Nigerians are reacting after Mia Le Roux, a 28-year-old model and marketing manager, was crowned Miss South Africa 2024. Le Roux, the first deaf woman to win the title, emerged victorious in a competition marked by controversy, including the withdrawal of Nigerian-South African contestant Chidimma Adetshina due to online harassment over her heritage. In her acceptance speech, Le Roux expressed hope that her victory would inspire those who feel excluded from society. Meanwhile, Adetshina's withdrawal sparked discussions about xenophobia and "afrophobia" in South Africa.

Who is Mia Le Roux - the new Miss South Africa?

Mia Le Roux is a 28-year-old from the Western Cape province.

She was born in Sasolburg, Free State, and grew up in Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape.

The new Miss South Africa is a marketing manager, model, and part-time B Com Marketing student.

At one year old, she was diagnosed with severe hearing loss, meaning she has limited hearing.

She shared that it took her two years of speech therapy before she could say her first words.

She added that her community rallied behind her and gave her the gift of hearing, inspiring her to make a positive impact and break barriers.

She describes herself as resilient, dedicated, graceful, and kind.

After winning, the model and marketing manager said, "I am a proudly South African deaf woman, and I know what it feels like to be excluded. I now know that I was put on this planet to break boundaries, and I did that tonight."

How people are reacting to her win

There have been numerous reactions to Mia Le Roux's emergence as the new Miss South Africa on social media.

While some praised and congratulated her, others expressed dissatisfaction, accusing South Africa of harboring hate towards black people.

Among those who reacted was Grammy Award-winning artist Burna Boy, who posted on his social media account, saying, "So after all," followed by a laughing emoji.

Reno Omokri, a former special assistant to former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, also commented. He said, "I sincerely hope those South Africans who didn’t consider Chidinma to be their representative feel represented now."

I don't think Nigerians will allow citizens of other countries to be crowned miss Nigeria so they should end this talk already.

But after all the noise they crowned a whitie. Nelson Mandela must be proud of them

Who told you Chidimma is citizen of other country ? all her life she has been living in South Africa and was born there so she is legally a citizen of South Africa.

They bullied her because she's black and as loyal slaves they want to continue to be the favorite slaves of their white masters, it is just like when a master have two servants working under him and one of the servants want to be the only one serving and receiving favours and is doing everything to chase away the other servant so that she can be the only one serving and receiving favours, instead of both of them to work together so they can liberate themselves and also become masters.

South African black fear other black will replace them in south Africa which is really impossible when they see other black doing well they feel like they are getting replaced, they don't want to lose the current economic and political power they currently have in South Africa to other black but they don't mind if the white control everything, i think apartheid did serious damage to their mentality.

Smokescreen.

They are giving it to a deaf person to douse the tension that was already brewing.

At least nobody will argue the legitimacy of the competition any further seeing that a disabled person won.

That's a different ball game...but it will happen. If it's politics, it's a different ball game. Nigerians don't give a shit about beauty pageants.

Sleep-walking back into colonialism.
Botragelad's ppl again.
Hope Nigerians are learning:

- wherever you go, NEVER undermine your fellow black ppl by doing betraying them before the whites , selling drugs to their children, scamming them or illegalities, because when you do, you affect the ability of other black ppls to rise.
This is why the south Africans and black Americans hate us.
We are betrayers to the Black Hope.

Stop please. She was born in South Africa, and hence a citizen and qualified to contest. Whatever her mum did when she was an infant has no bearing on her citizenship.

They will rather preferr a deaf or blind white woman to win than a South African of Nigerian heritage.

She was not disqualified, she resigned from the contest. Her mother is from Mozambique not Nigeria and she is South African by birth irrespective of whatever crime her Mozambican mother committed while her father is Nigerian without any criminal record.
