Protests: IGP Orders Officers To ‘deal Decisively’ With Arsonists, Troublemakers by Kuginzi: 4:00am On Aug 01
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed his men across the country to “deal decisively” with arsonists and troublemakers as youths stage #EndBadGovernance protests against hunger and economic hardship across the Federation starting on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

In a statement he personally signed on the eve of the nationwide protests, the police boss said the organisers of the planned demonstrations failed to furnish the police with the details of the protests including the names of intending participants, routes of rallies, among others.

The IGP said “the name given to the movement — ‘Take It Back Movement’ has far-reaching undemocratic, unconstitutional and illegal connotations”.

He said intelligence revealed that the protests are aimed at unleashing mayhem on the polity and innocent citizens.

Egbetokun said the police won’t fold their arms and watch a degeneration of the situation into a “state of anomy”.

He put all police formations across the country on alert to protect innocent lives and properties from attack and destruction.

“All officers and men of the Nigeria Police are hereby directed to act and deal decisively with any act of arson, intimidation or harassment of any citizen, threat to lives and properties, breach of peace and any act of criminality that may arise or flow from the planned protest in any part of the country.

“Perpetrators of any crime will be arersted and promptly prosecuted,”
he said.

The planned protests against economic hardship, which is gaining traction on social media, have been scheduled to be held across all states of the Federation as well as the nation’s capital Abuja in August.

Prices of food and basic commodities have gone through the roof in the last months, as Nigerians battle one of the country’s worst inflation rates and economic crises sparked by the government’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of forex windows.

The police, military and the Department of State Services had warned against Kenya-styled protests. Politicians, who surmised that the planned rallies might end up like the EndSARS demonstrations of October 2020, have continued to appeal to youths to shelve the planned rallies but the young people remain unfazed, doggedly insisting that the protests will hold.

Yes agreed totally

Some people full of hate are hell bent on seeing Lagos and SW burn but they will be disappointed. We learnt our lessons during EndSars when their boss who is now in custody was dishing out instructions to burn and kill and even displace our traditional rulers.

If not for them EndSars protest would have been a success but they hijacked it. This time they will fail.

I knew this man was up to no good. See, as he continues to insinuate that the protestors are criminals? undecided

Where are the rights Lawyers abeg? Make them make sure police have evidence for every arrest made ooo! Na so dem go carry people go kill again like they did during the EndSars. These trigger-happy policemen need to be checked abeg! Some of them are probably serial killers walking around in uniform looking for an excuse to kill another Nigerian. undecided

If na Nigeria, IGP go just dey talk plenty without any real action.

This one wey dem call "decisive" na just empty words to calm the masses. When the protests start, na dem go come bring out their full arsenal, but when it’s time to address the real issues, dem dey hide like rats.

E be like say we don dey enter another season of empty threats. The real troublemakers dey enjoy their time while the police dey focus on innocent people wey just wan express their frustration. Na so we go dey run in circles, no real change, just more talk and less action.

Make I no even start on how dem go treat any genuine protester like criminal. Na so dem dey stifle free speech while pretending to protect the citizens. This na just a show of force, and we sabi say nothing go change if the leaders no fit address the root of the problem.

Well, if we are not careful, we won’t have a country again. Imagine the buffon called Asari a few days ago crying not been able to see Tinubu. They probably gave the haneemal small corn he started waggling his tail again threatening and suppressing the rights of his people to peaceful association and assembly.

We don't expect otherwise.

Support and protect peaceful protesters but fish out and deal with criminals hiding in their midst.

You become a looter, an arsonist or a thief under the guise of protest....Arrest them and deal with them ruthlessly

The IGP knows what time it is. These troublemakers are just looking for a chance to cause chaos and destruction. Instead of seeking genuine change, they want to create more problems for innocent Nigerians. It's high time the authorities put their foot down and deal with these arsonists decisively. Enough of the nonsense!

The original plan of the government is coming out

"Promise protesters security, sponsor their own Louts to infiltrate the protesters, issue a warning and then go after the original protestes

Why are we even talking about protests when the real issue is the lack of accountability? The IGP can order all he wants, but how many times have we seen officers turning a blind eye while the real criminals walk free? It's just another show of force without addressing the root cause of the unrest. If they truly want to 'deal decisively,' let them start with the corrupt officials that have caused all this chaos in the first place. Until then, it’s just noise.
