Yes it is delusional. Delusion can be good sometimes, it's only bad when you begin to ignore reality. My expectations going into this competition was that we were going to come out of the group and medal. Even after we lost the first 2 games, I still expected us to beat Japan by at least 2 goals. It however doesn't mean that I can't be pragmatic when doing a postmortem on why things didn't pan out well.

Before this competition began or before we kicked a ball, I've always said we have a personnel problem. We were also always the least favourite to leave the group. We also had shoddy preparation. Only those detached from reality won't. acknowledge this.

The examples you cited even helps make my point. First you identified athletes who participate in individual sports. That's totally different from team sports. Also, all of these athletes save Tobi are yet to win anything at the world stage. Even Tobi is yet to medal at the Olympics. Her first significant medal was the World Championship and she's been struggling lately to get back to that form. Mind you, they achieved all of this because they can easily leverage on coaches and facilitate available to them in the US. Again it's individual sports.

Our basketball team are African champions and are yet to achieve anything at the World stage. Why do you think our win against Australia trended? It's because no one, not even the players expected us to win. That's our first win in 20 years. We almost always lose to teams at the world stage, again giving credence to my point.

Only 12 teams are participating in the tourney with most of the teams being best in the world. You are more likely to land in a difficult group than you aren't.

Some journalists are now suggesting that Ofili’s name was removed from the list of 100m runners at the last minute because AFN officials needed her fresh for (potentially) the two 4x100m relay races, and the 200m. They believe that she has brighter prospects of winning a medal in the 200m than in 100m discipline.

So, in essence, what the AFN and NOC are saying is that Ofili doesn’t have the stamina to run in 10 races (4 rounds, each, in the 100m and 200m, and 2 rounds in the 4x100m discipline)

Following the conclusion of the Matildas’ Olympic campaign, Head Coach Tony Gustavsson's four-year contract with Football Australia has also come to an end by mutual agreement. Gustavsson addressed the players and staff following the final group stage match against the United States to farewell them and wish them every success with their futures.
