For athletics, that is a great number. Do you know the amount of students fighting for US athletics/study scholarship from around the world?

Of course, I do agree! A better pathway should be created. That is where we need an effective local government. That would make the process easier!

Making of Champions do have competitions and athletics/schooling pathway. You can check them out!

Are you talking about athletics alone?

I am talking about sports industry generally not only athletics.

Nevertheless, what they are getting is just 0.01% of the talent available.

My son can run 100m but I no wan make em go because he prefers football.

However, if it's made compulsory in secondary schools and he eventually participates in a state competition, peradventure he can be scouted. I am not saying he's the best but I am saying if there's a process, perhaps it should be more than 1,000 which is too small for a country with 250m population.

Not saying you are wrong but I will say government needs to play part in it. How?

1. Provision of facilities from primary to university
2. Initiate competitions for primary and secondary schools from local government, state and federal level. Including university.
3. Give incentives to prospectus winners. Such as scholarship and full sponsorship for competitions abroad.
4. Develop leagues for various sports and get it sponsored by private sectors.
Etc.
5. Employe former gold medalist as national coaches. For example, our wrestling improved because of Daniel Igali.

As at now, all these are dead like dodo. We use to have them before but politicians are fiction on oil money because they don't understand Sports can used to create employment and wealth.

God bless you bro.
Let me add Inter-varsity Olympics. I don't know if such has been organized in Nigeria yet but I believe such program will actually produce talents across the country.

There are a lot of things government can still do to make sure we have a strong participation in the global competition.

lol! Do you know the number of our Athletes on scholarship in the United States? Maybe before but in the last 5 years we have sent close to 1000 athletse to various Universities in the United states. You guys are too dis-informed on this platform. Ajayi just left this January.

Many could not meet the Olympic standard but they would by 2028.
Just be patient! 2028 will shock you!
Wow.. that's a welcome development. Over 1000?

Like we have myriad of these programs. The reason there's little to show for it is because government runs it. I don't know why it's difficult for folks to understand these.

Our athletes go to the US and join the NCAA, run solely by technocrats and run like a business. The NCAA is not a US government run inter-versity organization. Samuel Ogazi that just qualified for the 400m finals after 38 years or so is still in the NCAA.

What do they need one for?

wink you are smart. Nice retort. But this goes further to strengthen the argument of how little St Lucia's govt with a population of 170k is willing to support it's most prized athlete. Perharps if Nigeria was as small as st Lucia we can give our athletes such support. Or if we had the giant status of USA we can use our funds for that.

However I noticed south Africa only has one gold medal in this Olympics, isn't that odd. With how much they spend on sports one would have expected them to have 3 gold by now.

Dude, government policies determines if the private sector will thrive or not. This is very basic

Stop arguing with that abroad based guy

When he can't win arguments, he resorts to insults

For someone that ought to be exposed, he acts like a gutter person
