Giving updates is normal for dev. I agree.
My point is if he's not convenient with the option to drop 10K , then he should not act as if he forced him to credit him ... The thing is once beaten is twice shy , some client can make you go all the way at the end they will tell you the job is no longer available. So who caters for all the expenses and time wasted ! Don't fool yourself Bro...face the truth and accept it. If someone wasted your time and you have nothing to show for it you will understand garri no be shawarma

Your thoughts are all over the place and are leaving me confused. Which one be "Don't fool yourself..."? Or haven't you have to competitively bid for jobs against others equally as good as yourself? If you are good at what you do you will regularly lock down jobs. Someone recently reached out to me for what I consider a quick job. I had previously worked for him and gone over and above delivering requested product as well as providing profuse documentation for them to manage the system without me. He cam this time around and my rates had doubled. I had even started work on verbal agreement when he suddenly came and told me his "partner" had given the same job to someone else. I was slightly hurt but moved on. Last Monday he came back that they are having issues and wanted me to have a look. I charged him 5x my initial rate for the first job I did for him and he paid it ahead before I lifted a finger. Unless you are working for an employer, you will be disappointed by prospective client. It's the nature of business.

What does he want to do with 10k data.
The dev said he can do it (he doesn't have to prove this), why not enter a contract with him and pay when he's done

He doesn't have to prove this? A dev says to you they can do something and you don't interrogate their claims before getting into a contract? Really? 😂😂

Well, I gave him the money because I thought he might just be having rough time.

I get that....I'm just saying it was a red flag for me. And should now be a red flag for you. Think of a dev as a business. Would you "fund" a business so they can pitch their service to you? If they are any good, their finance should also be good

You looking it at different angle, his previous work, portfolio, test can prove his capabilities, not by starting the work.
what do you think will happen if he'd fix the issue before any contract agreement.
The question is why did he pay for data without any agreement yet. Maybe he got caught up in a game of two

Most of the devs claiming they can do the work often have no body of evidence, they are either selling script or thinking its something simple that can be done, until they convince and skip. It's why anyone shouldn't hire anyone without a body of evidence and milestone payment.

Yes, but there is another problem - the end user has no way of verifying competence or capability.

Good afternoon sir, trust you're doing good?

From the chats, the 10k is not for the job in fact they've not come to negotiate price... The guy requested for 10k to sub his router so he can join OP on zoom to discuss thier deal

That is the first sign that he is not a professional. Will he also ask for money for generator, for software license, etal?

This is what I am saying.
A potential client asks for a meeting. Am I going to demand transport fare to the venue?

The irony is you can buy 15gb of data for 2k. 20gb for 5k, 2gb for n800.

The guy ran op street. 10k for my router when you can sub data on your phone for a 1 hour meeting. I have been in meetings where my network fked up and I immediately loaded data on my phone

OP loose guard big time. You asked very salient questions in your earliest response. So no gen and OP would buy gen for the "dev"? Maybe even buy a new Macbook cos "dev" needs the latest one to be able to deliver the work.

This is essentially a freelance gig. You come to work with all your tools and bill the client for your time and any licenses required. No way I am providing a prospective freelancer data to join a meeting where we discuss my requirements. If you cannot join at your own cost, that already makes my screening easier

Honestly it is better to get references from people you know.

Nigerians are way too dubious for you to be engaging unknown strangers on Nairaland.

You need extreme paranoia.

I am an engineer and I can easily take someone else's work and present it as my own. How will you check? I have an old acolleague, reasonably competent, but ethically challenged. Everyone who used his services had serious fight. Some to the point of saying they would get him arrested. Last week someone wanted to engage him for a project and u warned the person. I told him to go and ask different ex colleagues who had worked with him.

Okay. So what would you say about companies that give out laptops and accessories to employees. Some provide accommodation and lunch as perks.

Some artisans would charge you for transport to buy materials to fix your house. In Nigeria, some medical practitioners would ask you to buy syringe and gloves.

The devs that you are referring to would normally not take this kind of clients.

