Not an MTN defender. But with all due respect, the 15billion you talk about was not stolen from government or nigerians. It was money made in the course of their legitimate business and they needed to repatriate same in order to pay dividends to their shareholders.

Companies doing business in other countries are usually allowed to freely repatriate profits. Not just Nigeria.

Bad governance and corruption in Nigeria has made it difficult for foreign companies to repatriate profits.
It is the same reason Nigeria had issues with UAE and some other countries, and also the same reason some other companies had to leave.
Thats why the current government is making serious efforts to ensure that enough $ is made available for foreign companies to repatriate profits.

No serious company will come to Nigeria to invest if they cannot return their profits.

Believe it or not, and with all due respect to nigerian telecoms companies, if MTN leaves Nigeria, there will be serious problem.

Go and read Airtel recent report, especially the explanatory notes, they specifically mentioned the negative impact their Nigerian arm had on their profit for the period.
Oga nothing will happen if they leave.Imfact nigeria will be better. They should leave as soon as possible. I don't really use thr network. I only use them to receive calls for long because it is my first line people know me with.I use airtel for data which is very ok and far cheaper

Just catching fun with you ooo, our esteemed Madam.

Haa, Oga mi, me I don't know o. 😀
What I know is that OANDO has prospects and may not obey any law as far as NGX, Oil Sector, positive news and/or expectations of positive financials are concerned.
Everything depends on Mr. Market, Mr. Time, the Coy and investors sentiments........na dem dey lead and we dey follow....lol.

If NB, Interbrew and Guinness did not obey any gravitational law, I don't know why OANDO should.....(Well, maybe except for bad news sha)
Na my opinion o, e fit wrong or right. 😀

I hope we even still remember that some pwople picked this OANDO at very high prices, and not all have sold till date. It's going to be a kind of relieve to such as it doesn't wipe off their capital like few others did.

MTNN is one of the cankerworms, akin to the biblical molt eating worms, a caterpillar worm 🐛 🪱 🐛 that sucks Nigeria's Forex dry.
The rooted problem has existed since its inception, as the then-government failed to enact sufficient legislation to checkmate these Forex-sucking company.
MTNN is indeed unavoidable and undesirable. It single-handedly brought Nigeria to its knees by siphoning $14 billion out of the economy.
Following the paltry regulatory fine of $1.5 billion, which they paid without admitting guilt, I always knew they would get back at the government.
I wonder why the Nigerian government didn't seize the opportunity to nationalise MTNN.
The story of the MTNN scandal, perpetrated with Nigerian collaborators, made me realise that some Nigerians hate Nigeria with passion. The same was true for the P&ID scandal.
MTNN role in Nigeria's current inflation cannot be understated.
MTNN is full of global financial scandal.

The day the magnificent 7 stocks saw red, before the bear was slaughtered by the ravaging bull, is etched in my memory. I won't soon forget July 29th to 31st, 2024. Bad news from Wall Street dominated the headlines, with analysts focusing on Tech and AI stocks. Microsoft beat estimates in all key areas but was punished for its less-than-encouraging cloud revenue. Alphabet performed excellently in all fundamentals, but Wall Street found fault in YouTube's advert revenue, which marginally fell short of estimates. This led to a massive sell-off. I sensed a conspiracy and quickly transferred funds from UBA to my T212 investment account. Luckily, the funds arrived during after-market trading on July 30th, when NVIDIA was trading at $100. As a Nigerian investor actively learning the ropes of stock investing, I saw this as a lifetime opportunity. I added 100 units of NVIDIA to my portfolio at $100/unit. Today, I woke up to a gain of over $2000, with NVIDIA trading at $120+. My red portfolio had turned green overnight. The lesson here is that true wealth is built during market downturns. Always keep cash in your portfolio to prepare for red days. Red days are imminent in equity investment, and volatility is the market's inherent characteristic. I learned a valuable lesson from seasoned portfolio managers and investment bankers: they create opportunities where none exist. They force you to sell when you should be buying and vice versa. Remain calm; red days are opportunities for learned investors to borrow money to invest in fundamentally sound stocks like the magnificent 7. Up magnificent 7 stocks, the story is beautiful.

