I think the fearful nature is due to the PTSD from how the Northerners treated them on multiple occasions. So they fear North so much and give them some kind of politically superior status.

I'm actually from the north, but to be honest, the lost gas really lost it's way in Nigeria, the north built great empires before the formation of Nigeria.
