This is true. In mitigation though, Eko Atlantic was created as a high end and world class property development niche offering. Pricing has to reflect this.

Yes Nigeria is not a developed nation but that should not mean we cannot host developments targeted at the richest individuals and businesses both local and global.

3-bedroom flat in one building in Eko Atlantic sells for nearly #800 million. People would rather use that money to buy a much bigger house in a highbrow estate in Lekki.

And that money can still buy you 3 semi-detached 4-bedroom duplexes around VGC and Eleganza axes.

I agree 100%. Most Nigerians will act as you say and go for more available options. Yet a development pitched as one of the most iconic on the African continent will still get patronage from a niche market however exclusive or small.

The fact that they’ve been able to maintain the tempo of development is what stands them out. No other State in Nigeria maintain the continuation of Governance being maintained in Lagos. Sadly and unfortunately for you, the Yorubas don’t discriminate among themselves. There’s nothing like Osun, Ogun or Lagos Yorubas. Yorubas are Yorubas and are ever welcome to join in active politics. That’s why you can easily see a Yoruba man from Ogun state holding a political office in Ondo and Lagos without anyone raising an issue. Same can’t be replicated in your enclaves of cavemen. Shockingly it's cheaper to buy properties in Dubai...than some parts of Lagos. One can make the argument that the expensive parts of Dubai is still more expensive than Eko Atlantic but Eko Atlantic is no where near what the expensive parts of Dubai look like, so why is it overpriced?,Also, in Dubai, you will find properties with monthly payments spread over 5yrs not tied to a bank...yes in Lagos you will hear...pay in full after 12 months. In US, you can pay your house for 30yrs. We make everything so difficult in Nigeria and wonder why we ain't progressing. My submission is...the Elites make it so, so the benefits won't be available to middle and even the relatively upper class Nigerians. They want it all...Elites amongst eachother...and that is not how you grow or develop a nation, but that's one thing they really don't care about. Let's see where PBAT credit scheme takes us. Builders can spread payments like they do in Dubai without banks or collateral...you take possession after paying in full. Case closed

SmartPolician:
This is a good development. This project must not fail so that other states in Nigeria can copy the model and replicate it in their states.

However, I personally think the properties in Eko Atlantic are overpriced in a third-world economy. Hence, companies aren't rushing to acquire lands and start developing their edifices. Those who cannot afford it hail the beautiful project while those who can afford it think it's overpriced.

Gas pipeline debuts in Eko Atlantic City

By Sebastine Obasi
August 7, 2024

A 5km natural gas pipeline network has debuted in Victoria Island, connecting Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, courtesy of Axxela Limited and NGML.

This milestone marks a significant achievement in Axxela and NGML’s ongoing 72.5km pipeline infrastructure project, which will span from Victoria Island to the Lekki metropolis. The newly commissioned 5km pipeline network traversing from Outer Marina to Kuramo Beach is the first phase of the project and is expected to connect customers from Five Cowrie River by Army Officers’ Mess in Bonny Camp, all the way to the proposed Lekki International Airport.

According to Kehinde Alabi, Axxela’s Chief Operating Officer, “The commissioning of the first phase of this ambitious 72.5km pipeline network underscores our commitment to expanding natural gas infrastructure within the Greater Lagos Area. By connecting Eko Atlantic City to first gas, as a pioneer customer on this axis, we are paving the way for more access to the natural gas advantage; providing reliable energy solutions that can aid economic development. For us at Axxela, we are not only fueling businesses, but we are enabling the development of self-sustaining clusters, whilst strengthening Nigeria’s socio-economic growth”.

Also speaking, Justin Ezeala, Managing Director, NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML), “Over the past two decades, NGML and Axxela have been renowned for their pioneering efforts and immense contribution to natural gas advocacy, this expansion project is a further reaffirmation of our partnership and dedication to natural gas infrastructure development across Nigeria and Africa. We are optimistic that advancing the natural gas pipeline network to the highly commercial Victoria Island and the rapidly developing Lekki area is a step in the right direction”.

Managing Director of Eko Atlantic City, David Frame, highlighted the significance of being the first customer to be connected and benefit from the project. “This development not only ensures a more efficient, stable, affordable and reliable supply of energy for our power generation needs but also sets a good benchmark for modern urban living. Beyond the immense socio-economic benefit, the sustainable nature of natural gas aligns with our vision of creating a future-ready city that prioritises energy efficiency and environmental sustainability”.

