Most people don’t know of CAATSA. It is short for Countering American Adversaries Through Sanctions Act. It is a US law that bans countries from buying weapons from US enemies, particularly Russia and China.

Any country that buys weapons from those two is instantly sanctioned.

Before the nonsense law, Nigeria bought Mil Mi-24/35 attack helicopters and Mi-18 transport/light-attack helicopters from Russia. We also bought most of our MRAPs from China, especially the Bigfoot MRAP. I remember we buy lots of weapons from Norinco in China too.

Because of CAATSA, Nigeria canceled contracts it had with Russia. Instead, we have had to purchase low-quality and outdated Huey from the US instead of the proven Mi-18 for our military transport needs.

Worse is that the Huey does not have the transport capacity of the Mi-18. The Huey cannot function as an attack helicopter too, even though the Russian Mi-18 can do it.

And for our attack helicopters, we have settled for some nonsense used Cobra helicopters from the US that is no match for the Russian Mi-24/35 attack helicopter.

The only good ones were the ATAK helicopters we got from Turkey, but they are smaller, and as usual, too expensive even though they are of lower quality than the Russian ones.

Funny enough, India still buys lots of weapon from Russia and even cooperates with them to manufacture some, and the US does not apply CAATSA to them.
