"Each of the trucks of course is carrying about 1,200 25kg bags of rice," the minister said.

The federal government says it has donated about 20 trucks of rice to each of Nigeria’s 36 states and Abuja as part of measures to cushion the country’s food crisis.

Information Minister Mohammed Idris disclosed this in Abuja on Monday while briefing State House reporters at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting.

Each of the trucks of course is carrying about 1,200 25kg bags of rice,” Mr Idris said. “This is part of the measures that the government is taking in addition to so many others to ensure that the hardship being experienced by Nigerians is drastically ameliorated.”

The minister said the bags of rice are expected to be distributed to vulnerable Nigerians by the state governments.

…each of the state governments has received 20 trucks of rice for onward distribution to the most vulnerable. This is a first step and the federal government will continue to support all the state governors and local governments, all the subnationals, so that the hardship being experienced by most Nigerians in terms of shortage of food supply is breached,” he said.

Background
Nigerians have been grappling with a cost of living crisis since President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of subsidies on petrol last year.

The price of basic foods has tripled in some cases, with a 50-kg bag of rice rising from about N20,000 to over N60,000.

Monday’s announcement comes a few days after the government approved the duty-free importation of major food items like rice, beans, and wheat.

However, some Nigerians, including Akinwunmi Adesina of the African Development Bank, have criticised the food importation policy.

He warned that the policy could undermine all the hard work and private investments that have gone into Nigeria’s agriculture sector.

“Nigeria cannot rely on the importation of food to stabilise prices. Nigeria should be producing more food to stabilise food prices while creating jobs and reducing foreign exchange spending that will further help stabilise the Naira,” Mr Adesina said.

On Monday, Mr Idris said the move is a first step towards addressing food inflation in the country and that the federal government will continue to support all the state governors and local governments, to address the hardship experienced by most Nigerians in terms of the shortage of food supply.

“It is expected that the state governors will go ahead and distribute this food item to the most vulnerable. So that the hardship like I said has been experienced will be brought down significantly,” the Minister said.

He recalled that the Central Bank of Nigeria had earlier made available over 2.1 million bags of assorted fertiliser to the Ministry of Agriculture for onward distribution to the states.

“So that is also in progress,” he added, stating that the federal government will do everything they can to ensure that Nigerians have more food for consumption.

“Investments in the agricultural sector are ramped up and you also know that the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development that was announced by Mr President, will also take off very soon,” Mr Idris said.

They made it 25kg so it would appear that it's big

Let's use the normal size which is 50kg. The 1,200 bags of 25kg will be 600 bags of 50kg rice.

Modified: I forgot to add number of trucks
600 bags of 50kg times 20 = 12,000 bags
12,000 bags for 1 state, that's for 12,000 families.
12,000 families times 36 states (plus Abuja) = 444,000 families to benefit out hundreds of millions.

774 local government to share 444,000 bags of 50kg rice. Each LG to get 573 bags.

The size should be the least of Ur concern rather. U should be asking if it will get to you or average Nigerias who needs it?

Hmmm!

A quick estimation of what it will take Nigeria to be able to produce Rice and export to other West African nations

Here is my quick estimation of what it will take..... Let's assume we are 250 million. And I think we should provide a plate of rice for 250 million daily...but since I am looking into exportation, we should grow a plate of rice for 500 million people daily for 365 days.

From my research, presently, we get approx 2.5 tons of finished rice from a hectare. Hmmm..Of course, there is better yield, but let's just use this. A quick estimate is that we can get approx 16,666 plates of cooked rice from 1 hectare. So, we are going to need 30,002 hectares daily to feed our target. If we go with 90-day varieties, we will need 2.75 million hectares to be self sustainable and to export. Lol. That's roughly 27,500 sqm km of land.

It's funny that Nigeria has got around 920,074sqm km land area. Hmmmm! We need to find the total area we can irrigate...I don't have this figure....we need to look into different irrigation systems.

We need to do a better analysis than this quick one to get the real figure. It is not too hard to do. And we need artificial intelligence and data science to collate more data to help us. Then, we need to do the same for beans, soy, millet, sorghum, wheat, cassava, yam, corn, tomatoes, pepper, etc.

Of course, we may not calculate daily consumption of rice for the population...maybe three times a week...but naija dey consume rice oooo...some eat it daily...lol.

Then, we need to look at machineries that will get this job done. Also, calculate the human capital needed to fix this. Same we do for cattle and know the land area to cultivate grasses that will be sufficient.

But our government opted to import food. If we plan well, one year is enough to move Nigeria from "ebi npa wa" to abundance. Looters will NEVER allow this to work. What is wrong with us? That you are in a position to help many, and you choose to start looting. I don't get it. The money you cannot spend on yourself. You cannot even spend all on your family. So, why are you looting and moving money meant for the masses abroad so that thosenones can use it for what you refuse to use it for. We have a big problem

If no one has ever thought of doing this kind of estimation and going into it...then, we are in trouble. How can 29 trucks per state be sustainable? It's like FG is clueless. This minister of Agric is clueless. His principal, too, is not a genius, after all. The way we hyped Tinubu that he fixed Lagos. Mehn! It is obvious that he has lost many of his men who assisted him in doing some things in Lagos. He has lost people like Fasola, osinbajo, aregbesola, and many more. That's politics of bitterness for you.

Tinubu may likely fail the way I see it. The moment he could not answer questions in London during the presidential election and he delegated people to answer them... I knew we were in serious trouble. And it is already showing.

Also, Obi and Atiku have nothing to offer us. So, do not come here and start using my post to hype those two fake people. Obi, that was always quoting wrong figures.. and Atiku...the failure. Lol.

We are in serious trouble in Nigeria. The farmine that is coming....mehn! Una go collect. If you survive the farmine coming....thank your God. And I think the best way is that you go buy a minimum of a plot of land in a residential area. Fence it and build a small house there. 6 plots to 50 plots are better. Start by working on your soil. After 6 mths to 1 year, you should be able to start cultivating. You can grow enough cassva to make 2 bags of garri that will last you 1 year...200 tubers of yams, 5 tons of tomato and pepper....turn to paste and store....lots of vegetables.....poultry eggs and meat, rabbits...goat milk, cheese, etc.

Good luck to you all.
