Kenyan President William Ruto on Friday mostly named holdovers from the cabinet he sacked last week to a new government meant to respond to the grievances of young protesters.

In a televised address, Ruto announced 11 appointments - six from the previous cabinet - with others to follow soon.

The mass firing last week was a concession to demands from youth-led protests that had already forced him to withdraw $2.7 billion in proposed tax hikes amid the biggest crisis of his two-year presidency.

The protests have resulted in more than 50 deaths since mid-June, and many demonstrators are now calling for Ruto to resign. Large protests took place again this week despite the president's concessions.

Ruto re-appointed the ministers of interior, defence, environment and lands and changed the portfolios of two other ministers.

The appointee to be education minister, Julius Migos Ogamba, was the running mate of the outgoing education minister, Ezekiel Machogu, when Machogu stood unsuccessfully for governor of Kisii County in 2022, local media reports showed.

Tbh, Ruto is a weak president

His mistakes about the protest was not to have engaged the social media influencers and explain details the reason why initiating the finance bill, the consequences of not passing it.

What he should have done earlier is what he is doing now.. Cart before the horse

I have friends in Kenya, the same financial bills their youths rejected, price of basic things gone up in the just concluded week.

The government would tell you they won't sign it but still implement it. What then is the purpose of the destructive protests in their country which sent the investors parking.

Like the president, like the citizens

What is there to explain about new taxes that will be a burden while the political leadership keeps enjoying freebies and proceeds of corruption?

Do you think Kenyan youths are like you that keep kissing the ass of their oppressors?

Then you are not aware of how protests were used to unseat presidents in south Korea and Brazil.

Is it your country they burnt down?

Did Kenyans complain of the burning down?

Did they not force the president to rescind his tax policy?

The Kenya current debt burden wasn't caused by Ruto's government but the past governments.

Ruto himself was reckless about government spending most especially that going to church every Sunday which is a waste of tax payers money. He also created unnecessary ministries when the country is struggling financially.

This certain protest have political undertones most especially from the Kikuyu's but no link with the VP Gachagu

Maybe u need to do your research better. How did it end in Brazil Egypt? What benefit did the "Arab spring" bring? Even America under trump, how did the protest end

The problem with protest is that it is too easily hijacked by people with personal agenda

Take government excesses aside? Currently, Kenya don't have good credit score to borrow money, how do you expect the government to offload the current debt without increasing the tax?
