Now that the Paris Olympics 2024 has officially ended and our dear Team Nigeria, despite the huge financial investment made into the project, is returning without a single medal, let me unreservedly register my displeasure with the performance of our team and their handlers.

The rascality and recklessness that has continued to characterise leadership in our nation in nearly every department. The general impression that has come to stick is the one that portrays our country as a joke, even on the international stage.

How can one explain that a country like Jamaica spent less than 5% of what we spent on our contingents for the Paris Olympics 2024 and won as many as 6 medals. Yet with our huge financial investments and large contingent, we could not win even a single medal?

At least nine African countries won gold but the giant with over 200m people came home without even a bronze! We invested about N12 billion in this year’ s Olympics, which is almost twice the amount budgeted for the entire Ministry of Science and Technology for this year.

This is over N136 million (about $85,000) spent on each of the 88 Nigerian contingents to the Olympics, and no single medal was won while Jamaica, a nation which spent far less than we did, a total of about $2300 on each contingent, won 6 medals; 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze at the Olympics. We must now interrogate the relationship between this huge investment and our dismal outcome. Sad stories like this are our lot only because we have refused to embrace competence and capacity over routine and favouritism in Nigeria.

Let us consider the case of Favour Ofili, a Nigerian professional sprinter who trained for years for the 2024 Olympics, only for her name to be recklessly and wrongly removed from the list of athletes for the 100m race at the Olympics by Nigerian sporting authorities.

What explanation can anyone give about Annette Echikunwoke, a former Nigerian hammer thrower, who was frustrated by the same rascality of some Nigerian leaders, making her switch her allegiance to the United States, where she eventually won a medal in the just completed Olympics?

These same professional athletes were denied the opportunity to represent our nation in Tokyo 2020, for similar reasons of administrative recklessness. I have it on good authority that some injured athletes, not physically fit to represent the country and not competing in the ongoing Olympics, were there in Paris receiving estacodes from our national resources. Some of the sports officials and others who have no reason to be at the Olympics were there too, living large and feeding fat on the estacodes while our nation was crashing out on every sporting event. One of our athletes, Ese Ukpeseraye, had to borrow a bicycle to compete at her sporting event!
How can one sensibly explain such recklessness and infamy?

What a country! What a shame! When do we stop these rascalities that always rob our nation of golden opportunities to make a positive change? I call on the government to investigate these gross misconducts and make sure that those responsible do not have the opportunity to do so again. We must build a nation of discipline and commitment to duty, where competence and capacity reign. That is the New Nigeria we preach, and it is POssible. -PO

With a president who loves sports, our sportsmen and women would have got more attention, training and support to perform better.

Election has consequences.

Even small countries like Kenya, South Africa , Uganda, Zambia, Egypt, Jamaica all went home with medals what excuses will apc government now give, did the previous administration also kill sports or did the fuel price increment also impact on sports deliverables.

Very soon Nigerians will realize that apc really has nothing to offer Nigeria in any sector they are performing woefully. Economy is contracting at the speed of light , security sector is already gone , sports sector has shown it is degrading.

Infrastructure is not doing fantastic.

The only thing that seems to be working in Nigeria is the attempt by urchins like Reno , onanugs etc to scapegoat igbos into the descent of the apc government into obscurity

How can they win when the government hasn't made any consented effort for them to deliver. Japanese has a population of less than 130 million people and they won 25 medals or even more. With 200 million people which Nigeria boost all the time, they couldn't win any medal. Nigerians population is quantity, not quality. Kenya πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ even won some medals

Well, has Peter Obi expressed his own disappointment in losing the 2023 presidential elections?

How many times did he support the athletes?

In his lamentations, he failed to proffer solutions. He only claimed the money spent on athletes was more than what was spent in the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Because I am all for solutions and no lamentations, I like to propose as follows:

(1) We can't prepare for an event three months before when we had a clear 4-year window. We need to start preparing for the next Olympics NOW!

(2) We have certain events where we have comparative advantages. For example, swimming amd canoeing. The Niger Delta folks with preparation can easily shine here. Some people expressed surprise that break dancing was part of the Olympics. I am reasonably well traveled and I can say Nigeria has some of the best dancers in the world. We can also stand out in archery and diving given adequate preparation.

(3) We also must revive Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), Nigerian Polytechnic Games Association (NIPOGA), Principal's Cup, National Sports Festival and get corporate organizations to participate.

(4) All tertiary institutions must make two sporting activities compulsory for students, even if it is chess. It helps the mind.

(5) Let universities provide full scholarships for talented student-athletes. They can look for a sport-loving corporate organization to endow such a fund.

(6) As a matter of urgency, let people who are truly passionate about sports take charge of sporting federations.

(7) Let us look at countries doing well and copy what they did. By identifying talents and grooming them, we can make it.

Let me start by stating that I am not disappointed in Team Nigeria. Despite the fact that the female basketball team, D'Tigress, were blocked in the last Olympics by one sports minister, they made a good showing in this year's Olympics, defeating Australia and Canada. Rene Wakama made a brilliant showing and won the best coach at the Olympics. Favour Ofili, we are sorry it did not go as planned. Train harder and you'd only get better. We'd support you the best way we can. Blessing Oborodudu, you came close the last time. We hope you'd get even better. Ese Brume, you won for us before; we have faith in you. The male relay team, you surely learnt your lessons and would avoid the mistakes next time. For the weightlifters, please work harder. For those I might have forgotten, those of us who have had to represent others understand the pressure you faced carrying the burden and hopes of a country.

I believe I speak the minds of sensible Nairalanders and Nigeria when I say:

WE ARE GRATEFUL!

I haven't had high expectations since Atlanta 1996!

It's such a shame how we keep retrogressing in almost every sector of this nation.

The only finalist was Igbo Favour Ofili and her 100m place was sabotaged by the hateful tribe.
