States Records Of Election Into Local Govt Council Since 1999 by OredoPikin: 3:52am On Jul 12 |
As part of the transition programme from military regime to elected civilian government, local government elections were conducted in 1999 across the country for a three-year term. At the expiration of the tenure of Local Governments in 2002, it was expected that election would be conducted immediately, more so as the country was in a democratic dispensation. Unfortunately, it was not so. While the consistent attempts by state governments to weaken local governments in the country is not yet new, the complacency of the federal government and the possible complicity in the delay of Local Government election is disturbing. The state government all over the country are not interested in conducting election in the Local Councils across the country because the non-conduct of election gave them the absolute control over Local Government machinery in their respective states. It is sad that the state government have failed to appreciate the fact that Local Government is fundamentally an integral part of democracy. They have undermined Section 7(1) of 1999 constitution which guarantees democratically elected Local Government council across the country, only few states had witness election since 1999 till date. The diagram below shows states where election has been conducted from 1999 to 2019 https://www.researchgate.net/publication/333267851_Local_Government_Administration_in_Nigeria_A_Historical_Perspective#pf15

Nairaland mods should always try to verify things before pushing to front page. That the propaganda is coming from Reno doesn't mean it should always be pushed to front page. Obi conducted local govt election once, likewise Tinubu only very few governor conducted local govt election more than once and majority didn't even conduct SEUN and nairaland mods, stop spreading and enabling fake news and propagandas. Even if it will drive traffic for you because its obi matter, resist the temptation to spreading fake news 3 Likes |

Please can we ask Tinubu and others why they conducted local govt election just once in their 8yrs. Nairaland mods of fake news and propagandas, Obi conducted local govt election as a governor. This one may not get to front page immediately But, Thank you 2 Likes

OredoPikin:Peter Obi and Tinubu's tenure as governors can be equated according to LG elections. Reason: when the 1999 class of governors, NASS And president were sworn in, theu were sworn in with LG chairmen because INEC was the one who conducted the election alongside the general election. So every state had LG election. After their tenure, Lagos state and a few states then proceeded to replace continue hence only one LG election could have been held under the 8-year tenure of the governors of the 1999 class. As for Peter Obi, LG elections in Anambra while he was governor should have been 2. Be he delayed it until January 2014. According to him it was because of litigations that could not be settled for 10 years. It should also be noted that Obiano won the gubernatorial election in November 2013 meaning Peter Obi held election after election and it was more or less him imposing these chairmen on the next government as he could have simply thunder over and allow the incoming governor handle it. Peter Obi didn't work with democratically elected LG chairmen. Even the once elected while he was governor were there for just two months 6 Likes 1 Share |

Out of 8 years as Anambra state governor, Peter Obi only conducted election in the last year of his tenure which was even forced by court order. Why do some of you always struggling with bitter truth like this 24 Likes 2 Shares |

Mynd44:You are a nairaland mod and u spread half baked information. Anambra local govt election was conducted in January 2014 and they were inaugurated immediately. That election was conducted by Obi govt. It is a very big disinformation for you now to come and say obi never conducted local govt election whereas he did. Secondly, Obiano was sworn in March 2014, the elected local govt chairmen were sworn in January 2014. It is a very wrong information to say obi didn't work with elected local govt chairmen, even if he worked with them for a single day, that your statement became false. Thirdly, the local govt chairmen elected in 1999, their tenue ended in 2002, why didn't Tinubu conduct election immediately to fill the roles but instead waited 2yrs after, is the seat supposed to be vacant even for a day? If Tinubu had conducted LGA election in 2002, he would have had chance to do another one in 2005 So clearly your statement on that is biased and completely false Again, like obi clearly stated, he was distracted by many litigations, impeachment and others. He didn't even settle in his first tenure. It was in the second tenure that he actually settled I drop my pen and await your response 3 Likes |

helinues:How many times Tinubu conducted out of 8yrs? Obi for me only did 4yrs with rest of mind. His first 4yrs, he was jumping from court to court Do u even know that after he was sworn in in 2006, another election was held in Anambra in 2007 that produced Andy uba as governor and he has to step aside and go to court again to rectify that. OredoPikin: Given how you people packaged Obi, I am disappointed in the timing of that kangaroo election. It is better to not even conduct the election at all. How is conducting election two months to the tenure expiration different from a governor borrowing money few weeks to the end of his administration. If you have any integrity in you, you would have moral questions about the timing of that election. I have absolutely no problem with Obi, but his supporters. You guys elevated him above the average Nigerian politician, even though he has many baggages that were carefully suppressed by Obidients. You viciously attack those who are curious enough to find him out. Obi does not deserve the hype Obidients give him. He is just like any other politician that is deceitful, greedy, pretentious and pseudo-democratic. A better pitch for Obi presidency would have been to have a president of Igbo ethnicity, which is very valid, given that the SE have been excluded politically at the federal level. Due to arrogance, cunning and deceit, Obidients decided to market him as some messiah with impeccable administrative credentials. Shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4 Likes |

Tinubu conducted local government elections once, and Peter Obi conducted local government once, but Reno Omokri, as usual, wants to massage the ego of Tinubu, and BATerians falsely claimed that Peter Obi never conducted local government elections. Truly, Reno Omokri is a rabble rouser; only BATerians take him seriously. |

helinues: From the attached screenshot, Lagos State conducted local government elections in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2017. Tinubu was governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007, which invariably means that he conducted local government elections just once in 2004. So where is the lie there? Honestly, you are losing it all. |
Re: States Records Of Election Into Local Govt Council Since 1999 by Atuero(m): 8:34am On Jul 12 |
Mynd44: What happened to the Governors that conducted election in 2007? Were they not Tinubu class of 1999 Governors? Those ones were able to conduct twice before the expiration of their tenure, you are only appealing to our emotions Did you observe from the table that Anambra was the only state that did not conduct elections with other in 2004?.....it has shown that OBI was the first Anambra Governor to have conducted Local Government elections after 14yrs and 2 predecessors.....that's a feat This is a practical explanation that something was wrong with the state and it took OBI to correct it. Finally, has there been anything election at the LG level in Nigeria? It is all charades of formalities to select their stooges Now that Tinubu through Supreme Court is trying to empower the LGA, let's see how it goes because LG elections in Nigeria is a mere avenue to siphon our patrimony Kudos to Enugu state for have 5 LG selection (elections) same with kano |
