Rivers Politics: Stop The Abnormal Comparison

Alabi Umegbewe

I have read on different platforms, people struggling to defend the ingratitude of governor Fubara to Wike, comparing the the scenario between Amaechi and Wike with that of Fubara and Nyesom Wike. Obviously, these two scenarios are in clear contrast.

In 2006, when plans for 2007 election began, Nyesom Wike, Magnus Abe, Osy Ideozu and other prominent Rivers politicians formed a strong force to support Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi to run for governor of Rivers State. Worthy of note is the fact that all these men were already politicians and in government then, including Amaechi. To set the record straight, they did not come to government through Amaechi.

Collectively, they worked for Amaechi and he won the PDP primary then. When the process was distorted by the then president Obasanjo and sir Omehia was brought in as Amaechi's replacement, this same team championed the court case that brought Amaechi as governor. In keeping to their agreement, all of them were cabinet members in that government. One could say Amaechi passed integrity test.

Wike was Chief of Staff, Government House. He served with all dedication and sincerity, undertaking evey task assigned to him by the Governor.

When Rivers State got a slot for a minister of state, Amaechi nominated him and he eventually became minister of state for Education. This elevation did not severe his relationship with the governor.

When the fallout between President Jonathan and Amaechi erupted, Wike was among the leaders of Rivers State who visited Amaechi to appeal to him to reconcile with the president. Wike made obvious efforts to broker peace.

He was serving in Jonathan's cabinet, Jonathan's wife is from Rivers State and Jonathan was a South South brother seeking reelection as president. As a man of conscience, Wike looked at the bigger picture of brotherhood and decided to work for Jonathan after Amaechi had abandoned the PDP to APC.

As usual with Rivers people, a number of the political class went with him to APC because he was in charge of the allocation of the state.

While those leaders who visited him to sue for peace joined Wike to the PDP to support Jonathan.

When it was time for 2015 election, people like senator Lee, Ibinabo Michael West, Nyesom Wike and others jostled for PDP ticket and the party settled for Wike. Remember nobody was asked to step down for anyone.

His emergence strengthen the party in Rivers State. All the Senators, Rep members and Assembly members emerged on his slate and the bulk of the work was on his head. This gave birth to a New PDP under Wike's leadership.

Fortunately it was a victory for PDP in the state. Though Jonathan lost the presidential election, but he won overwhelmingly in Rivers State.

In all of these, Fubara was not and could not be in the picture.

Fastforward to 2023:

When it was time for Wike to leave office after his 8 year term, understanding the role he played in rebuilding the Party both at the federal and state levels, it would be irresponsible of him not to put the house in order.

A number of people indicated interest to succeed him. Unlike his predecessors, he had the privilege to determine who succeeded him. Eventually Sim Fubara found favour in his heart; it would have been anyone, and the outcome of the general election would not change.

In what I describe as the most difficult decision Wike had taken in his entire political career, he appealed to the other aspirants to give Fubara a chance. Recognizing him as the leader of the Party, they agreed to support Fubara. Those whom Fubara has become their second God today , were the same people who threatened to leave the party because their preferred aspirants were not selected.

Wike stepped on toes for the sake of Fubara. Wike lost Weight to enthrone Fubara. In fact, Wike put his all for Fubara.

All Assembly members, Commissioners, 23 local government chairmen and 319 Councillors had sleepless nights to deliver Sim on the instruction of our leader, Chief Barrister Nyesom Wike.

Unfortunately today, if Fubara was to ask God for anything and it would be granted immediately, I guess his request could be the Heads of Wike, Assembly members, Council Chairmen and some Councillors.

Yes, Jesus Christ was to be betrayed for the scripture to be fulfilled, should Judas Iscariot lend out himself for that purpose?

Wike is tyranical killer, an incurable election manipulator who can bribe the devil with blood of all his family in his insatiable quest for transient power. A Godforsaken loquacious scoundrel who believes in the ultimate power of more and more money, without ethics and finesse.

One day he will meet his waterloo for selling Rivers State for his personal gain. By then the resources to bribe his army of buffoons would have run dry.

Fubara is his nemesis and his part-payment for his evil deeds. The full payment will come in the fullness of time..

Water will find its level, eventually.. It's a law of Karma..

No amount of long reads will make any sane person support Wike because godfatherism does the country more harm than good.

A governor is the servant of the people, not his predecessor's lackey. There shouldn't be any room for godfatherism in a society that genuinely wants development. The wealth of the nation belongs to the people, not one man with a cracked voice.
