Lazy yuuts. Even farming, they want the govt to do it for them. Govt only encourages and supports farming, not govt itself going into farming. 3 Likes 1 Share |

AlexBells: I understand your point now... You're saying that governments are composed of individuals who are products of the same society they govern, and as such, they often reflect the same flaws and biases as the society. This can lead to a perpetuation of problems and a lack of effective solutions. Governments are indeed made up of individuals who are shaped by their social and cultural context. However, it's also important to recognize that governments can play a crucial role in shaping society and addressing its problems. To break this cycle, it's essential to promote critical thinking, education, and civic engagement among citizens. Government has a major role to play in all this! |

Even in communities where farming is the norm, there have been abundant cases of herdsmen killing farmers and cattle to destroying crops. Insecurity is a great demotivator for agriculture, especially in the villages. 1 Like |

Richtaiwo:Do you know if government gave them lands, fertillizers and seed? Let government allocate 1 acre each for families that want to grow crops for home. Let them Provide tractors and planters and seedlings. You will see what will happen in 6 months. |
Re: Please What's Really Difficult For Government To Go Farm. by DeLaRue: 8:28pm On Aug 02 |
Hoelujohn: Outside of Abuja, Federal government doesn't own any land. It is States that own land within their territory. States should be the one taking farming initiatives. How many State governors ate doing that, particularly in the South. Yet, everyone leaves the Governors, and blame the Federal government. |
Re: Please What's Really Difficult For Government To Go Farm. by Richtaiwo: 8:48pm On Aug 02 |
Hoelujohn:In Nigeria today, all lands belong to govt. But that is just on paper. In practice, land holders are individuals, so I don't know where the concept of giving lands come from. Fertiliser and other farm inputs? So you are not aware govt does subsidise fertilisers every farming season? If you can't access it, hold your leaders at local levels responsible. Tractor? I'm sure if you go to your local govt hqtrs, you will see one or two rusty and rickety tractors parked somewhere. They were given by govt but funds for their maintenance are getting diverted by the local leaders. |

NorthernAgender:even you OP you have a backward mentality. The government should invest in mechanized farming which will encourage establishment of food processing factories that will employ youths rather than sending able bodied men to farms. World don advance pass that one. |
Re: Please What's Really Difficult For Government To Go Farm. by Obiedun(m): 10:55pm On Aug 02 |
NorthernAgender:That is where the problem is. If we can have a cooperative farm where a large number of people will come together, acquire land, rent machinery and jointly do the farming I think it will be better |

AlexBells: 👍 see your point... and you're right that society often shapes government policies. Especially in democratic systems. The example of gay rights in the USA versus Nigeria is a good illustration of this. However, also note that governments can influence societal attitudes and norms through legislation, education, and public policy. In the case of gay rights, governments in countries like the USA and Canada have played a significant role in promoting acceptance and equality through laws and policies. Nigeria have perpetuated discrimination and stigma through discriminatory laws. It's s true that governments can't impose policies that are drastically out of step with societal values. But they can play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and promoting social change. A balanced approach that takes into account both societal attitudes and government leadership is necessary for creating lasting progress and eventual development! 1 Like |

Government is ideally not suited for direct agricultural production. 1. Corruption - Nigeria is a very corrupt country which attendant inefficiency and diversion of resources. It translates into inflated and increased costs of production. 2. Bureacracy - Farming is time bound and averse to government bureacracy or red tape. For farming to be sustainable, you need to do the right things at the right time. 3. Politics - Nigeria leaders have always used agricultural goods such as fertilizer etc to favour their political supporters who may end up selling the items instead of putting it to productive use. 4. Policy - Government have not been able to formulate and implement comprehensive that adequately address the constraints of farmers. Mostly wasteful empowerment programs done for political patronage. However, government can venture into farming indirectly by creatingenabling environment and supporting PPP, and farmers cooperatives and individuals. 1. PPP - Partner with companies or organizations with proven capacity in farming. Especially, mechanized agriculture to boost yield and enable profit. 2. Research - Government has to adequately fund research to address farming constraints. 3. Agric Extension - To bring useful research findings to farmers, agric extension needs to be properly funded. 4. Policies - Government has to formulate and implement sound economic policies to enable sustainable production and food security. If countries like Israel with arid desert land can be producing enough for it's population and even export, I don't see why Nigeria cannot. It boils down to leadership and utilization of resources.
