Do you know how many Nigerians have bsc and hnd?

In the private world, it's not about what you have, it's about what you can offer.

Don't mislead people.

I have OND and HND both upper credits

I am a chartered accountant

In the last 6 months, I've gotten 3 offers, with the least offer 250k net.

It's what you can offer, not the certificate you hold

I work in d oil n gas sector...companies like shell, chevron ,nlng etc rely on polytechnic graduates for tech jobs.Oil rig workers etc are usually mech or electrical engineering frm polytechnic.
Dont be ignorant.if mobil employ 200 peopl..180 will be technicians wit polytechnic hnd as their engineers.they do not employ bsc as engineers bt as managers. We hav more bsc graduates engineers who are jobless than polytechnic

When will you get that they are trying to save cost? See what you said. Bsc as managers. Except a person don't want to get to managerial level and want to be a subordinate all through life then such a person can go to Polytechnics

Wether B.Sc or HND or their seniors, M.Sc, M.A or PHd... better go and get a skill.

In Nigeria and in the future all the above will matter but little, it is your skill that will sell.

The papers issued when you get all these qualifications are nothing but papers but your skill is the real you internalised.

Remember I didn't say don't get them, I said also get a skill.

My take is, get a skill or get BSC or get both but avoid Polytechnics. I have seen a lot . Discrimination is high especially in corporate environment

Even though i know there is always an exemption to a norm, the example you quoted are very few, for every one of your uncle who got managerial position with HND, i will show you hundreds of BSC holders who got same. I will also show you thousands of HND holders who did not even though they are good.

Tech space is dynamic bro. Many HND holders are not in tech. Majority are slaves in all the top tier banks. You mentioned Wema. I'm talking about all the tier 1 banks like Zenith, First bank, Access, GTb and UBA. That your uncle won't get such positions in these banks.

You don't get my point? I have friends who started as support staff with BSC and today all have gotten a better offer with another banks. Can't say the same for my colleagues who started banking with HND. Very few got a better offer. Most were turned down at interview stage due to HND. BSC and HND won't guarantee jobs but out of two people, if one have HND and the other has BSC and both have same experience, the one with BSC will have an edge in getting a better offer

Your problem is not the institution, you are actually a very unfortunate fellow.

Even if you attend a University, you will blame your course of study for your misfortune.

If you study your desired course, you will blame your class of degree for your misfortune

If you even get a very good class of degree, you will blame the government.

Leave story and blame your village people. They have made you unable to see opportunities.

Lol. You're pained because you are working in a polytechnic right ? I get cos once Government close all those mushroom Polytechnics you might be out of job.

You are right my problem is not the institution, neither is it the Government nor is it the unsuspecting students that go to Polytechnics.

My problem is people like you who tell people to blame village people after spoiling peoples lives by giving them wrong advice due to your selfish reasons. You want to keep eating from peoples ignorance and sweat and tell them school doesn't matter

I'm fortunate today because Nigerian Polytechnics didn't get a hold on me and i will advice others not to enter their trap.

Maybe you teach in a polytechnic a.k.a slave camp but trust me, very soon your school will be scraped and unsuspecting students will be free from your grip. Mr Fortunatus

I attended Lagos State Polytechnic and bagged HND. Omo, I regret being a Polytechnic graduate.
Presently, I am undergoing a Doctorate degree with AEFUNAI.
The struggle of going through PGD (18mths), M.Sc (18mths) was not easy so if you want to advance your career, I'd advise you take your academic route via the University.

Look at this wretch saying I teach in a Polytechnic. First off, I don't teach there but have my own businesses. From experience, I prefer employing products of polytechnics. They are usually more resilient and good executioners of projects.

I have encouraged many to take Project Mgt certifications and then get certifications from Europe, particularly Germany cos they are relatively affordable.

When I had a projects with oil firms, I met many products of polytechnics. Is it those in Seplat, Mobil, or various OSCs in PH and Eket we wan talk?

It doesnt matter wat they trying to do...we are talking of employability n m telling u if u hav a distinction in mech eng or electrical engineer u hav a higher chance to get work in oil n gas than someone wit bsc 1st class mechanical engineering. The companies dont need people wit bsc as their technician...hnd is ok for them as they will also take years to train this employees to d standard they want.

D technicians still become managers.wat as most of dem later update to msc level while working wit less stress.their employment margin for bsc is very small...bt mch larger for d tech guys as engineers are always needed in high demand

If you are reading this and you want to enroll in a polytechnic or have someone who wants to enroll in any polytechnic in Nigeria please I'm on my knees crying for you. Don't waste your future.

Instead, go and learn a trade and keep applying for jamb.

I repeat, please and please i beg all students of any polytechnic in Nigeria to boycott Polytechnics and sit for jamb again.

We were lucky we escaped the polytechnic slave camp but most people are not and the senior citizens in Nigeria keep operating and encouraging people to go to Polytechnics.

How can you encourage your fellow man or woman to go to polytechnic and you call yourself a Christian or Muslim?

Will you be happy seeing your children fall into a ditch? Why encouraging other people's children to fall into the same ditch?

Those adamant ones who will read this write-up and still say it doesn't matter. Do a quick research Check, most polytechnic lecturers don't allow their children go to Polytechnics ( a.k.a fall into a ditch)

We can't be treating some citizens as slaves and keep encouraging slave camps. Recently, a polytechnic was threatening students who refused to pay the hiked school fees not to come for test. Please o yee prospective slaves, that test cannot help your career. Ruuuuuun for your lives.

