An Asian man living in Switzerland was gifted a bowl of fufu and Egusi Soup by his neighbours, and after eating the meal, gave a rather interesting critique.

i went to pick up my toolbox from the upstairs neighbour and they wouldn’t let me leave without taking this box of food 😧 i’m so geeked lmao

update: I just tasted the soup? stew? it’s got fish bits in and it’s savoury, kinda bitter but not much that it’s unbalanced and it has a deep but mild heatiness. the texture kinda reminds me of stringy/scrambled egg curry? that white ball is actually a boiled egg btw 😭
I just had it for dinner so here’s an updated flavour description and review: There’s a very nice slight bitterness that I enjoy a lot, can anyone tell me what this is? I love bitter notes in food and my mouth is very sensitive to bitterness in a good way.

the sauce is savoury, rich and has a seedy/nutty flavour from the melon seeds

it’s more heaty than the first taste and the heat builds up, not a sharp burning full mouth high heat like in Thai food but a chest and belly heavy heat that slowly builds up.

The fufu pairs excellently with the umami sauce. if I were to describe fufu it would be that it’s super mild, neutral, smooth and elastic and it agrees very much with my palate. I found a new carb to love 😩

the fufu is very filling so I managed to only finish one of two ball given to me with 3/4 of the stew haha.

I enjoyed the dried fish bits, underneath there were some stuff that looked like honeycomb meat pieces, it’s rubbery and not something I usually eat?? I didn’t know how to eat it at first but ended up liking it eventually. the sauce also had small chunks of beef that were tender.

as an Asian I enjoyed the hard boiled egg. 😭 it added a nice mildness to the stew and acted as a creaming agent.

Very good meal.

Some reactions.

Nigerians were unanimous in their opinion that only Ghanaians are capable of adding boiled egg to Egusi soup. 🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️

Not surprising.

They have quite a wide range of cuisines and that would have influenced their palates.

Asian dishes have similar flavor profiles to African dishes.

When you’re a new migrant to an area with limited African food, Asian food will usually be the next best thing until you can find satisfactory African food.

So I’m not surprised he enjoyed it

It's just egusi, all this talk is unnecessary na, the time he dey carry talk plenty say he dey review I go just finish am while nodding like I'm listening and agreeing with him, Omo e don try wey I chop egusi, can't cook it, and I don't want to eat it in a buka due to hygiene concerns and I no know when I'll have time for another vacation again, because if no be hotel or vacation resort with their fancy restaurant I no dey eat egusi anywhere else, I no trust people to prepare it with utmost hygiene.

Yes o every Nigerian loves egwusi soup and Nigeria would have been the best country on earth if not for mediocre leadership occasioned by electoral frauds, tribalism, my turn, Emilokan, corrupt judiciary etc

When I think of Asian food, what pops in my head is lizards, bats, toads/frogs and other allied culinary horrors.
