At least six people have been reportedly killed while some sustained injuries in the ongoing protest in Suleja, Niger State. The victims were said to have killed while security operatives were struggling to dislodge a group of protesters who mounted barricade on a section of Abuja-Kaduna highway. Daily Trust had reported how passengers and motorists were trapped on the road for hours. Some policemen who were around the barricade could not control the youths who outnumbered them. However, a reinforcement team was sent to the scene where pandemonium occurred. Among those killed was said to be Yahaya Nda Isah, a resident of Hassan Dalatu Road, Suleja, who was hit by a stray bullet. The bullet reportedly hit Isa on his bike in front of the Suleja Police ‘A’ division where protesters had assembled. A nephew of the deceased told Daily Trust that his uncle was on his bike when the bullet fired to disperse the protesters hit him on his chest and he died on the spot. “He was my uncle. He was not even protesting. He was passing in front of the Police ‘A’ division where some people were protesting when stray Bullet hit him on his chest and he died. As I speak with you, I am in his house alongside other mourners. It’s unfortunate”, he said. Another victim was simply identified as Mallam Abu also said died on the spot. One of the residents who did not want his name mentioned told Daily Trust that 3 other people were shot at the same scene while 2 others were shot at the Suleja Junction on Abuja-Kaduna road but could not confirm if other victims were dead. Another resident who said his shop was not far from the Suleja Police “A” division said he had to close to run for his life. “We heard people shouting and gunshots were heard for about 20 minutes at Emir Roundabout. The situation in Suleja is ugly”, Bala Abdullahi, another resident. Spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said some hoodlums also attempted to set the Tafa LGA ablaze but they were dispersed by security operatives. “The miscreants attempted to set the Tafa LGA ablaze, they were dispersed by the Police and military. Kaduna road and toll gate was cleared”, he said. When contacted over the phone, Wasiu Abiodun, Police Public Relations Officer in Niger, said, “Let me verify and get back to you.” However, he had not sent his response as of the time of filing this report. https://dailytrust.com/beraking-protesters-shot-dead-in-niger-state/ |

I am an ardent supporter of protests in a democratic setting.I will never support anywhere belle face protests that is currently going on in our country.Blocking of roads during protest in any part of the world is illegal and criminal. You can achieve so much with protests without blocking of roads. I wanted to lend my support for the protest in Benin city here, until I saw the organizers demands on Monday.I support protests to force the president to do more concerning the current economic hardship.I don't support ridiculous demands. We should be mobilizing to ask the president and govt to come clean concerning our refineries and crude oil production which is the cause of 80% of economic hardship.A vice president lodge that was over 80% completed before this govt came into office and got it completed, what has that got to do with the unbearable price of food in the market? The president and his team can be forced to change so many things they are not currently doing well,if the strategy we use is right.Forexample we don't need 10 days of protest,I-3 days should be okay at the first instance, and when the govt refuse to hear us we can resume. With the way this protest is going,i pray another anarchy dont happen in this nation. 1 Like |

Shoot the looters and thugs. Shoot those trying to cause anarchy by blocking roads and blocking the rights of other Nigerians to enjoy public infrastructures. GEJ did same with occupy Nigeria, and Buhari with IPOB protesters 4 Likes

Government have gone on overdrive using propagada, lies and scare tactics to cancel, douse the moral, and intimidate Nigerians against their lawful right to protest. It's even worse on Nairaland as pro-govt paid-agents infiltrated any thread to amplify such thread and peddle various trope against protest, often times ridiculing us and the suffering of Nigerians. It's a shame and I believe it should fuel our anger to protest the more. The mildest of govt tactics is to hypnotise and reinforce into the psyche of Nigerians that protest equals violence and death just to discourage us . But historically govt is usually the cause of all violent protests in Nigeria. . The truth of the matter is, protest by its nature can not always be curtailed or predicted. What determines if a protest will be peaceful is the anger or the gravity of issues that fueled the protest in the first place especially if government is willfully oppressing and causing suffering. That's why in saner climes ,u don't worsen issue by shooting angry peaceful protesters...and now tell them to be peaceful So, fuelling most violent protest is govts callousness to shoot at protesters. If police shoots at protesters, then there's no more rule of engagement or civility. That becomes a free for all as primal emotion against injustice will take over Violent protest is bottled up anger against insensitivity or callousness of govt as well as perceived injustice, oppression and resistance of govt.....in such scenario, u cant tell a protester how he expresses that anger. . If protest has to be violent especially by destroying govt property, so be it, if it will get the needed attention. It took govt institutions to be burnt down in Kenya before their govt took them serious. So Nigerians shouldn't play into govt book that protest should be cordoned off in a venue , that it shouldn't involve blocking of roads, or vandalizing govt property. This is the rule of protest everywhere in the world when people protest against suffering and oppression. Otherwise govt will never take us serious. . The efficacy of protest is unfortunately directly dependent on how much it cripples the economy and how much collateral damage a govt fears it will lose on its institutions and property..... otherwise...na rally una dey do o..... 2 Likes |
