I said it here that these ladies will pull shock wins at the Olympics. This is the first of them. All the naysayers on this thread can see what belief and faith in a team can produce. Cheers. Congrats, Dtigress and Coach Wakama. 3 Likes |

The French women beat Canada 75-54. This result means that France now top the table, on points difference, with Nigeria 2nd, Australia 3rd, and Canada 4th. |

PDPGuy: Prior to the tournament, I always thought Canada was our best chance at a win, watching their game against France help solidify that yet the more. I also think if we play great defence like we did today we could beat France too. 2 Likes |

Congrats to this resilient team. They brought it on and refused to surrender that lead. 3/4 quarters won against a powerhouse is the thrill. I didn't see that Liz Cambage sef, with loud mouth. What she's currently doing is even more pitiful. These ladies wore 🐯🐯 spirit and gave the perfect revenge after that fiasco. Murjanatu Promise Ezinne These 3 in particular are something else. I didn't add Amy cos i just personally believe she's still loading.😂 If she comes full battery... Oh my!! There were too many 2pointer misses today. We ought to be 100+ but I'll take this upset so well. We deserve the win and shout out to Rena Wakama 🇳🇬💯 3 Likes

lovewins:I believe we can beat Canada too. Hey, I would take 5 points from the group any day, especially when you consider that, a week ago, almost no one believed this team would garner more than 3 points from the group |

ReubenE:First of all, She's an Okrikan lady, there's nothing wrong if I celebrate my town woman. Most people here don't know Okrika or where it is located so it's very necessary if I mention it here. I don't know why you are making a big deal out of my comment, other tribes do it here everyday. And nothing concern me concern ijaw, Okrika and Okrikans have gain nothing from ijaw.🤷🚶🚶 |

No matter how you slice or dice it, D’Tigress would avoid the U.S. in the quarter finals, per the Olympic format

lovewins: Anyone with connection to the team, please help us beg promise to stop shooting the ball especially beyond the arch. She's literally the worst shooter on the team and the data shows that. Vs Australia yesterday she was 2-12 At the Olympics qualification tournament she went: 1-8 Vs Belgium 2-12 Vs USA 3-14 Vs Senegal In the last 4 games she's played she's gone 8-46 in FGA. It means she's shooting 17% from the field. Those are terrible numbers. She is a hell of a defender and a good ball facilitator. She should focus primarily on running plays and defending. Let her leave the shooting to others. And it at all she should shoot, she should drive to the paint and attempt it. That way she's likely to get fouled and get to the free throw line which she's good at. 4 Likes |

Against France, all eyes will be on Ezinne Kalu and Amy Okonkwo. The French defence and attack will focus on the two of them. This is when Rena should introduce a dark Knight to the game- Someone who is a good shooter who is relatively unknown in the team- someone like Adebola Adeyeye or Blessing Ejiofor to do the damage. Coach Rena has to coax the " Dark Knight " to shoot 3 pointers and two pointers at any opportunities she has. Someone like Elizabeth Balogun must rise up to the occasion that day. Our defence has to be very tight against France on Thursday. We are literally playing against the whole of France on Thursday. Go, D'tigress. 2 Likes |

Redman44: While I totally understand what you're trying to say, your suggestion isn't going to work except by some miracle. Blessing and Adebola are 0% career 3 points shooters. They fair better on 2 point shooting, but it's difficult to see how that translates seeing the both averaged less than 4 shots per game. If I would suggest a dark night I'll go with Tomi Taiwo since she can shoot beyond the arch. Elizabeth Balogun like you suggested is also a safe bet. Pallas also has to make some shots, finally Promise has to shoot less. 4 Likes |

lovewins: It is literally going to be WAR on Thursday against France. How many minutes did Adebola Adeyeye and Blessing Ejiofor spend on the court against Australia? We need at least 2 unknown players to rise up to the occasion on Thursday. I believe Coach Rena will be weighing up her options at the moment. I forgot about Tomi Taiwo completely. Yes, she can be the dark Knight, however she has to be quicker on her feet to launch 3 pointers. Tomi has to be faster in shooting on Thursday. As for Elizabeth Balogun, she is a dangerous player on her good days. She should be great on Thursday. |
Re: Nigeria Basketball Thread - Onward To The Afrobasket by lovewins: 8:36pm On Jul 30 |
Redman44: Funny thing is I think we'll fair better offensively. My concern is if we are about to put up the same defensive masterclass we did against Australia. Many people don't know how good the Australian defence is. Ezi Magbegor and Alana Smith are both top 5 in blocks (ranked 2 and 4). They are also both top 20 in rebounds. Bridget Carlton is one of the leaders in 3pts in the league too. How we were about to compete despite all of these is actually very impressive. France isn't as good defensively as Australia, at least on paper. We just need to take care of the basketball and put up great defence cause their offense is great. Marine Johannes is one heck of a shooter, watch out for her. 2 Likes |

PDPGuy:...yeah, inexperience...What your view of the game 2mw...Glad we finally have a real point guard in the team...noticed,Okoro did not step on the floor at all,or did she? Also I noticed the Coach played it like march madness, the rotation was just about 7-8 players of you noticed. |
Re: Nigeria Basketball Thread - Onward To The Afrobasket by PDPGuy: 9:49pm On Jul 31 |
carbonado:I think Wakama may opt for a zone defense within the first few mins of the first quarter, especially after seeing that Australia had their best offensive spell, in the first quarter, against D’Tigress. As the French are offensively better the Aussies, it would be wise not to play loose defense in the first 5-6 minutes. I also think Tomi would get some minutes; but her effectiveness is up in the air. If the French shackle her like the U.S. did during Olympic qualifiers, then I wouldn’t expect her to drain many threes |

Can Nigeria beat france ? The odd is 10. Is it worth the risk ? I don't know much about Basketball please. Is France better than the Australians we beat ? |
Re: Nigeria Basketball Thread - Onward To The Afrobasket by carbonado(m): 7:11am On Aug 01 |
PDPGuy:...I have not seen France play, however,I do not think playing zone is good against most European team, because they mostly are good shooting teams. I do not know if the likes of Marine Johannes or Gabby Williams is on this present squad,if they are,we better not play zone. I think we would play the same way,we played the Australians.. Occassional full court press, traps as soon the other team approaches the the half court,a lot of pressure on the ball leading to deflections and wayward passes by the opposing team...I hope we keep the same tempo from last game.Note, France will be out for revenge as we beated them the last time we met. 1 Like |

carbonado: Gabby and Marine are are part of the squad. I agree, we should play the same way we did Australia. No point pivoting from what's working. As long as we stand on business defensively and clean up our offence I think we can win today's game. Also, Promise Amukamara should not shoot the ball. I'll rather she drive into the paint and get us those free throws. |
Re: Nigeria Basketball Thread - Onward To The Afrobasket by lovewins: 7:23am On Aug 01 |
PDPGuy: I think I s about setting up your players for Success. Tomi has to set her feet to shoot for her to be effective. We saw that clearly at the Afrobasket. Question is how do we achieve this? Set up plays exactly the same way the Japanese does. You have their guard who drives into the paint and gets a lot of defensive attention which is automatically leaves a shooter open. Doing this should work for Tomi. 1 Like |
