Health Minister Ali Pate says doctors and nurses trained in Nigeria are sought-after globally, and that 67% of them work in the United Kingdom (UK).

The minister, on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Tuesday, said if health workers of Nigerian origin pull out of the National Health Service (NHS), the service will struggle.

He spoke on the new National Policy on Health Workforce Migration approved by President Bola Tinubu to tackle the exodus of health workers from Nigeria in a phenomenon colloquially known as ‘Japa’.

He said Nigerian doctors and nurses are attractive and the country should be proud of that. He noted that not all Nigerian health workers leave the country and that those who leave have their reasons for exiting.

He said the policy “is really about health diplomacy and promoting ethical recruitment practices”.

“The recruitment countries; that recruit our professionals, should they not have some responsibilities help us expand the training? Because the strain of health workers’ migration is continuous; it’s not going to stop tomorrow.

“UK will need Nigerian doctors. 67% of our doctors go to the United Kingdom and 25% of the NHIS workforce is Nigerian. shocked

“Does the UK, for instance, want to consider expanding the pre-service education? Can we have corridors that allow us to have a compact that ‘you’ll take so but you will also help us train more so you will replace them’? That is in the realm of health diplomacy and ethical replacement,” Pate said.

“Nigerians are very vibrant, very entrepreneurial, and very capable wherever they are. If Nigerians hold back from the UK, for instance, the NHS will struggle to provide the services that many Nigerians are going there to get,” he added.

Pate said over 75% of health workers trained in the last year have left Nigeria to other countries as economic migrants. “We have good training centres here, and the universities are doing a great job,” he admitted.

He said there is freedom of movement and the government cannot stop them from leaving but the government will make it conducive for them to stay and practice in Nigeria.

He said the new policy will facilitate incentives for medical workers to stay in Nigeria with improved welfare packages as well as enhanced capacity development.

Another area of focus of the new policy is the promotion of a decent work environment that is not beyond 12 hours per shift.

sad

Thing is, in all honesty, even if theres a pay rise in that sector, say 100% increase, it would still be far lower to what they're being paid in the UK

Presidency should meet the NMA and dialogue with them on what to do to reduce brain drain in that sector, cause as E dey go like this, na mortality rate don dey increase o

FG should increase their pay 100% first...you can't pay medical doctors peanut while you buy yourself 5bn yatch and pay 90bn for nonsense Saudi Arabia pilgrimage and expect the doctors not to look for greener pastures.

Give them 100% pay raise first

Health sector is one of the easiest route to Japa from this shit hole.

Health workers abroad are regarded and paid well than the one over here.

I think what Nigeria needs is to allow health workers who finished from public institutions to leave Nigeria after practicing in Nigeria for at least 5 years.

However, they have to pay the Nigerian government an annual support fee of $5k for 5 years. This will go into funding more schools of health across the country, improving their research, improving the working conditions of health workers who still work in Nigeria and increasing the number of such schools across the country. It's a 50-50 deal.

A simple google search will tell you how stupid your minister sounds.
Our leaders should learn how to talk so that these western countries will start taking us seriously.

Nigerian health workers (both doctors and nurses) are not even up to 10% of NHS work force.

Go and verify!

They are not up to 0.2% to start with.

They make so much noise about Nigerian healthcare workers migrating abroad whereas Kenyans with lower population than Nigeria migrate more. Kenya now have an Nclex-rn exam center meaning they are even more recognized than these Nigerian noisemakers killing their citizens' chances out of wickedness and senseless policies against Japa.

They keep focusing on the negative side only without looking at the greater side of our Doctors and Nurses migrating abroad.

These guys bring back huge FOREX that have been helping Nigeria's economy without these fools in government knowing.

As it stands now Nigeria need at least 60million Nigerians to migrate abroad legally to earn enough FOREX to stabilize Nigeria's economy and to curb mass youth unemployment but these fools in government don't know

No matter how much you pay, they would still leave except you are ready to pay them upwards of £50,000 a year.

And this is for all professions and not just doctors. Engineers, pharmacists, nurses, physiotherapists, e.t.c

For Nigeria to have more medical professionals - doctors in particular - the government should establish a system where they will sponsor first degree best graduating students in Life Science courses, who still aspire to become medical doctors but don't have the financial capability to study the course. It is going to be a long-term plan that will benefit the country immensely. Of course, it will come with the condition that, after the study, they MUST practice here.

There you have it people!!

Your minister is more concerned about the UK NHS crashing than improving welfare of the doctors here in Nigeria which may make those in UK decide to come back home to practice.🤣🤣🤣🤣

These are your leaders !! These are the venomous demons Tinubu deemed worthy to work in your interests.

Like a British official said today on LinkedIn, the troubles Air peace is facing in the UK about landing in Heathrow is caused by your fellow Nigerians in government who don't want Air peace to succeed.

Just imagine that. Let that sink in. Just as dangote is facing struggles from Tinubu's government same way Air peace too.
..just know that Tinubu and his government do not want life to be easy for you the citizens.

They enjoy seeing you suffer.
