The Commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kwara State, Hajia Fatima Abiola-Popoola, has proposed that universities should require newly admitted students to undergo mandatory drug tests as part of their admission process.

She explained that this would “Serve as a preventive measure while offering early intervention and counselling for those already using drugs to prevent them from becoming problematic users”.

Hajia Abiola-Popoola disclosed this during a radio programme in Ilorin monitored by our correspondent. The NDLEA boss further expressed concern over the rising number of drug users in the country, particularly among females. She warned that this trend poses serious risks to families and society at large.

She said “A 2018 survey shows that 14.3 million people were using drugs in Nigeria. One out of 7 persons in Nigeria is a drug user and one out of 4 drug users is a woman.

“This shows that the society is in trouble because a woman is the administrator of the home.”

This is a good move! Mandatory drug test as a prerequisite for admission into the university isn't enough. In fact, ALL students should be made to take the test at the commencement of every academic year. If you fail the test, you return to your parents.

Just as seen in other serious countries, universities are supposed to be citadels of learning, not a place where junkies, criminals and cultists are groomed. undecided

shocked
Na wetin some men go still marry be this?

Thats cool tho, thats if the admitted students choose to stop using the drugs days before the test is being carried out.
What then happens after the test and admission? Is it impossible to return to that lifestyle?

They can kickstart it already, going forward, they will know what to tweak

Didn't you consider that 3 out of 4 are men? Can you not see your obvious bias? It's okay for a man to be abusing drugs, but it's not okay for a lady to be doing the same.

Parents will take their time to raise a good girl who will eventually find herself living in the house of a psycho and drug addict who calls himself her husband.

The federal government should adopt this policy (if they are serious about having a decent society). Those who are not comfortable with the policy should school in other countries.

Adopt this policy, why? What exactly does Nigeria gain from another yet useless policy targeting the people for Pete's sake? undecided

Exactly what come to mind. Whos is going to pay for the test? The poor parent or the government that is not fully funding education. She is just trying to make herself relevant.

Relevant by suggesting an obviously stewpid idea— a very distasteful scheme? This is an attempt to defraud students and ultimately the Nigerian people yet again! undecided

Lol
Mugu.
Many University students started smoking after they got admitted into the university.
Many didn't smoke before they got admission.

All the bad things I learnt in this life I learnt them during my university days.

NDLEA should do drug test for politicians that are contesting for political post because obviously many of them are drug users.
Akpabio is an example, after smoking loud and taking crack, he tops it with tramadol and become bold and agile then he will go to the chamber, face the media and start spewing rubbish.

Tramadol dey give person mind but it is very bad flee from it.

Not only at the entry level but I think a random drug test is also necessary for the lecturers and not only students in the institution..

We really need to clean up our school system.

With 5k to 10k, such test will be bypassed.

Even in higher institution, student who use drug mostly pay to pass exam.

Nigeria’s problem is not leaders. The problem is we citizens ourselves. Most are criminal minded. And these citizens will become leader tomorrow.

They should also work with INEC to screen candidates running for elective offices for drug addiction. That is more critical that screening students.
