Yobe State Police Command has arrested Mallam Auwalu Haruna, a self-proclaimed marabout, for alleged abduction and impregnation of a 20-year-old lady.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the police recorded 34 cases of gender-based violence (GBV) and related crimes between January and June 2024, with 85% currently undergoing trial and a few convictions secured.

He stated that the latest incident came to light when the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Headquarters received a complaint from Alhaji Mohammed Kellu that his daughter had been abducted by Mallam Auwalu Haruna on June 6, 2024.

Following a thorough search, the victim was found in the suspect’s custody in Anguwan Arewa, Gaya LGA, Kano State.

A medical examination revealed that she was two months pregnant.

The Victim disclosed that she was coerced into drinking a medicinal concoction, which rendered her unconscious and vulnerable to the perpetrator’s actions.

He added that the State CID has launched an investigation into the incident.

My problem is the way these stories are constructed. It's hard to believe them. If she was abducted a month ago and she's 2 months pregnant, how are they to know if it's the guy that got her pregnant? All these so-called marabout and prophets are fond of camping female followers in their homes. They should properly ask both of them serious questions

Legalize prostitution

Prostitution should be legal. Change the name to a profesisonal one, like “sex worker.” "Escort" or "Professional Happy Endings (PHE)"

Once it’s legal, members of the profession should be licensed and regulated, just like hair dressers, real estate agents, doctors and lawyers. They should be required to pay taxes on their earnings, get regular health checkups, and have their STD status available for view for any client who asks. They would have minimum ages for both members and clients. (But no maximum age, of course).

From there, they could then form a union if they like to keep standards up. They could set basic standards of conduct. (Sheets should be changed with every client). They might even have formal examinations for those who want to get into the biz. Schools would inevitably spring up, as there are now for pole dancing in advance countries. Advertising would be legal, and they could even lobby for better legislation.

All these would generate lots of economic activity, which benefits everyone. Hotels could offer that it as one of their services up front and honestly, and get a cut of the fees. It would reduce crime, rape and get pimps out of the biz. Abuse of sex workers would decline, and the clients would have to treat the workers with the same respect as they do other professional workers. (Tips should be encouraged for better service). Prices could be openly displayed, which create real competition.

Of course, the industry would likely mature as others have. You would still have your “mom and pop” prostitution office, but others would have classy storefronts in shopping malls . Everyone would rate the companies on Yelp and other social media cites.
