Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, has called on Nigerians to take a collective stance in supporting the Dangote refinery project, warning against any attempts to impede its progress.

Abubakar’s statement comes amid a conflict between the refinery and Nigerian regulatory authorities.

On August 8, the Dangote refinery said the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has been reluctant to enforce the domestic crude supply obligation (DCSO) to ensure that it receives its full crude requirement.

In response, the NUPRC denied the claim, stating that it facilitated the supply of 29 million barrels of crude oil to the refinery between January and June.

However, the Dangote refinery said it has not received the 29 million barrels of crude.

Speaking on the issue on Saturday, Atiku said the Dangote Refinery project is a significant investment that is “positioned to meet our energy and forex needs”.

The former vice-president also expressed concern over potential sabotage of the project.

He urged Nigerians to take “resolute actions” to ensure its success.

“Each parent eagerly awaiting the arrival of a child will dutifully undertake the necessary measures to ensure that the nurturing and development of this precious blessing remain a primary focus,” Abubakar wrote on X.

“This fundamental principle applies equally to investments, whether they be local or international.

“With this understanding, I am cautious in considering any deliberate attempts to impede the progress of the Dangote Refinery, a significant private sector project positioned to meet our energy and forex needs.

“Alongside numerous fellow citizens of goodwill, I call upon all Nigerians to take resolute actions to provide reassurance that both internal and external forces are not collaborating to prevent us from reaping the benefits promised by this eagerly anticipated transformative endeavour.”

On June 4, Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest person, said some international oil companies (IOCs) are struggling to supply crude to his refinery.

Speaking on Arise TV on July 15, Gbenga Komolafe, chief executive officer of the NUPRC, described the claim as “erroneous”, noting that the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) has provisions that guide willing buyer-willing seller transactions.

But a few days later, the management of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) insisted that the IOCs were frustrating its request to purchase crude feedstock for the refinery.

That's what I was telling by brother when we were discussing. Even if Dangote is not perfect and perhaps has glaring case of monopoly or not or only him pocket Nigeria or not, this is not the time to drag him upanda. All the government need right now is to support that huge project and make it work. If things keep going the way it is, it will definitely stand as red flag to foreign investors and may scare them away. Plus if it works, the case of landing cost of petrol (transportating from Europe) might not even arise i.e, making petrol cost to reduce.

Since when are we supposed to be fighting for Dangote's interest?

When the government was patronizing and giving him favours, did he remember us, the people?

Atiku don dey talk again!

As if his own time as VP was not filled with its own failures.

Now he wants to play savior for Dangote? Make we hear word!

This man is just looking for relevance, while the real issues remain unsolved. Na today? Let's focus on real leaders, not recycled politicians!

Atiku should focus on his own failures before pointing fingers at others. Always playing the blame game while Nigerians continue to suffer. We need leaders who take responsibility, not ones who just make empty promises.

Just imagine all the comments so far on this thread. To think these are coming from the so called youths who took to streets few days ago protesting for good conditions from govt. All displaying attributes of compasses that have lost gimbals. They will all soon jump to another thread only to continue repeating same cacophony of noise as obtains in market places without any target in sight.

Every sector Dangote entered, he bosses it and blows out all competition via special privileges from the govt.

In the case of oil and gas, Buhari and cohorts had fronted Dangote to build the refinery so that majority of the govt revenue will be routed through that process.

That is the back-bone that Tinubu is trying to break.

The power players in the oil and gas industry will never allow Dangote to just come in gain control of the flow of major chunk of Nigeria's revenue. .

He will not win that battle. . The best Dangote can achieve is to compete with others, source his crude from abroad, or divest and sell the refinery.

Atiku should rest.

The internal forces are Tinubu, Mele Kyari and Tinubu families while the external forces are their business partners abroad so how does Atiku expect Tinubu to take action?

Just remember power will shift and Dangote will be recompensed

If Tinubu lets this fail history won’t forgive him

I was thinking after he became president maybe he might be the greatest yoruba leader, but right now it’s still Awolowo, Obasanjo is second, Osinbajo is third and Tinubu is not even on the list of great leaders

Where's the monopoly they're even claiming?

Dangote came into cement business, we had other cement manufacturers like Benue cement and Lafarge and many came after he came into the business. They were businesses Dangote couldn't compete, he ran out. Where's the claim of monopoly coming from?

If our leaders are just not about themselves, why should it be difficult for them to support a project that's existing in favour of Nigeria? How many years is Dangote going to be here?

They just want importation to continue so they can claim imaginary subsidy.

Our local man sets a refinery in Nigeria. He refuses to buy from middlemen. Now, they want to end him for refusing to buy the same oil produced in his country from foreign middlemen in dollars.

What is the essence of Building the Refinery in Nigeria....
Some of you guys deserve Nigeria.

External forces are the main reasons Nigeria remains stagnated, followed by corruption. They truly know once we begin to get it right, we will become threats to the entire world in development. We also have the best of climate apart from vast human and natural resources God has blessed us with.

We can all see how Nigerians are doing great in the diaspora in all human endeavours, including smartest of crimes loool. Before anyone can breach their technology and still outsmart them, that person must definitely be super intelligent. They know. Imagine they use same brain to do great positive things.

Unfortunately, our leaders are so blind to all these. We also have the population, to cap it all.

I hate capitalists. Atiku and dangote are capitalists that feed fat on hiking prices of basic commodity. This was a case when federal govt then gave Dangote free hands to be sole producer or marketer of cement, sugar in Nigeria. Later dangote wanted to become sole producer of staple food items such as pasta, flowers, salt etc but those didn't yielded triple returns as cement does to him. It is on our misery and common patrimony that dangote becomes richest man in Nigeria and Africa.

Akitu should not stop supporting his co capitalists will milk Nigerians dried while improvising us more by price hike beyond reach of masses.
