Well, he eventually japa but on a different level. Also, he had a good job in the FinTech sector that exposed him to all that he needed, including the partnerships, for his subsequent ventures. He has always been exceptional.

Yeah. I won't say he jap-ed. He just opened an office in London and made the UK his 2nd home. Last time I saw him physically aside sm communication was around 2013 in VI, I believe he was still at Chams then, while I was searching for KLM office to buy ticket and eventually japa-ed myself a few days later.

Happy he is what he is now and doing great for himself. He was very bright at OAU too. In year two, he was getting paid by 5th year engr students to help them with final year projects.

Brian drain is a disease. West understand and they know how to milk the good ones as much as they can. Otherwise, all will be removed by the West! Is life better for the current nurses in the UK? You might argue that nurses in the US and Canada get rewarded brilliantly but i will tell you to wait until they get saturated and then they turn them to their current UK counterparts. West are the most enermies of the world but they disguise as the savoiur! Health professionals are key to every country and that is why we make our country relatively cheap to be educated.

That is why I am seriously against what Tinubu's government is doing trying so hard to stop Nigerian youths especially those in healthcare profession from migrating abroad to improve their career and lives.

Imagine Tinubu via the Ministry of Health instructed Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to shutdown verification portal for Nigerian Nurses and Midwives just to stop them from traveling abroad to work or study further, is that not wickedness of the highest order?

Please someone need to create a thread on this topic of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria shutting down their verification portal for Nigerian Nurses and Midwives just to stop them from migrating abroad to work or further their nursing education.

Such thread need to hit the front page as soon as possible, can you work on that?

Yup, in addition you unconsciously acquire huge academic and technical adaptability and flexibility.

You could study engineering, get bored with it then easily (keyword: easily) switch to medicine, law, pharmacy, accounting, software development, etc. This is not a case of just one or two special breeds doing that, engineering just make it easy to do that and it's just too common. Now, try switching to engineering from another field grin
This reminds me of the thread where someone dropped out of Physics or had a third class from Benue State University and went on to make a First Class in Philosophy from the same university. Also, finance especially octane-inclined ones prefer math and physics grads to economics/finance/business grads. Milton Friedman's son had his first degree in chemistry and physics and is today an economics and law professor.

Even the least in the class today has a better presentable certificate than these; little wonder the sudden death of secondary education.

Majority of them are children of the rich who can pay exorbitant school fees of private schools. At these private schools, they have internal arrangements for making their students excel in examinations. After school, their parents sponsor them further to either another private school or abroad. I can bet that there are students that excel just like the ones you have listed here but here in Nigeria struggling, you should be holistic in your sampling. School is no scam truly but higher education may be scam because is not everybody that is destined to further their education up to tertiary institutions, such people are good in something else.
To be fair, children from wealthy or upper middle-class parents will always do well in life. The book "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell emphasises such. The guidance, information, and proper nutrition play hooge roles in grooming a child for success. It is why I emphasise the two-parent household rather than the lovey-dovey co-parenting ideology aka baby-mama and baby papa dem.

At the same time, it sounds unfair, but not everyone who left secondary school MUST attend a university. The university should be left to exceptionally brilliant folks. On the other hand, vocational and technical institutions and career paths should be explored and developed so that people earn good incomes and live a dignified life. Japan, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands do this very well. It is why every country with a population above 50 million should have a strong manufacturing sector. We copied the UK's education system where every bloke there goes to the university including those with funny-looking names and has almost no manufacturing sector!

The argument by them is that we should not be subsidising other people's medical systems considering we don't have enough funds. That those who graduate from those institutions should work in Nigeria. I pity those who study at private universities such as Redeemer University and ABUAD. However, I argue that more medical universities should be built so we export our people to garner superior knowledge and experience. We should export the greatest resource we have and get more in remittances. India now reaps the benefit of some of her intellectual class returning as they cannot obtain Green Cards in the US. Also, most people who japa'd recently will return, especially as the backlash towards immigration increases. This is my prognostication.

But I have a reason why there seems to be opposition to our nurses leaving. If I talk, dem go say I be tribalist. As for verification, you stated in one of our conversations that the US does not care about it. Only the UK and maybe the Gulf States do. The alternative to such a blanket ban will be to have these medical professionals pay an exit fee as payment for the subsidised education or omit private universities from the ban. They will generate more as employees in the abroad.

Sorry, I cannot. The bans wey I chop because of this thread is enough. Any thread with references and pictures will be on my under-construction website. Nairaland's mods and Seun need to work on the anti-spam bot.
I know the reason Tinubu's APC government is seriously clamping down on Japa.