So, the clients have no other choice than to go with upcoming devs. No biggie here. Everyone was upcoming at one point.

I think it's just business gone wrong, it could happen to anyone or in another field.

You said it yourself, they give out laptops to EMPLOYEES. That's a completely different ball game. Before you become an employee, all the background checks has been done and you have been vetted. Not so for a freelancer.

If I went to a hospital were they asked me to buy syringe and gloves, it's the last time I'm stepping foot there. They should source it and bill me in my total bill. Same with the artisans. And I'm almost certain you don't grab random artisans on the road, give them transport and ask them to go buy parts.

A freelancer is expected to provide all their tools, and bill the client for their time using those tools and any other things they have to buy. Get the customer to purchase whatever it is they need when they start the job, not customer sending freelancer money for the freelancer to buy the tools.

I understand where you are coming from regarding upcoming devs. But no matter how up coming, you got to be in this from a strong position. Or at least not from an "abeg help me buy data" or "abeg help me buy script"

And when you say "this type of clients", nothing about the chat suggest that OP is "this type of clients". I'm assuming you used that to refer to "cheap clients". Someone who can drop 10k for data just for zoom meeting doesn't come across as cheap to me. Ordinary 3k will get one 11gb of data on airtel. I don't know, but 11gb of data on Zoom meeting means we dey do super high level video streaming stuff.

Back then when I was looking for someone to create a telegram bot + web app for me the same guy charged 800K which was not bad for the job.
My only requirement was that the payment is after everything because it’s an online stuff, not face to face developer stuff.
That same guy, he said the must be part payment first.

I really trusted him, his portfolio looks very great, but the person in charge of the payment didn’t want any form of part payment before completion… That’s the only thing that stopped me.

I’m really surprised seeing this thread

The guy who eventually solved the problem charged me about $50. So imagine the first dev denied himself 50 bucks just cos of ordinary 10k.
It was a shocking and very unprofessional behaviour. The funny thing was that he kept reading my whatsapp messages without reply. He only blocked me after I made this Nairaland post. I am sure he must have seen the post.

That's the way it goes when you have a poverty mentality. You need to put the guys name and Nairaland Id in the topic and first post as an aid to others so they don't make the same mistake. You can also name the person who you eventually used if you are satisfied with his performance. In the end it is about references

This case is small.
How about you hire someone (remotely of course) and they practically do nothing useful for the first 2 months as they are learning/onboarding only for the real work to begin and they exit?
3 months of Salary gone. Project stalled! You are back to hiring again. This happened to me 3 times last year.

This is common with the young lads who have only 8 months of experience but appear to be experts on X giving their grandfathers tips on how to be a great software engineer.

My NL hires have been fantastic.
One moved on to UBA HQ, and another to the US for MS.c, another to a much bigger firm and others are doing quite well.

From the chat; I wouldn't hire that guy.

Not excusing the scammer, but I think most Nigerian devs, take the money out of desperation and later realize the issue is more than what they thought it was, so they initially delay because the motivation to do the jobs, usually gets gone.

It's why I tend to pay Nigerian developer a good sum. I've paid 150k for someone to convert Figma to HTML, because i value my time.

Also another issue is most NL dev will say they can do the job just for the money, so there's another angle too.

A year ago, someone contacted me, stating that he wants me to build an inventory management system for him, that will manage his business and employees, I told him I'm going to charge him 200k for the job to be done. This guy have the guts to price me 80k I told him I'm not doing, long story cut short, I brought the price to 150k last. Baba said he'll be paying 100k, I told him, my last price is 150k , that I won't take anything less. He said he can't pay such amount, then I told him I can't work with his budget either. So we went our separate ways.
What I'm I trying to say here is, discuss price first, if it doesn't favour you walk out of the job but if it favours u collect 60% of the initial price. Before starting the job. Simple. Don't get money from people when u know it won't see of the project.

In this case, even if the guy was not willing to take the job, he could have just simply inform the client instead of collecting money and ghosting.
