MTN shuts down offices nationwide over SIM blocking outrage

Telecoms giant, MTN, has shut all its stores and service centres across Nigeria.

This was coming on the heels of an outrage by some of its subscribers across the country after the network provider barred their lines on Sunday.

In a viral video on social media Monday, a mob is seen destroying a barricade fence just outside the MTN office.

The clip showed a large crowd of angry subscribers vandalising the telecommunications company’s office in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State in response to the network blocking subscribers due to a mismatch in their National Identification Number and SIM registration.

However, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a response to the circulated video on X.com stated that the DPO of FESTAC and his men had successfully restored normalcy and peace at the scene.

“This should not be the way to go!

Reacting on Tuesday, MTN said it would be shutting its shops nationwide today.

“Yello customer, please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July 2024,” the statement sighted on X read.

MTN knew that they could have been the first to receive the transfer aggression from Nigerians.

They're lucky.

NCC should be blamed for the outrage. They're the ones that ordered TELCOS to bar numbers without thinking about the consequences.
I hope MTN offices open soon because people still need to visit their offices.

Blame NCC for giving people warning upon warnings.

Not people who acted like barbarians and went to damage property

I wonder why Nigerians can't just act rightly. Always violent always trying to fight and break things

The offices should remain locked, you don't go to people's place of work and threaten them when they have told you to register months ago

Thank God I did mine the same Sunday I noticed that my SIM was blocked. I don't know why banks and telcos still ask for our fingerprints and NIN whereas the NIN database already has that information.

This can only happen in a failed country.

Millions of Nigerians have suffered because of this sim . In a sane country, telecommunications company will give a proper notification before blocking sim nationwide.

Anyways it’s not new, Nigerian government is known for inflicting hardship and suffering on her masses.

Anything to make masses go through suffering and pain is their mandate.

The government can see how the citizens are suffering , but they careless. No be today Nigerians don Dey suffer they are used to suffering

people who have linked their lines to their NIN was also barred. Infact they constituted the majority of the protesters.
Well the anger made people to damage properties. You cannot blame them.

Mtn made a big mistake. During the time when Nigerians are angry and hungry, frustrated with valueless Naira, you added salt to our injury. That's a fatal error! Although I believe Mtn has been used as a scapegoat. The biggest culprit is NIMC! This organization spends the last eight years scamming Nigerians in the name of NIN. I have not seen the benefits of this enrollment exercise. The exercise has made NIMC and their agents rich overnight, yet crime rate is on the increase.

Just hear talk

Anger made you damage properties belonging to someone else..it is the same anger that makes most politicians treat Nigerians like thrash....those who said most citizens are not different from the government are truly correct....both citizens and government are the problem of this country

U don't block subscribers lines without prior notification on the reason so they can take possible action to prevent such disconnection if valid, which can be very costly to them and their businesses.

Mtn was completely irresponsible.
