The Senate has broken its silence on the claim by Senator Kawu Sumaila (NNPP, Kano South) that each serving senator receives N21 million monthly.

In reaction to the claim, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC Ekiti South), said the National Assembly receives only 1% of the federal budget.

Sumaila had in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service said he receives N21 million as monthly take home in salaries and allowances.

Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Mohammed Shehu, had earlier said each senator receives a total of N1,063,860 million in salary and allowances per month.

But Adaramodu said, “The National Assembly receives about 1% of the federal budget and has never exceeded this, even when the non-availability of funds is pervasive.

Adaramodu said: “For the umpteen time, the Senate is compelled to react to the obsolete allegations of a phantom salary and personal emoluments spuriously credited to Senators monthly.

“The Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission, the agency of government that fixes political officials’ salaries and allowances, has duly disclosed the monthly personal take-home of Senators.

“However, all arms of Government and their personnel, Governors, Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Directors-General, State Commissioners, even Boards and parastatals, including local government councils run their activities with running costs and the National Assembly is not an exemption.

“Thus the money referred to by Senator Kawu Sumaila is neither his salary nor personal allowance.

‘It’s for the daily running of offices by Senators and other attached statutory officials. It equally provides funds for Constituency office staff. It is also for oversight functions and community engagements.

“This funds are not static and it’s provided for in the annual budget. Such funds are retired by relevant officers after being used for official purposes and proof of genuine expenditure.

It’s not a personal allowance or salary of the legislator.

“The National Assembly receives about one per cent of the federal budget and has never exceeded this, even when the non-availability of funds is pervasive.

“The Nigerian Senate is an Assembly of accomplished and successful professionals, administrators and captains of industries, who are not driven by these often touted egregious pecuniary bits, rather for their patriotic zeal in the nation’s quest to breathe life to Nigeria’s political and socio-economic dry bones.”

With the way Nigeria Senator spend, that 20million is just too small for the lifestyle they live.

Salary is just a decoy, constituency fund is where they are siphoning money. Remove that and see them go back to square one.

Who would spend millions or even billions to get into the senate to be paid N1 million monthly?

Since they have chosen to make their actual monthly take home including allowances a secrete we will keep taunting them with whatever huge figures we hear

Thieves in power.

My dear Nigerians.... This is one thing I'll tell you, Majority of Nigerians do not deserve to live in a place like Nigeria. Just travel to a developed country like the USA and you will nearly cry at what we have been forced to accept as normal. Things that are seen as basic are what we look to as luxury. Just sad.

Our leaders have failed us woefully!!!

Are you crazy? You are only trying to speak grammar here. Whatever name you called it, do you receive 21m monthly or not? You are talking about retirement of the fund, swear with your life that you have ever retired such fund before. Very corrupt senate.

Why will running cost be paid monthly into personal account? Why will legislature have even 0.001% of executive privilege? Oga send the list of what you need to the NASS commission to implement and stop taking part in overhead cost.... It is immoral to collect 21mil monthly from poor people.

We are not all in primary school, that you will come with half truth to convince us.

Much ado about nothing as usual. Even if senators collect 100k monthly, the way Nigerians are and the way things are structured, nothing will change. You're barking the wrong tree guys. We need strengthened institutions and policies, not cosmetic i have one shoe and Nokia phone for 20years politics.
Civil servants in Lagos earn much more than their counterparts in other states, the difference in general efficiency is as clear as noon day. If you think that having paupers as senators is the way forward in a trillion economy, sorry, you passed through school but bluntly resisted school passing through you.

You didn't tell us how much you actually collect though

Senate is an assembly of accomplished professionals indeed. It is why you guys get there for once and would never want to go back again. If most of you had a fulfilling, professional lives as you claim, you wouldn't make National Assembly your forever abode, retirement plan and be ready to kill to remain there.

Senator Aderamodu didn't deny the allegation. He said the 21 million naira was not meant for personal use but for running office like buying stationery, letterhead. I don't really know what he meant by running office. Do senators pay for their aides themselves? NO; Do senators pay for diesel for powering their offices? NO. There should be a request office for stationeries.

Let's assume you spend some money to run your office, Why is this money paid to their personal account? He talks about director-general having money to run office. Do they pay these money to director-general's personal account. This is a poor fiscal accountability, fraudulent and distasteful. Anyone can squander money in his or her personnel account. Is this how other senate are run in other part of the world? The truth is that the woman senator that report 21m naira is also lying. The money is probably 40m monthly.

I don't think senators deserve constituency fees. What can you do with say 100m constituency allowance? How do you even award the contract? These are ploy to steal monies of our sweat and blood.

There is no transparency in Nigerian politics

Nigerians are aware that the National Assembly is not Truthful ,in their dealings with Nigerians, neither is the body fixing the Salaries and Allowances, for they purposely removed Salaries and Allowances, from their pay, just to hide it from the Public,by thinking they are fooling Nigerians.
How can you say - you don't know how much you receive on Monthly,or yearly basis from an organisation and not to talk of other unaccounted Money they often see in their Accounts?
This Is the More you look the less you see.
Those who designed this Constitution are not Sincere,at all and must not be allowed to continue,as Politicians have turned NIGERIA Country to be Personal Beneficial Lamb 🐑 instead of the Public good,For All Of US.See,as the Masses Are Suffering, while they are smiling to the Banks!
Why are African like this- selfish, wicked to the People they are representing, only 'I Before Others' when it should have been otherwise!
This Is not the way the Americans (USA) runs their System and it's a Slavery Experience here in Nigeria and being a Politician does not make you Super- human, just to represent the People for the greater good but now,we are in a State of regret!
The System we are Practicing is Compromised and Corruption filthy.
Very disgusting and Shameful!
