.

Even if we protested now, and tinubu listened and set prices at 100 naira, subsidy costs would exceed 1000 per liter. Over 70% of our budget would go to paying subsidy. The resultant deficit would need loans to cover. More loans. Already the subsidy we have now is forcing govt to take more loans.

Not everything is tribe. If obi was president today, the same issue would be there.

All in all, you sell at a loss, problems start. In 1984 government was forcing people to sell sugar , milk and bread at knock down price to help the poor. Result, people selling could not make a profit to buy new stock, scarcity resulted. We don't have that today because subsequent governments did not repeat that mistake
Protests is not a Solution, but it's an indication that there are serious issues that need to be addressed by Govt.

The problems of Nigeria are beyond Obi or any single individual, as long as Tribal, Religious and Sectional interests are prioritised over National Interests.
Apart from those who believe Obi would have made a better President (arguable), the clamour for Obi was also for Sectional interests - to give S/East sense of inclusiveness in National affairs.

Agreed, prices of goods & services in a free Capitalist Economy ought to be determined by forces of Demand & Supply, but the consequences in Nigeria would be dire for a commodity like Fuel.

But fundamentally, Nigerians owe far greater allegiance to their Ethnicity than Nationality, and are not ready to unite to build a Nation.

I rest my case.

The clown of a minister said he understands the frustration of Nigerians.

Ask him if he was on a queue recently?

Also ask how much of his money he is using to fuel the cars he is currently using?

They'd just open their mouths and spew insensitive statements, rather than working

You sell something at 720 that cost you 1000 naira to bring in, and you don't expect there to be issues?

U this nigga, u dey always around defending ur oppressors & the elites.... Anytime talk about taxes, subsidy or electricity is brought about, U crawl out of ur cave & vehemently defend the political elite with every fibre of ur being.

So far Ur masters had don every single thing you mentioned but INSTEAD THEY MADE the economy so catastrophic to d extent they are even lost & confused on how to bring it back the way it was.

Like I always said, agbadorians like Helinues are very straight forward with thier allegiance. But people like u who pretend 'neutral' while stylishly defending incompetence, embezzlement & chronic capitalism are extremely dangerous

how many countries are using tankers to supply PMS or supply AGO; it is not done. Naturally, what is done is the use of pipelines, and in some cases, they use rails.

This is one of our issues for many years. Remember Bunkering and corruption. Millions of litre of fuel diverted and they will send miscreants to go and burst the pipe line.

Remember jesse fire that year in 90s.

(1) Tribalism in service of political ambition was a major motivation for the Occupy Nigeria protests. We can acknowledge that, it's fact.
Tribalism is why there's no protests now.

(2) If Nigerians had applied logic instead of tribalism in Jan 2012, this problem wouldn't exist in 2024. That's the point πŸ‘‰

And thanks for a less condemnatory take on the efforts of President Jonathan to abolish fuel subsidies.

(3) Your recall of the consumer commodity price controls of 1984 is in order. Who was the President back then? Muhammadu Buhari. He destroyed the Nigerian economy in less than 6 months. President IBB rescued Nigeria by putting in place SAP policies that are responsible for ALL the productivity in the Nigerian economy today.

Buhari, Tinubu and their APC allies are SOCIALISTS.

The people who broke away from PDP under President Jonathan to join APC were also SOCIALISTS, or at least they believe in continued government control of economic resources and prices.

Nigerians have become a very socialist people. That's a major reason they voted for APC and there's nothing wrong with that. Note however that there will be little economic development until they change that mentality.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

All this is just a strategy for dangote to come in at a profitable price, it's not dangote's fault anyway, what the government really need to fix ASAP is the exchange rate of the naira,if that is not addressed then Nigerians should just brace up for perpetual difficulties in virtually all the spheres of our national Life.

Crude oil prices account for 67% of the price of petrol.

Between 2010 and 2012, crude oil prices averaged above $100, so petrol prices were also at historic highs.

Presently crude oil prices are about $80 per barrel. Why is the price of petrol in Nigeria at all-time highs?

You are like a doctor trying to cure malaria with Panadol. Until you understand the problem, all your comments are simply generalisations people accept as facts, whereas in reality, add no value whatsoever to solve Nigeria's complex issues.

You this guy I remember last two year when you was rigorously canvassing for removal of subsidies I pointed out this same issue facing us at the moment and I opined that subsidy cannot be totally removed that it’s impossible now the NNPC is paying 3 times more than before and yet things as astronomically increased over time. Tell me what has been the Gain of subsidy removal. ?? If you can give me 3 good point then I would be sold on your subsidy removal campaign.

Please think through whatever argument you're making in order to make sense to any person with even rudimentary knowledge. And this issue is a VERY SIMPLE one to figure out. First of all, what what the exchange rate in the period 2010 to 2012? Maybe petrol stations in Nigeria should start charging in dollars!

Secondly, most petrol or gasoline used in Nigeria right now and for many years has been imported from the USA and Europe. As of today, the price of petrol traded on the commodity exchanges in the USA is $2.51 per gallon or $0.62 per liter. Here's the link for a live quote:

https://www.investing.com/commodities/gasoline-rbob

The cost in naira should be 0.62 X 1530 = ₦941 per liter + transportation, taxes and fees.

That's the price NNPC or whoever pays to import petrol from USA or Europe. So what price should Nigerians pay for the product?

This is NOT a complicated matter at all.

Good Luck to Nigeria.