They are foolishly believing that it is diaspora Nigerians that are sponsoring Peter Obi and Obidient plus IPOB, so they want to reduce Japa at all cost but Tinubu and his ignorant cabinet forgot that it is even Yorubas that makeup the majority of those migrating via healthcare work, followed closely by Igbos.

Your suggestion of paying an exit fee is also a creative idea but the people under this APC government are mostly clueless and heartless

Which is very surprising because the majority of Nigerians who japa via structured routes (education and jobs) are his people. Usually, the remittances from diasporans go to their family members who reside in their dominant environment. So, why sabotage that process?

But it is not necessarily a Tinubu thing as the National Mathematic Centre stopped funding our math olympiad candidates and Buhari scrapped the PRESSID scholarship meant for first class graduates to study at the top 25 universities in the world. Some of the successful candidates under PRESSID campaigned and voted for Buhari in 2015. When Buhari entered, he scrapped everything and they suffered to pay their tuition fees. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Solid analysis Gerrad59

I read it all.

There's always a trend in excellence all things being equal.

Nigeria has good schools, get a good late primary /secondary school for your child, if you have to start saving from their birth please do. Intentional parenting: the schools these children attend matter a lot. Lots of mission and non mission secondary schools are doing so well with these children these days.

I also like the fact that the girls are flying so high.

Good one OP, as a parent I am so inspired.

we have them is just that they don't show themselves, there's one Abba auwal of Kano state, who scores 9As in the 80s, they couldn't believe it, they send for him to come Lagos and re-write the exams, he wrote it and got 9As still, but currently he is in US

Nobody shows themselves. People get the data from the exam board and publish their results. Generally, southern Nigeria does better than northern Nigeria; this isn't up for debate. Despite that, education isn't the only criterion for determining people's success in life.

Very true.

Any parents that can afford it should send their children to mission or quality private schools.

It's an investment that's worth it if they want their kids to fly high academically.

Public schools are not it at all.

If you can't afford private universities, atleast invest in good secondary schools for your kids.

And a good home tutor.
Even If you spend 60% of your income on your child's basic education, it's worth it.

Once the foundation is solid, they can then go on to UI, Unilag, Uniben, UNN of this world and do great things and change your family history.

That foundation is critical.

As a side note: Again, as I have written on Nairaland, Black Africans in the US, not necessarily African Americans, are enjoying the rights African Americans toiled for: https://www.nairaland.com/7695199/living-uk-life-immigrant-part-3/652#131355433; https://www.nairaland.com/8156136/helen-comperatore-widow-trump-rally/5#131005469
In fact, I even advised a Nigerian with Spanish nationality to choose Black during admissions for his children into American universities so as to take advantage of affirmative action policies: https://www.nairaland.com/8132873/japa-inside-japavery-confuse#130628245

So, it is not surprising that they, Black Africans, are the most vocal opponets against the removal of affirmative action as it eases their journeys to postions in elite universities and top companies. The same for the privileged Nigerians in Canada who are cupping away DEI slots which should be enjoyed by the Blacks who were historically disadvantaged in Canada, not people from Ijebu-Ode and Onitsha.

A study which shows that Black Africans rather than African Americans (native blacks in the US) populate elite universities in the US. “When Diversity for Diversity's Sake is not Enough: Should Black Immigrants Receive the Benefit of Affirmative Action at the Detriment of Native Blacks? https://www.repository.law.indiana.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1008&context=ijlse

I say this because there is no mention of Dority intl secondary school in the east.

There is no year between 2009- 2011 that students there failed to get minimum of 6 As.

In fact, if you got 6A's and 3B's in waec there as at 2010, you might find that you were not even top five amongst the guys in your set.

I build Nigerian made inverters here. Finding patronage or wholesalers is difficult. People rather buy the Chinese products. They frustrate all efforts. Mind you, everything from the research to building the business has been self sponsored. No government or friends or banks anywhere to nature a small dream.
I am given a choice to make today between been an electrician or driver in Canada or remaining here in this struggle, I won't remain here obviously
My sympathies.

As it is, no country can compete with the Chinese in manufacturing, not even the West. They grudgingly admit it. The best is to go to China to buy those goods and sell them to Nigeria. As your capital increases, open a factory in China and sell to the world. Inverters, aka solar related? Bros, sorry, you cannot compete with the Chinese.

As for friends or government funding, see, this life na as you waka come. Your best bet is family and as income improves, friends and the banks will come in. Non-family members need to see workings, not just cho cho cho (no harm intended). My advice is to enter China and suspend any innovation or invention. The Chinese have LOCKED everything in solar manufacturing.
