Well, for starters I cannot see anywhere in my write up where the guy's or any other group's intelligence was called into question.

My only concern is, English being our language of instruction and official language, it is only proper and normal that someone with at least a secondary education should be able to express his or herself without having to sound like a dunce.

Until our national budget is passed in Hausa, your car manual in Yoruba or your next reply comes in Efik, we must all learn to speak English properly and communicate seamlessly with it.

Like I submitted earlier, the worst English speakers in Nigeria are the Notherners and to some extent, Yorubas. Mostly Kwarans.

Are you aware that the children of lots of wealthy northerners never schooled In Nigeria? The guy I mentioned did all his schooling in Egypt, only came back home during the holidays. We got to meet during his undergrad and like most I thought he was uneducated until I got to know him better.
I worked at a private school dominated by Muslims from Northern and western extraction. I'm talking about 99.9%. These kids couldn't string a correct sentence to save their lives. But most of them could read and write Arabic. One of the boys even taught me a little back then. Most of those kids spoke languages and I'd tell you it takes some level of intelligence and dedication to learn a new language. One thing I'll never do is judge a person's intelligence or level of education by his ability to speak English.

Accent is not much of a big deal when speaking English as long as you speak clearly. Everyone in Nigeria and indeed all over the world have some sort of accent

Coming from a well to do background should mean quality education and by extension a good command of the English language.

English as it were is not a prerequisite for intelligence but it is our shared and common language for instruction.

Any product made in Nigeria comes with an English manual. Not Yoruba, Hausa or Igbo.
So where is the comparison with China and India coming from

If the son of an elite northerner can command such bad use of English, I wonder how the child of a commoner would fare. It is a northern issue that should be addressed ASAP.

For those criticizing the boy’s english, always remember that some people have english as their third or fourth language. Most of us here speak english as a first language.

The boy likely speaks kanuri and hausa about 99.99% of the time. He also thinks in kanuri language. We think in english, that’s why our english flows freely when we speak.
