A Prognosis Of August Nationwide Protest Against Tinubu’s Bad Government by Bebigiby1: 6:02am On Jul 24
Throughout Jonathan’s term as president from 2010 to 29 May 2015, Tinubu enjoyed protesting, disparaging and instigating Nigerians against his government, this is why on the aftermath of the famous 2012 fuel subsidy removal, Tinubu made a frantic post on Twitter encouraging protesters to shut down the country, he said…

“Police. Do not attack protesters. Your children are involved. Your lives are involved. You children’s future lie here”

Tinubu and some other prominent politicians like Buhari eventually staged a nationwide protest against Jonathan’s government on fuel subsidy removal.

Again in 2014, pained by the government move to checkmate their anti-government propaganda during the campaign, Tinubu made another post on Twitter demonizing the government, he said….

“Rather than fight terrorists the govt targets opposition. D equipment procured to track & fight BH is now being deployed against oppositn”

Tinubu and his APC allies went on to sponsor several undemocratic campaigns against Jonathan’s government which eventually led to the defeat of the incumbent president in the famous 2015 presidential election. A betrayed Jonathan cried out at the heat of political attacks as if making a prophetic statement said….

“I am the most abused and insulted President in the world but when I leave office, you will all remember me for the total ‘freedom’ you enjoyed under me.”

Since becoming president in 2023, Tinubu has shown that he has no intentions of being a considerate, empathetic leader in a country filled with millions of Nigerians who have been told to endure the ‘tough decisions’ of his government. In barely five months of being in office, he showed how tone-deaf he is to the realities of a debt-ridden, broke Nigeria as well as the hardships millions of Nigerians endure daily as his leadership has so far failed to improve the quality of life for ordinary Nigerians, or at least stop making things worse.

Tinubu continues living and still aspires to live in absolute luxury, seeking to rub opulence in the face of Nigerians while they are asked to endure and sacrifice for the country. When he announced the removal of petrol subsidies, it was a blow to virtually all Nigerians as the subsidies were for many people, the only way they ‘felt an impact of government’. Tinubu claimed the fuel subsidy was a wasteful program that only benefited a few cabal, he promised (lied) Nigerians that the fund would be saved and deployed to other critical areas of the economy. Sadly, his actions and wasteful spending 1 year into office, makes it clear that people were wrong to have believed him. The long-suffering Nigerians who are battling all-time-high inflation, yet worsening purchasing power did not think these ‘savings’ would be converted to purchase of luxury vehicles for the president (himself), his wife, lawmakers and apparently, anyone in the corridors of power that feels like getting any obscenely expensive new toy.

Tinubu’s first budget that was submitted to the national assembly, a supplementary one nonetheless, showed that over N28 billion was allocated to furnishing his office, including the purchase of vehicles for his wife worth over N1.5 billion. Since the Nigerian constitution has no provision for the office of the first lady, the president effectively had lawmakers approve an illegal purchase of luxury vehicles for his wife.

Speaking of his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, a former Senator, while speaking at a church service in Abuja famously claimed that their family is so wealthy they didn’t need Nigeria’s money. Here is what she said below.

“Nigeria’s wealth is the commonwealth of all. It belongs to everyone. God has blessed my family. We don’t need the wealth of Nigeria to survive but to do the right thing. And I promise you on this altar, that with your help, with the help of God, we will set this nation on the right path.”

Remi Tinubu’s claim that the family is so wealthy and doesn’t need Nigeria’s money, is either audio money, as a Nigerian singer once coined, or the family is hopelessly stricken with greed. That Tinubu is insensitive and lacks empathy is already settled, but the greed and callous scrambling to impoverish the country through predatory borrowing and wasteful spending spree is wicked and shameful.

Tinubu’s family may not need Nigeria’s money to survive as Remi Tinubu claimed, but clearly, it needs all the perks and luxuries that Nigeria can offer, even if these come at great cost to the country’s struggling treasury. It is glaring that Tinubu, members of this government and the hangers-on leeching away at the commonwealth do not care.

It was the same Tinubu, whose entourage that attended the UN General Assembly in New York spent about over N400 million on hotels bills. The money was sourced by raiding an account meant for wheat grain levies. It was akin to raiding a child’s piggybank to satisfy the cravings of an addict parent.

While some of Tinubu’s supporters are bent on pushing tribal hateful propaganda and sowing seed of division among Nigerians, the last few months have been terrible for Nigerians as prices of food and services continue to rise. It is unfortunate that Tinubu is more concerned about living large and enjoying every privilege the presidency has to offer. Not a single care about making sacrifices to match the sufferings of the people he claimed elected him to serve. Believing that his government will change means being naive and ignorant of the systemic corruption going on within his government. As many Nigerians have decided to protest, Nigerians must be clear on their demands and be ready to push till it is actualized. I’ve always maintained that any protest that doesn’t demand for an end to this shameful evil APC government is a futile effort because even if you give Tinubu 50 years, Nigeria’s economy will still not get better, Tinubu and the greedy law makers cares only about their selfish agenda of excessive borrowing and luxurious spending, there is no point sugarcoating as it is simply a government of propaganda and lies, Nigeria’s economy will only get worse over the terrible policies and systemic looting by these politicians.

