No fewer than 30 people were reportedly killed in Ayati village in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State Thursday night.

Sources told journalists in a telephone chat on Friday that local bandits and suspected armed herders unleashed terror on the village.

Ayati village is gradually becoming a slaughter slab in Ukum LGA.

Recall that the violent protest that led to the destruction of personal and government properties in the council a few weeks ago was as a result of the killing of 11 people in the Ayati community.

A resident of the community who did not want his name mentioned told our correspondent on Friday that bandits belonging to the Ayongou factional group in collaboration with Fulanis attacked and killed the innocent people Thursday night.

Corroborating this, a community leader in the council and one-time governorship aspirant in the state, Shima Ayati confirmed the attack and said that over 30 corpses have been recovered from the village.

Ayati who spoke in a telephone chat on Friday said, “What I heard is that some bandits received money from some herders to graze their animals in two council wards.

"As they were grazing, they came in conflict with farmers who ran to government. The government sent security who went and pursued the herders away. During the process, they burnt their (herders) makeshift tents.

They (herders) became angry as they claimed to have given money for the land, so they went back to the bandits. The herders joined hands with the bandits to attack the village and massacre people.

“We have already gathered over 30 corpses. They are still searching.”

Meanwhile, the state police command spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident but said she was yet to get details of the attack.

She said, “I’m aware there was an attack and I’m waiting for briefing from officers on ground.”

During the protest, even though there were no protest in Benue, the wasnt still any case of bandit attack, neither did the herdsmen attack any village for those 7days

Fair to the herdsmen were also protesting then

Benue residents should take the bull by the horn and hitting these guys on sight

They should start chasing them away from their communities too. U cant keep waiting for the Govt to attack when one of your family members die everyday

This is beyond tragic.

How many more innocent lives must be lost before action is taken?

The government seems to be turning a blind eye while these herdsmen continue their reign of terror.

It’s disheartening to see that the blood of our people is so cheap in the eyes of those in power.

Rest in peace. That's all I have to say. I am tired of complaining about killings in Nigeria.

Tinubu's legacy is killings, deaths, loss of lives, extra judicial killings.

Same way Lagos was in the early 2000s.

This is barbaric and sad. Imagine people being killed in their own home for no reason other than being a citizen of a particular village or town. When will all this stop? Hmmm

This is just too much to bear. How many lives must be lost before the government takes action? Fulani herdsmen and their bandit allies are turning our communities into slaughter grounds. We cannot continue to live in fear while innocent people are being killed. Enough is enough!

Why is it that we only hear of these tragic events when the so-called "peaceful" herdsmen are involved?

Over 50 lives lost like it's just another statistic, while the authorities sit back and watch, as if Peter Obi’s presence could magically make them disappear.

Is this the same Nigeria that we hope to build? Because if it is, then we are in serious trouble.

How many more lives will it take before we realize that this is not just a random occurrence but a deliberate attack on our existence?

Fighting for what? A grazing route that should have been sorted out ages ago? We need more than just words; we need action!

Mumu Benue

For how long should they allow these bandits to waste them like fouls undecided

They must have many betrayals among themselve for the attacks to continue till now.

Ask why till now, the attacks is yet to spread to neigboring Enugu and Ebonyi states?. They welcomed those killers

MANNABBQGRILL will not show face here now that his Tiv people are under another heartless attack. No wonder the Governor accused his people of collaborating with herdsmen to kill their people, only a Tiv man like MANNABBQGRILL with also Eriggs as alternate will come online and still refer to Buhari as our "Darling Daddy" on this platform for over 8 years, it means that the Governor was right

These people and communities that have been ravaged by bad governance need to come out to protests. Obviously, sitting back doing nothing has not helped them nor anyone else.. undecided
