Judge hands out prison time in Enron barge scam

Ex-Enron, Merrill execs sentenced. A repentant Boyle gets nearly four years for his involvement in barge scandal

May 13, 2005

Former Enron executive Dan Boyle was sentenced to nearly four years in prison Thursday, while Robert Furst and William Fuhs, both former Merrill Lynch bankers, received more than three years — all for their roles in the Enron Nigerian barge scam.

Boyle, sentenced to three years and 10 months in prison and fined $320,000, was the only one who appeared repentant about pushing through a sham sale of energy-generating barges to the bank so Enron could pump its earnings and bolster its stock price.

"I'm the only one responsible for my actions and omissions and for the pain I caused each and every person I affected," the Clear Lake resident told the judge. "I'm truly sorry."

Every time I see the post of the collapse building I get very angry and sorrowful, I just feel the pain of the parents
That building looked like a building with lots of sand than concrete in the mixture. You can see it from the wall part of those still standing that tore apart.
Standards are neglected for quick gains.
Now lives of future leaders are gone. What a pity!

Atiku should shut his useless mouth....the rot in the nation started from him and the old stupid Obasanjo.....then after he ocaastrated that one, he joined a group of northern and western criminals to hijack the government from a wick president and implanted a very calous and careless buhari, whom had one of the outstanding records of the most mediocre heads of state in the history of democracy arround the entire world.

Now you can see that because of one man's greed, it has lead to a whole lot of destruction to the nation he claims to love.....atiku should shut his mouth up.

Nigerians give building contracts to their friends and family members instead of qualified people.

You can't eat your cake and have it.

You want a cheap contractor, you go for quack whereas qualified and certified Engineers like me are all over the country ready to deliver.

I empathize with the affected families

GBAM!!!!!

You have hit the nail on the head. Nigerians want to eat their cake and still have it. Nigerians give building and construction contracts to family and friends instead of qualified people and still expect those buildings to be of standard integrity.

I have bachelors and masters degrees in Engineering with COREN registration but people who didn't even study anything engineering will be getting building contracts. What I see in the construction industry is appalling

My sympathies to the affected families.

The increase in cement price will rather increase the collapse.. quite bad

It's not compulsory u build if u dont money.

U should build what u can afford.

Mind you, the building is not a new building, it was built when cement was cheap

Very pathetic
They will tell they have built many buildings and they never collapsed as their own justification

Building collapse is getting too rampant nowadays.
From Lagos, to Abuja, to Jos
Government is to blame, cos necessary regulatory and monitoring agencies are busy manipulating the due process.
Yet innocent lives are been lost.
.and people are building substandard building and houses due to the high costs of cement and building materials...but that should not be an excuse for one to build substandard building and houses

Is this because citizens like you are happy to pay civil servants peasants relative to your politicians

Duke university is in my neighborhood, most Nigerians’ students there are children of civil servants.

Imagine a parent paying school fees of over $25k per semester.

I hope the aforementioned answers your question.

Why do you think that civil servants in America and other developed countries are less corrupt than in our country?

Because there are severe consequences for any aberrant behavior.

Their system is designed to trap any shady deal.

I believe that it also has to do with pay disparity between civil servants and politicians.

Did we have as much widespread corruption in our country in the period before the 1990s? Does Biden earn more than a professor, compared to Tinubu and a professor at a university here?

Payment disparity has nothing to do with stealing, it is endemic in the system we adopt.

Are you saying the civil servants in NNPC, CBN, NOA, NIMASA, EFCC, DMO etc are not earning above politicians?

Project owners should have sense.

Majority of non-corporate project owners are stupid and will choose cheap over quality almost every time.

I pity people who buy from developers without getting the building quality checked by a professional.