Finally, as the nationwide protest is set to commence on 1st of August, here is a list of demands that I think should be made by Nigerians based on order of importance….

- Remove Tinubu as president either through willful resignation or forced impeachment, followed by a total dissolution of the current government and a caretaker interim government setup with a mandate of 2 years to implement the points listed below.

- Stabilize the economy by implementing immediate reversal of fuel subsidy removal and floating of the Naira policies. Establish corrupt free fuel subsidy scheme, reverse sale of NNPC, sack current NNPC management and revive one national refinery (Port Harcourt refinery) within 5 months period.

- Pay Nigerian workers a minimum wage that reflects economic realities to boost Nigerians purchasing power and revitalize the economy.

- Overhaul the 1999 constitution or replace it with a people-backed constitution through a sovereign national conference followed by a national referendum

- Restructure Nigeria political landscape to accommodate Nigeria’s diversity, resource control, decentralization of constitutional powers and regional development

- Scrap the senate arm of the Nigerian legislative system and make legislative job a part-time endeavor

- Invest heavily in education and give Nigerian students grants, not loans. Pursue aggressively free and compulsory education for children across Nigeria

- Release Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally and demilitarize the south east. Release unconditionally all Endsars and human rights activists political detainees

- Sack all current military and security officials benefiting from widespread insecurity and terrorism across Nigeria

- Sack all current heads of the anti-graft agencies, empower the anti-graft agencies to investigate and prosecute corrupt judges that have denied and continue to deny Nigerians access to justice

- Probe past and present Nigerian leaders over looting that they supervised while in power, recover their loots and deposit it in special account to be used to fund education, healthcare and infrastructure

- Sack current INEC chairman, reconstitute the Nigerian electoral body INEC to remove corrupt individuals and partisan backed operatives appointed to manipulate elections. Establish diaspora voting rights for Nigerians outside the country

Once the electoral reforms and all other reforms listed above are done by the interim government within 2 years, a free and fair election should be conducted to usher in a new Nigeria founded on the basis of justice, equity and fairness.

Nigerians must protest for the right reasons and this is what I believe we should protest and agitate for. This is what must be done now to salvage the country and put it on the path of greatness. One thing that we must all learn from Tinubu’s government and APC as a party is that propaganda doesn’t benefit anyone, it may hold sway for sometime but eventually the people will see it for what it is, a simple lie told to keep the people subdued and docile while they plunder the nation’s treasury. The price for a bag of rice is edging towards N100,000, I hope many Nigerians have eventually seen through the deceptions of this government and are ready to end the propaganda once and for all….

Protest ke?

The same people that can't even agree on what to protest about? Tinubu is on the right track; they should rather focus on supporting the government to improve the situation instead of causing unnecessary chaos. Let's give him a chance to deliver!

Start it from your village.

Tinubu's subsidy protest was restricted to his own region.

Do same by staging the protest from your region

Tinubu's government is still finding its feet. Protests won't change the resolve of a leader determined to steer Nigeria forward. Let’s channel that energy into productive dialogue instead of empty noise.

What right track? Are the citizens not supposed to be the ones who should tell if Tinubu is on the right track or not? Why are they grumbling and grinning all over.
If you as a person believe there would be improvement in this Tinubu Government, you are joking, no sign of progress whatsoever

No propaganda can stop what is coming…. It is either you’re ignorant of past events or you’re a paid government agent saddled with the task of derailing threads on Nairaland….

I guess for you, Tinubu is on the right track of destroying the country and you’re one of those that will benefit from it’s demise…. Shame on you…. Sometimes I wonder if some of the people commenting on this website are not living in Nigeria and seeing what Nigerians are going through….. this Nairaland platform has so many selfish tribalistic people as members it’s disturbing….

I see through your Ibo supremacist/IPOB/Obidients agenda....the sum of the subterfuge is~

1. Free Nnamdi kanu from where he is shackled and tethered like a Christmas ram in the DSS underground gulag.

2. Sack the INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu because you perceive wrongly and deludedly that a man who came third in a presidential election actually won that election.

That pretty much sums up the reason why Ibos are surreptitiously the proponents of the proposed August 1st protests.....

The protests are just noise from those who can’t handle progress. Tinubu is focused on rebuilding Nigeria, and the naysayers can’t see the bigger picture. Let’s give the man a chance to implement his plans before jumping to conclusions.

You Ibos are just pathetic. You can't decide whether the last presidential election was rigged by Tinubu or whether Tinubu won because his Yoruba people decided to vote for him because he is their brother.

However one thing is certain a person who came third in an election can NEVER be the winner!
