Gas pipeline debuts in Eko Atlantic City

By Sebastine Obasi
August 7, 2024

A 5km natural gas pipeline network has debuted in Victoria Island, connecting Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, courtesy of Axxela Limited and NGML.

This milestone marks a significant achievement in Axxela and NGML’s ongoing 72.5km pipeline infrastructure project, which will span from Victoria Island to the Lekki metropolis. The newly commissioned 5km pipeline network traversing from Outer Marina to Kuramo Beach is the first phase of the project and is expected to connect customers from Five Cowrie River by Army Officers’ Mess in Bonny Camp, all the way to the proposed Lekki International Airport.

According to Kehinde Alabi, Axxela’s Chief Operating Officer, “The commissioning of the first phase of this ambitious 72.5km pipeline network underscores our commitment to expanding natural gas infrastructure within the Greater Lagos Area. By connecting Eko Atlantic City to first gas, as a pioneer customer on this axis, we are paving the way for more access to the natural gas advantage; providing reliable energy solutions that can aid economic development. For us at Axxela, we are not only fueling businesses, but we are enabling the development of self-sustaining clusters, whilst strengthening Nigeria’s socio-economic growth”.

Also speaking, Justin Ezeala, Managing Director, NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML), “Over the past two decades, NGML and Axxela have been renowned for their pioneering efforts and immense contribution to natural gas advocacy, this expansion project is a further reaffirmation of our partnership and dedication to natural gas infrastructure development across Nigeria and Africa. We are optimistic that advancing the natural gas pipeline network to the highly commercial Victoria Island and the rapidly developing Lekki area is a step in the right direction”.

Managing Director of Eko Atlantic City, David Frame, highlighted the significance of being the first customer to be connected and benefit from the project. “This development not only ensures a more efficient, stable, affordable and reliable supply of energy for our power generation needs but also sets a good benchmark for modern urban living. Beyond the immense socio-economic benefit, the sustainable nature of natural gas aligns with our vision of creating a future-ready city that prioritises energy efficiency and environmental sustainability”.

“The collaboration between Axxela, NGML and Eko Atlantic City will help the urban coastal city meet its energy needs efficiently and reliably. Eko Atlantic city is currently developing a 60MW capacity gas powered plant infrastructure which is expected to be commissioned in the coming years. As this futuristic city expands, its power requirements are substantial and critical for both residential and commercial activities. Axxela, a market leader in natural gas processing, distribution and power development, brings extensive experience of delivering piped gas to about 200 industrial and commercial customers via a vast natural gas infrastructure network.”

Eko Atlantic City, also known as Nigeria’s International Commercial Centre, is an innovative coastal city located in the heart of Victoria Island. With its grand infrastructural design that houses world class, large scale financial, residential and commercial developments, the city has become an undeniable hub of economic opportunities. This new city development embodies self-sufficiency and sustainability with cutting-edge urban planning, power generation, advanced engineering and technology.

Upon completion, the project will deepen domestic gas utilisation as companies, and businesses along the Victoria Island-Lekki corridor will have access to pipeline network infrastructure and natural gas will be readily available for utilisation across various market segments including cooling, feedstock for industries and decentralised power solutions amongst others.

Lagos is benefiting from strong structures led by colonial masters and FG for donkey years as former capital of Nigeria however the governors of Lagos state have tried in maintaining the tempo of development.

Record holds it that Lagos is the most developed state in the world at the moment. Elon musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff bezoz and many others world billionaires in dollars, are all relocating the headquarter of their products to Lagos state. Who made this possible? Tinubu. Please let's give the man his flowers.

This is a good development. This project must not fail so that other states in Nigeria can copy the model and replicate it in their states.

However, I personally think the properties in Eko Atlantic are overpriced in a third-world economy. Hence, companies aren't rushing to acquire lands and start developing their edifices. Those who cannot afford it hail the beautiful project while those who can afford it think it's overpriced.

Many Igbos will rather die than go back to the East, countless thread where Northerners chased they away like swines have been surfacing all morning on Nairaland.

Today, Yorubas are the ones chasing them, South Africans are still chasing the wanna be with fake birth cert, make we no talk about thier experience for Ghana. Even normal clime in the UK don de pursue black while they have no place to return.

The protest against bad government is really paining you but you have no option than to keep executing the planned protest handed over to you.

Anti-protest a.k.a Bad Government Must Continue was also planned and handed over to your people to cause problems.

Well, I have seen countless of where Yoruba are being chased away from the North by Core Northernes.

When Air peace decided to help bring stranded Nigerians back home from South Africa because Buhari refused to act.

Fact: Yoruba were the majority of the returnees from South Africa through Air peace. Ogun State top the list. But you think Igbo were the victims.

You're a hypocrite who want One Nigeria but don't believe in One Nigeria. No indigenous lagosian have governed Lagos, their political leaders are always from other states. You didn't build Lagos, Nigeria did. Most of you will rather die than leave Lagos back to Ogun or Osun. How do you see it?

This mess is happening because Nigeria practices unitary system of government and that system is coming to an end because it won't enter the new Age.

As the world is being restructured, Nigeria will be forced to do the same or get destroyed. We can't enter a Multipolar World with a unitary system of government because Nigeria has been polarised, the Western and Eastern powers will turn Nigeria to battle field because none can afford to lose Nigeria to the other groups.

Tinubu and his boys slowed Lagos growth. The resources are massive but 90percent goes to private pockets.

Tinubu's Lagos is now the hottest cake for would - be foreign investors. The effect of having a visionary leader like Tinubu. When Tinubu was going round the world to canvas for investments the Obidogs we're castigating him. Good to see that Lagos is the first benefactor of all these new investments.

This is true. In mitigation though, Eko Atlantic was created as a high end and world class property development niche offering. Pricing has to reflect this.

Yes Nigeria is not a developed nation but that should not mean we cannot host developments targeted at the richest individuals and businesses both local and global.