Most Corporate companies in Nigeria see Polytechnic graduates as failures. People who couldn't pass Jamb and couldn't enter university because they are dull slaves.

Truly i tell you, a BSC Graduate with second class upper is more valuable than a HND Graduate with distinction and years of experience. Truly i say unto you, the former has a better career path than you..

I have many sad experiences of friends who spent years in Banking and later got BSC but were still paid a slave wage because they were employed with HND while a fresher trained on the job by them, who was employed with BSC, earned over 200,000NGN and kept earning higher than them.

Even if you later get BSC or MSC on the job, most Banks won't recognise you because that HND you started with, has dented the image their HR have of you. To them, you started as a failure and also to them, once a failure(those who started their career with HND), always a failure.

Asides the payment, the stigma is terrible believe me. You will train the new staff with your experience but you won't grow career wise.
You will be mocked at the end. Imagine the fresher you trained, becoming your team lead and scolding you just because you have HND.

If you ignore this message, you will learn the hard way.

Most contract workers in Banks and many organisations are polytechnic graduates. I warned my brother after he got admission to Yabatech that i see an apprentice as better than him. He was shocked! Today he has his BSC and he is doing fine.

Don't be a hurry and let that OND or HND be a stain to your life. God is fair to all but Nigeria government, politicians and lecturers are not fair to Nigerian polytecnic graduates. See them playing ping pong with converting polytechnics to degree awarding institutions or scraping Polytechnics entirely.

Don't let anyone play ping pong with your life or that of your children, friends or even enemy.

Your mantra in 2024 should be No gree for any polytechnic

A word is enough for the wise !!!
You made solid points but then, Polytechnics are best for engineering students.

Engineering students who finished from Polytechnics do better than those that finished from universities, that is why oil and gas industries prefer Polytechnic engineering graduates to university graduates.

So I will suggest that anybody that wants to study business, commercial and accounting related courses should do well and avoid Polytechnics.

Polytechnics are designed mostly for engineering and technology related courses and they do well in those fields more than universities

Meanwhile don't look down on Polytechnics completely because I know a lot of Polytechnic graduates who are big shots in oil and gas firms; from NLNG, Mobil, Shell, Saipem, Schlumberger, Oil Test, NNPC, etc.

I know some who are now top managers in multinational companies like NBC, Guinness, SabMiller, etc, and some even got jobs abroad no jokes. Like I know a lot of super successful Polytechnic graduates, and I am sure if they had continued to wait to pass JAMB, though some didn't go to Polytechnic because they couldn't pass JAMB, some intentionally went to Polytechnic out of family poverty, nobody to train them, so they just targeted Polytechnic to obtain OND to enable them get started in life.

So let's be careful when we make assumptions like this because it can discourage people and even undermine their lives.

There are Polytechnics in UK that offer HND, they have Polytechnics in USA, Europe and Canada that offer both degree and diploma certificates depending on what you want in life and where you are coming from.

Everybody must not finish from the university, it's so unfortunate that Nigerians are generally evil and bad people, we enjoy causing pains and inflicting sufferings on others without remorse, that is why some organizations and their ignorant management mistreat and foolishly discriminate HND graduates.

In my small company which I founded, my best two staffs finished from the Polytechnics no jokes. So let's be guided even though you must have written this out of good will to forewarn prospective Nigerian students based on your own life experience or stories heard.

You have said exactly my mind. Not only Oil and Gas but FMCG and those Telecommunication Sub Contractors always prefer HND graduates in Engineering. Normally, what are mostly needed in Nigeria are technicians and technologists because we don't design and build anything from the scratch. Most of the engineering jobs in Nigeria is repair and maintenance which the polytechnic Curriculum address

Definitely no Nigerian parent doing well financially and knowing how ill-structured Nigeria is and ill-minded Nigerians are will want his or her child to go to the Polytechnic in Nigeria unless something happened along the line, I understand you very well bro, I really do.

Thanks for the warnings at least it will guide people, especially those desiring to study commercial, business, accounting and other related courses, Polytechnic is not the right place to study such courses in Nigeria like you have already pointed out based on your real life experience.

But I will wrap up my own words like this; instead of writing JAMB every year just to enter the university, please try Polytechnic and have a plan to stop at OND level and then go for a direct entry into the university, trust me, most direct entry students from Polytechnics usually end up with first class or second class upper at the university.

Good morning.
I finished my OND program at Laspotech as a part-time student last year, and so I was planning to go for Direct Entry this year, which I have taken steps in registration process, but before then I heard about Jamb regularization, which I was told is for part-time students that did not gain admission directly through Jamb.
Then I went ahead to a CBT center to get it done last month, this was before I started any DE registration process. Just last week, I went to Jamb head Office at Ikoyi to begin the DE registration, of which I paid for the E-pin, but then I was told by one of the officials that in order to proceed with the registration, I would need to have my Jamb admission letter. As it stands, I don't have any Jamb admission letter, because I was thinking provided I have done the Jamb regularization I shouldn't have any issue of sort.

Pls what can I do about this?

You can't proceed with your DE adm full time because you did OND part-time programme.

Best solution is to write jamb and start from d scratch, there's no different between 100L/200L...

All d best.

3. Though not encouraged, you can still have it if you are interested
