How do I service my Toyota Camry 2005 gear oil?? by inikamoze(m): 1:22pm On Aug 05
I have a 2005 Toyota Camry 4plugs I bought fresh toks in 2022 from a Nigerian dealer.
I want to know when the gear oil is due for changing or servicing. My mechanic checked it and said it was due, the oil kind of smelled burnt and it was becoming black, before this Camry, I had driven a Corolla for over three years and I never changed gear oil or had gear problems before I sold it because of theft scare.

Now I want to know:

If it is due for servicing, how many liters will I need for the servicing?

Is Hardex gear oil good for Toyota vehicles?

Do I need to buy an oil filter?

I have heard stories of people changing gear oil and the gear developing issues later on, how true is this? coz to change gear this period no be joke ooo...Experts in the house please I need your advise.

Thank you.

Which oil did you previously use? Use the same oil.

Things you will likely face is slippering gear.

Just remove 2 quart.

But if you are scare. Remove 1 quart and Drive it for 1 months and ensure you do 200 miles. Remove another 1 quart again and Drive it for another one month and ensure you do 200 miles. Drive it for another 1 month and change 1 quart. That's 3 quart.

It will refresh the gear oil and give it a new life by not tempering with it that much.

That was how I did mine. For my own I remove 2 quart because I really didn't know the oil that use inside. At first I noticed slippering sometimes when i newly add 2 quart by removing 2 quart. but don't panic it's because the gear oil haven't mixed properly.

When I noticed this slippering sometimes. I took it to express road to fired it. It was than normalized after the oil mixed together.

Once in a while I experience slippery it took 3 days before it finally stop.

I have never serviced the gear since I bought it 2 years ago, so I can't tell which oil is inside, I guess its the one that came with the car.

When you say one quart, you lost me there, our measurement in Nigeria is by Litre. When you say remove, do you mean remove from the engine or from the gallon? Mind you the Hardex I want to buy is 5ltrs.

Whatever you do, do not, I repeat do not add the oil while the gear is hot. Ensure it is cold before you add the oil.

1 litre. Find 1 litre gallon and funnel. Look for a mechanic you can give instructions because some of them have strong head. The one I instructed was arguing with me that I need to flush it but I told him to do as I instructed. If not it would have been serious problem.

Just buy 2 litre gear oil.

Tell him to drain one litre from the gear using funnel and 1litre measurements container and It's not a must it be accurately that one litre. It's will pass because some will still and not accurate. That why I said buy 2 litre.

Then top it to guage and drive it. If you notice slippery it means the gear would have had serious problem assuming you flushed it. Just use it for some time for it to mixed properly together and it would stop and getting better as time goes. And you might notice shorting keep topping until it stabilised.

Really? .. that's one of the dumbest advice I've ever heard ... and I'm no mechanic nor know much about cars. Reason this ... let's say you have a 4 litre bottle of dirty water. You pour out one liter and pour in one liter of pure water.... shake the bottle very well.... pour out another litre and pour in a litre of pure water....repeat same until you pour in all 4 liters of pure water. My question to you .... do you now have 4 liters of pure water in the bottle? Same with the transmission fluid ... each time you drain you will be draining out the good you just poured in with the bad. Why not replace all at once?

Transmission fluid is not usually on one's Toyota check list .... unless you begin to have transmission problems. You don't... but I can see you're looking for one. If you have to change the fluid I will advise you Google what fluid to use for your particular model car and get it .

what you don't understand it's better you ask questions.

Who said change the whole fluid is not better? But in this case he doesn't know the history of that car. Not the oil use inside.

Google is your friend.

Google slippage after transmission fluid change. So you haven't seen testimonials of people who transmission pack up after fluid change. This system is that the transmission is not having issue. Of there is issue you can just changed the fluid. But in this case is just to give the fluid a refreshing live not. I did mine a years plus now. And will do the same this year ending or next year. It's better to be on a safe side than to form awoke.
