Very expensive school. But they try to educate their students beyond traditional academics.

Their students are mostly the best when they compete in state wide competitions.

It's a common word and occasion for those who studied in private schools in southern and eastern Nigeria. I did prom twice in high school: Year 9 and Year 12 somewhere in Edo and Enugu respectively. My younger one did hers in Port Harcourt last month. Good schools do prom,l.

I appreciate your honesty as that is likely the major reason behind those who vehemently criticise them. It is one of the disadvantages of living as a middle-class to an upper-middle-class individual in Nigeria: one gets so much envy from nearby people and passers-by.

A video of students from the University Preparatory Secondary School (UPSS), a popular private secondary school in Benin City, has caused a stir online. The video shows the students arriving at their prom in expensive cars and lavish attire.

However, one person on X, formerly known as Twitter, pointed out that UPSS is one of the most expensive private secondary schools in Edo State, Benin City. Given this, they noted that the parents of these students are likely very wealthy and can afford such a lavish lifestyle for their children.
How much is the school fee for a term in say SS1?

cc: folake4u You mentioned excellent academics. Please do you have access to where the JAMB and WASSCE scores of their students are published? Where do the majority of their alumni end up after secondary school education? Private universities in Nigeria? Federal universities or abroad (which of the abroad)? I know the questions are plentiful, but I am just curious because those are some of the metrics used to assess how academically good a secondary school is.

I hate display of wealth in a colourless environment: you see a mansion sitting near trash, hotels with poor drainage systems, big schools not looking after their surroundings... We show wealth but live in trash. Our wealth should reflect in our words, character and surrounding. Everybody should play their part in governance, in discharging their duties and keeping the environment clean! We're just after our own, our own, e no concern me, e no concern me. Abeg, I'm beginning to sound off topic, but I know what I'm saying.
It takes a lot of learning and mental introspection to implement such if one is born and bred in Nigeria. Where it pains is if the residents residing there once lived abroad. I don't understand how supposedly educated people who studied, worked and lived abroad will now reside in dirty environments with untarred roads coupled with no constant electricity. The other day I read on Instagram that the Chevron area, an elitist area in Lagos, did not have electricity for three days!

It is a major reason I doubt the supposed intelligence of Nigerians.

I can't remember how much their fees cost again. I don't know the current price.

No, I don't have access to where the scores of the students are published.

They end up majorly in private schools, abroad and few end up in public schools.

A good example of an alumnus is Amarachi, Winner of Nigeria's Got Talent Show.

All in all, the students of the school are sound. Unfortunately, I don't have "data" to show to you. Lol.

Good to know. So, it is well-balanced. Why the hullabaloo about the perceived ostentatiousness? It is good when readers with knowledge of the school's exploits put out this information so the conversation is well-balanced.

Just checked: the school's alumnus Stephen had the second highest JAMB score in 2023.

I can't remember how much their fees cost again. My brother went to the school like 8 years ago and that time a single term was within the range of 200-500k. I don't know the current price. No, I don't have access to where the scores of the students are published. They end up majorly in private schools, abroad and few end up in public schools (like my brother). A good example of an alumni of the school is Amarachi, Winner of Nigeria's Got Talent Show. She was my brother's classmate and she proceeded to a private university. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amarachi. All in all, the students of the school are sound. Unfortunately, I don't have "data" to show to you. Lol.
Thanks for the info. Before your post, I did a bit of search and saw the school produced the second-highest JAMB scorer in 2024. Not a mean feat. So, the school is good by all accounts. I have a lot of work to do regarding checking the trajectories of alumni of the most expensive secondary schools in Nigeria. That will be one interesting study.

You are a rich girl o! Got any of your friends to recommend? wink

At the bold, you don catch me. grin I like a data-driven discourse. It makes everything interesting and edutaining.

These kids go on holidays to the USA and Europe. I am not surprised at all.
Their parents must be upper-middle class at least and possess permanent residency considering how battered the Nigerian passport is these days.

Nissan ... Toyota ... such expensive cars ... description of a poor man. That's how students arrive at proms ... in stretch limos etc ... but that's American culture ... why are we adapting this? But on the other hand .... I'm happy to see the guys sporting African hairstyles ... braids and dreads. I guess the EFCC were not around ... or is it they dare not arrest these upper class kids? ...dreadlocks and 'expensive cars" and not hauled in as yahoo boys?

The best secondary schools in Benin are as follows:

1. UPSS - Siluko Road

2. St Mary's - Sapele Road

3. Igbinedion - M/M Way

A Prof. of Education in UNIBEN has shown his onions in his field of study by running the best secondary school in the state. Nothing less is expected.
