Abuja High Court Restricts Protest Venue In Abuja, Cites Public Safety Concerns by Highnesscfr2030(m): 8:17pm On Jul 31, 2024
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja has restricted the organizers of a planned protest from holding their event at Eagle Square, Abuja, and instead directed them to use the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja. The protest, scheduled for tomorrow, had been initially planned for Eagle Square, but the court's ruling has forced the organizers to change venues.

The court's decision was made in response to an application filed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), which expressed concerns about the potential for violence and disruption at Eagle Square. The FCTA argued that the venue was too sensitive and could pose a risk to public safety.

After considering the application, the High Court ruled that the protest could still go ahead, but only at the Moshood Abiola Stadium. The court held that the stadium was a more suitable venue for the protest, given its larger capacity and more secure environment.

The organizers of the protest have reluctantly accepted the court's ruling and have announced that they will comply with the directive. They expressed disappointment at the change of venue, but emphasized their commitment to peaceful protest and their determination to make their voices heard.

The protest, which is expected to draw thousands of participants, aims to bring attention to a range of issues affecting the country, including economic hardship, insecurity, and corruption. The organizers have promised a peaceful and orderly event, and have assured the authorities that they will cooperate fully to ensure public safety.

The restriction on the protest venue has sparked mixed reactions, with some welcoming the court's decision as a necessary measure to ensure public safety, while others have criticized it as an attempt to stifle free speech and assembly. However, the organizers' decision to comply with the ruling has helped to ease tensions, and the protest is expected to go ahead without major incident.

I like the venue. Eagles square is too close to Aso Rock and Federal Secretariat. Go to the big stadium and enjoy yourself. It’s big enough for everybody. Una fit play ball, do concert, do side knacking and even sleep. Just stay inside the stadium and don’t disturb the rest of us grin grin grin

Clutching at straws. It's like saying "Court declares protest illegal. Orders protesters to stay at home and pray for the govt instead" grin.

Oga you obviously need education how the judiciary works

This is rubbish meant only at psychologically discouraging people

This protest tomorrow is happening because APC don't even know how to act on protest

If they had simply ignored it and allowed it .. Trust me it would have died down

You guys make a mess of everything

There would be protest on the streets of Lagos and Abuja tomorrow and there is absolutely nothing anyone can do to stop it

If you guys attempt to force those protesters it would make it grow far more the next day

This President, all the 36 Governors, and the entire system that has supported their blatant disregard for the rights of the people, need to be removed from office if Nigeria is to move in the right direction abeg! This is too much! undecided

Look at how those in London were able to go straight to their consulate to protest. But here in Nigeria, look at how the Nigerian government uses the courts to treat Nigerians lower than second-class citizens in their own country. Imagine the insult? And worse, they can only get away with these acts in the South. Dem fit try am for North? undecided

Xo after all the Jagaban is a Nomenclature,

Why all these palpable fear over a mere peaceful protest?

Why are northern states courts not giving same restriction order?

Next time if Tinubu do anyhow na to shake am again with threat of protest and him go behave since he has nothing absolutely to offer other than palliatives, taxation and corruption

This protest is just a child's play grin

The protest that will change this country will just erupt one day without notice and everybody will take it personal, the political thieves won't even know something is coming to consume them, they'll have no time to think, but run kitikiti or hide for their lives.

Today, you'll see the clown governor Sanwo olu and Makinde come out, grab mic, smile at the protesters and say 'Yes, protest, I'm also protesting with you' grin

That protest that will change Nigeria for good will erupt suddenly, and the corrupt politicians will run out of the country through bushes, creeks and tunnels grin

until then, make we dey play dey go grin

Lol. They are just trying to control the chaos before it even starts. Abuja don’t need another round of protest madness.

These so-called protesters always come out with no clear agenda, just looking for trouble.

It's good the court is taking steps to protect the peace. Public safety should always come first. Let them stay home and form a WhatsApp group instead.

If we no protest today, tomorrow your pikin go still protest, the problem with y'all supporting tinibu is he may and you may not stay in power forever. That thing you kicked against one day you may still need it. Don't always support things because you are gaining from the system, power is transient

Theres a permanent army unit at the city gate close to the stadium
So security is guaranteed.
The rights of protesters is not absolute anywhere ...., it can be denied if it infringes on the right of others or if the government deem it a security threat.
In UK a court just jailed protesters
US has been jailing pro Palestinian protesters since Oct 7