This is essentially a stock split masquerading as a bonus issue. Bonus issues do not impact the stock price. The exchange should use a less confusing term to avoid misleading investors. There is a distinct difference between a stock split and a bonus issue. The recent action by UCAP, changing 1unit at N31 to 3 units at N11 each, is technically not a bonus but rather a stock split.

Not really.
In a stock split, the share capital of the company remains the same (nominal value per share changes, say from 50k per share to 25k per share) while in a bonus issue, the share capital increases by the value of the bonus issued (nominal value per share remains same).

After its bonus shares are allocated I believe UCAP will be traders' gold mine due to its significantly increased liquidity.
Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by Mankind2024: 2:46pm On Aug 01
I must correct your misconception. As a long-time ordinary shareholder of MTNN, having held shares since its listing by introduction, I added 10,000 units to my existing 12,000 units today. I exercise my right to express opinions on listed companies, as it's my investment. I never dissuaded anyone from buying MTNN. Instead, I have been vocal in criticizing underperforming listed companies through strongly worded letters.
Femi Otedola also criticized his folks in the banking industry, on extravagant use of investors funds to acquire private Jets. This doesn't mean he would not invest in those banks.

Oh, ye defenders of MTNN, you forgot to mention the truth - that MTNN is now being run on depositor loans taken from Nigerian banks despite the huge revenue figures. Where were you when MTNN siphoned $15 billion from the Nigerian economy? Nigeria did not collapse. Nothing will happen; no one is indispensable. MTNN remains a forex guzzler. I have never seen a company that loves our forex reserves like your beloved MTNN.
Long stories change nothing. I accept the truth that MTNN is undesirable yet unavoidable.

MTN has a business model of taking profit out of Nigeria in $$$'s from the naira it generates from users in Nigeria.
MTN must have repatriated the original dollars it invested in multiples. But because it's a foreign concern that generates no dollars as it exports nothing out of the country to generate dollars, MTN as it is today, is not good for the economy. As it will need the dollars businesses who have export streams that generate dollars. Most of Nigeria's dollars come from crude oil sales. MTN will always be in need of sucking this dollars away. To solve this problem, MTN needs to start a subsidiary that can generate dollars from Nigeria's comparative advantage. Perhaps it should invest in Cocoa or Palm Oil (like PRESCO) for export. Without something like this MTN, will continue to put pressure on the relative little $$$'s Nigerian companies generate.

Bro I am not defending MTN. You are dispersing incorrect information regarding the company and I am simply correcting them. Is running on depositor loans taken from Nigerian banks a bad thing? I would argue it is the opposite instead because they pay interests on those loans, which means generation of income for the banks, depositors and tax collectors. That the Nigerian banks choose not to distribute the income to the real owners of the money is not MTN's fault. Out of all the banks I have account with, only FirstBank pays me interest on my savings account. The rest just use my money and then pocket the interest. Besides, if you understand how telecommunication's operational environment, you would know that no individual or group of individuals can provide the kind of cash they need to run the business, hence their reliance on loans.

As for the 54Billion dollars, I don't know where you got the figure. Are they repatriated over period? How long is the period? Is if for dividends or payment of liabilities or both?

Nigeria will collapse if MTN collapses because 80% of businesses, homes, government parastatals, telecom providers and over 70Million individuals depend on MTN infrastructure for their daily operation. Who will absorb such number and with what infrastructure?

But only a profit making company can repatriate or export $. Mtn has not made profit since this govt took over so they cannot export $. It shouldn't therefore be said that they are not good for the economy.

Who said MTN services is not good for the economy or needed by the Nigerian Economy. Don't mix business model of long term sucking $$$'s away from Nigeria with valuable Telecoms business service delivered.

Unbalance is the key issue I am raising. It needs a counter balance by injecting money in a $$$ generating subsidiary like Cocoa, Palm oil (like PRESCO) or whatever Nigeria can export to generate $$$ stream for their foreign shareholders.

To purchase their shares at today's price you will need over N3Trillion Naira. They will also likely sell it at a premium. You will also need roughly about N2Trillion to start running it. How much is Nigeria's budget again?