“The collaboration between Axxela, NGML and Eko Atlantic City will help the urban coastal city meet its energy needs efficiently and reliably. Eko Atlantic city is currently developing a 60MW capacity gas powered plant infrastructure which is expected to be commissioned in the coming years. As this futuristic city expands, its power requirements are substantial and critical for both residential and commercial activities. Axxela, a market leader in natural gas processing, distribution and power development, brings extensive experience of delivering piped gas to about 200 industrial and commercial customers via a vast natural gas infrastructure network.”

Eko Atlantic City, also known as Nigeria’s International Commercial Centre, is an innovative coastal city located in the heart of Victoria Island. With its grand infrastructural design that houses world class, large scale financial, residential and commercial developments, the city has become an undeniable hub of economic opportunities. This new city development embodies self-sufficiency and sustainability with cutting-edge urban planning, power generation, advanced engineering and technology.

Upon completion, the project will deepen domestic gas utilisation as companies, and businesses along the Victoria Island-Lekki corridor will have access to pipeline network infrastructure and natural gas will be readily available for utilisation across various market segments including cooling, feedstock for industries and decentralised power solutions amongst others.

This is truly impressive.

It'll take Lagos State one notch higher as an international business hub. The gas would feed the greenfield industries and other users within those areas of Greater Lagos.

I have to step this very moment because what you posted is CLEARLY FALSE! A lot of you Ibos keep recycling these same FALSEHOODS online and offline that the natural gas Lagos State uses is from Imo or elsewhere in the South East Iboland, but this is INCORRECT. I have to address this topic today so that the disinformation from the propaganda and secessionist Websites young and impressionable Ibos get these deliberately FABRICATED stories from will stop! I've been a member of Nairaland since 2005 and I know you well from back in the day to be a rational guy but in the last 2 years, I noticed a penchant for you to make flippant allegations laced with some form of hate or sarcasm. I must state here and now that indeed Imo State (which is where you are from being that you are an Aguta indigene) has large UNTAPPED gas reserves and It's impressive that Imo State gas would feed industries and CNG cars down the road, but this disinformation that natural gas is piped from Imo or other areas in Iboland to sustain Lagos is highly irresponsible and disrespectful to the people of Itsekiriland (who are ancestrally blood relatives of the larger Yoruba people who are indigenous to Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Togo). Just to emphasize again, the Itsekiris are a Yoruboid group that is largely made up of Ijebu, Ilaje, and Ife (Ufe) ancestries with some Bini-Edo exiled immigration in 1480 through Prince Ginuwa [who was eldest son of Oba Olua, the 14th Oba of Benin (1473–1480 CE) and Heir Apparent to the throne of the Benin Kingdom] and 70 of his lieutenants who were sons of 70 noble men and settled in an Ijebu community called Ode Itsekiri, Omadina is another Itsekiri community led by Chief Lenuwa whose folks spread out originally from Ijebu Waterside area now in Ogun State several centuries ago. The Ijaws of Delta State too have oil and gas reserves and are not making these kinds of spurious and fabricated claims on Nairaland or on other social media platforms!

Read the FACTS Below About the Escravos to Lagos Pipeline System from the Website.

The Escravos (Ugborodo is the real Itsekiri name of that area NOT Escravos) to Lagos Pipeline System supplies natural gas from the oil and gas-rich Itsekiriland in Delta State to Lagos State. There is ALSO another gas pipeline that supplies gas to other countries in West Africa that flows from the same Delta State axis.

Background
The 36-inch Escravos to Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) is a natural gas pipeline built in 1989 to supply gas from Escravos in the Niger Delta to various consumption utilization areas. Although the line starts at NGC's gas treatment plant in Warri, piped gas originates from Chevron's Escravos gas plant in Delta State It supplies gas to power plants in the South-west and also feeds the West African Gas Pipeline System, which is a component of the larger Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline.[4]

Escravos–Lagos II Expansion
In April 2019, NNPC's Group Managing Director announced plans to build an expansion, Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System II, which would double the existing pipeline's capacity to 2.2 billion cubic feet per day. Construction was expected to begin in the second quarter of 2020.[8][6][9] In February 2021, the NNPC announced that the expansion project, described as a "looping of the Excravos–Lagos Pipeline System", was complete.[7][5]

Gas explosions are dramatic but less frequent than electrical or combustible fires. If you can use a gas cylinder safely, you can use piped gas. There have been gas pipes on ikorodu road and in ilupeju for ages without incident.

It's all down to the expertise of the gas provider and the literacy of the citizen. If a person decides to dig on a clearly marked gas line then of course they heighten the risk.

Progress has risks.
