I’m also a victim of this 2yrs ago.
A woman later helped me out inside airport, instead of 1m they asked me to pay. I later paid 450k for 4 pieces of iPhone 14pro

I already told the sender to call back the item. She just asked me to make the attempt of going to their office for her first if nothing positive show after this. Then she will

I doubt anything will change.
It is mainly duty they are charging you.
And the charge is based on worth of the item. I think 15%? Not sure.

For example, they'll check cost of new iPhone (same model), not really what the sender bought it, and use the amount to calculate the duty.

If you cist their office, they may be kind enough to show you how the said amount was reached. It wasn't randomly given to you

That is what it is. They didn't manufacture those values. Just that they use current exchange rate to calculate the duty

Lol you speak with a lot of ignorance.

All facilities in the Aiport belongs to the government, it is managed by them even when you take a lease on them.
Customs duty are done per piece and not in bulk. Thats why it is called Single Goods Declaration. Google SGD and don't lead peope astray

Are you also aware that any item that comes into the country is an import and duty must be paid? And for you to export out you must first clear the shipment?

Do you work or have you worked with customs or DHL?

If not don’t tell me what I know very much about. They manufactured that customs duty right their in their NACHO office.

Check customs website and see what they charge for items. What % is charged on phones and come back to see that what DHL presented that guy is not from customs.

How come cargo shippers don’t pay ridiculous amount of duties on phones and other gadgets? We have many shippers from USA, UK to Nigeria that ship phones and resell them here. The question is if this is how customs truly charge, would those people still be doing business after paying so much for just a few phones?

Last week my mother in-law was sent an iPhone 12, Samsung s23 and Samsung S4 watch from UK, the sender didn't inform me she will be using DHL and I didn't know she will be sending brand new phones. She once used DHL to send few items in the past, so she believed she wouldn't have any problem with them.

She said they charged her close to 200k there to have all 3 items sent.

Item got to Nigeria and I got a link to make a payment of over 1.2m to clear the items. They claim Nigeria custom took over the items after they noticed the original amount was not declared.

The sender declared a total amount of 1,200$.
DHL claimed custom reviewed the amount n inflated it 2500$
The sender after this provided them with screenshot of her purchase from Argos yet this fee wasn't reviewed.

I was advised to go to their stand for airport and negotiate with them which I'll do before the week runs out.

If you've experienced this before or know a way out or you know how I can bring down this amount, kindly drop comment. My number is also available Incase you want to DM. I don't want to go there without knowing how to go about this.

Thanks
Customs are wicked when it comes to this. I am not sure it has any solution unless you directly know the oga at the top.
They know that there is no one you can seek redress with. If the phone stays much longer, they will start charging demurrage on it. If you refuse to come for it after some time, they will claim that it has been auctioned.

Too bad but this is Nigeria: a country where citizens do not matter and where the law is skewed against ordinary people

don't pay that money let them return the items.
After they have returned them tell the sender to be sending them one after the other, make him package am well and write razor blade on top 😂.
After all razor don dey cost.

They said custom have seized the item, if they don't claim it, they will lose it to custom and there will be no returns.

All of una wey neva receive biro from America or Europe are the ones blowing hot and cold here.

After you shakara finish, show document till daikindonkon (aka thy kingdom come), receiver will still pay that moni. Unless he uses man-know-man to reduce it (if possible).

Dem neva even hint him of NDLEA o. They will still do their own.

I drag this matter 2 months, even the residency status of sender in America they ask and we provided. I was blowing hot and cold, attacking here and from USA. I use my social warrior status on twitter to fight the "injustice". All na story. Send it back? Ok, you will kukuma lose the whole thing in the labyrinth of Nigerian bureaucracy.

So, if you have no experience, keep your opinion to yourself. One musician said in Yoruba "the people wey do pass you plenty gaan; wan yapa oo, aiye po gan". Lol.

Abeg, please remember that anything you dey buy from abroad, people have gone through the stress to bring same in to sell in Nigeria. Patronize local and save everybody from ruin.

Meanwhile, OP go pay that moni o

Even the comptroller general of custom can't threatening me in this situation.
Don't pay a dime.
Write that you can't pay such ridiculous amount.
It should be reviewed and if they can't make you pay what you're capable of. THE ITEMS SHOULD BE RETURNED.

dhl is following a laid down rule by custom to avoid problems. It is easier for them. I sent phone, a computer and other items last year home.. and I got the email for extra payment to customs, because I added my email as the receiver. The amount wasn’t this much… but I guess this is the standard now. Better to send money than all this stress

The sender must be a newbie. No one is using DHL or post office to send packages to Nigeria because of custom duty. Next time he should use the local Nigerian freight company to ship items to Nigeria.

The maximum shipping cost he will pay for these same items will be less than £40, and you go to there office in Nigeria to pick it up.

Eeyah.....

There's an e-evaluation and e-invoicing platform that the CBN introduced to the customs and it uses a kind of universal pricing for the goods. Most times, people who br8ng in goods under-invoice to reduce customs rates to pay while those who export over-invoice so that they can attract export incentives. The e-evaluation and e-invoicing was introduced to curb this and was introduced during the Emefiele-led CBN era.
The best thing to do now is to pay or else your goods will not be released to you. If you go and settle the wrong guys you may end up with double jeopardy niyen.

It's always better to have an idea of the costs of these goods ahead before sending them because a bargain sale may not be the same as the price on the e-evaluation and e-invoicing platform.

This is very wrong of Nigeria’s government. You cannot be paying clearing fees on a gift. This ought to be meant for commercial deals.

You are confirming my point about your ignorance on this case. Just because people do it wrongly does not make it the correct thing to do. Plus this isn't a cargo shipment. JSYK.
There is no fixed cost for customs duty only fixed rates e.g 10% etc. You claim to know that what was sent was not from customs. How is that? Do you know the intricacies of computing and finalizing duty assessments till the exit note stage? I guess not. You are talking to someone with years of experience in this field, I own a customs duty software as well.. lol.

Duties are computed based on the cost of the item, insurance and freight and other landing cost. Mind you as an importing country, this is not done using your local currency as base. They use the foreign currency you purchase in, and then convert it to naira. So the higher your exchange rate and cost the higher the duty. See how govt policies can affect all strata of your life?

You should just learn from me, what I am telling you is real and correct. I am not arguing for anything. I know this process like the back of my palm.

Tell them you're going to ask DHL to send it back to where it was sent from.

A few months ago, I sent three brand-new laptops to my staff in Nigeria, but they couldn’t get them cleared. The shipment was passed from one agency to another. After paying the duty that Nigerian Customs charged, I was informed that the DSS had also seized it - suspected of being a proceed of crime. Even after bribing a DSS official, who they gave me his contact number, I was then told the laptops had been transferred to the drug agency.

It was a real nightmare until I petitioned UPS here in London, accusing them of taking no action against their staff in Nigeria while they are colluding with Customs, DSS, and Immigration to extort people sending goods to Nigeria. I informed them that I would be recalling the items if no action was taken. I sent a copy of my official complaint against UPS to all those corrupt agencies in Nigeria. Two days later, the DSS officer called to inform me that the laptops had been sent back to UPS for delivery to my office in Nigeria.
