"individually charge fees" can you explain dis?
Sheuns:

The item is in DHL custody and not with customs. Customs do not individually charge fees on items coming into the country. Tell the sender to go back to their office in UK and report the agent threatening. Do not bulge. Stand your ground.

It’s either they return it or they replace the items if it gets missing.

Pls, what is duty if i may ask?
Cmanforall:

Did he pay duty on those or is it DHL that will have to pay for it?

The charge may not be solely for the delivery

Just asking.

Tell them to return it. If they refuse, the sender has a right to file a claim over there in the DHL UK office and they’ll pay her. Don’t mind that uncouth Nigerian DHL staff threatening her.

The item is in DHL facility and not with customs. Don’t bend to their wills. They do the valuation and customs fees right in their office. Customs do not charge them per item but as bulk for duties.

Thank you for your question. You seem to be a humble person. Please keep up with your humility.

Duty is simply a type of tax charged on products being shipped across international borders. It is usually controlled by each country's customs authorities

We told you people not to allow tinubu the drug Barron to enter that office you l’aller did not listen. What are you expecting when Tinubu changed the functions of Customs to revenue raising agency. Tinubu finally found himself in a position he was eyeing for so many years. Tinubu is there for only his pockets and families. He’s allowing his associates and friends to steal as much as they can steal. His friends and associates are stealing 50% and he is stealing 100%

Last week my mother in-law was sent an iPhone 12, Samsung s23 and Samsung S4 watch from UK, the sender didn't inform me she will be using DHL and I didn't know she will be sending brand new phones. She once used DHL to send few items in the past, so she believed she wouldn't have any problem with them.

She said they charged her close to 200k there to have all 3 items sent.

Item got to Nigeria and I got a link to make a payment of over 1.2m to clear the items. They claim Nigeria custom took over the items after they noticed the original amount was not declared.

The sender declared a total amount of 1,200$.
DHL claimed custom reviewed the amount n inflated it 2500$
The sender after this provided them with screenshot of her purchase from Argos yet this fee wasn't reviewed.

I was advised to go to their stand for airport and negotiate with them which I'll do before the week runs out.

If you've experienced this before or know a way out or you know how I can bring down this amount, kindly drop comment. My number is also available Incase you want to DM. I don't want to go there without knowing how to go about this.

Thanks
£1100 worth of goods, that's damn expensive

Oga you’re only blowing grammar that we all know. Duties are charged by certain % of the value of goods declared by the importer. The op clearly showed the cost of those items in the screenshot. They were bought online. The seller or the store would provide proof of purchase for those items and that’s what is supposed to be used to calculate the duty fees.

1.2M naira divided by current rate of 1600 is $750. The item costs from the screenshots attached is $1433.66 when converted to USD.

Why would the customs charge you $750 for items worth $1433.66? They claimed they used the value of the items now. Those two phones are old phones and not brand new. Check on Apple website and see if you’ll find that particular iPhone 12 still selling there.

The second phone is S23FE it is clearly written in the description as “mint” that means it’s not a new phone.

How did DHL and customs come about the valuation they gave both phones to warrant a duty fee of $750?

Explain the intricacies that warrant the duty cost $750 based on the value they were purchased for and not some made up value by the DHL and customs as they claim.

You have refused to learn and obviously you don't know what you are talking about, but its fine. You just have to be humble and learn. I am tired trying to teach you.
As regards this case;
1. I can bet my ass that the shipper didn't declare the amount that was shown on the screenshots. Nigerians like to get around the system by undervaluing. Some even overvalue the cost so the courier company can pay them that incase of loss, but when duty is calculated, they cry.

2. Customs uses the market value of things that they find to be undervalued. So go check the prices of these items online. The price might tally.

3. Lastly if the duty was computed on the invoice value based on the screenshot, the duty to be paid is NGN 526,803. He can get this done if he follows up with them or present this to customs to review. If he can talk to a senior officer, it should be resolved or wait for feedback with the courier company.

Below is a breakdown of he is expected to pay using the invoice value

You correctly schooled that guy out of his ignorance. The way some Nigerians accept rubbish is mind blowing. that is why we are where we are now.

Lol. I noticed that Nigerians are easily swayed especially by people who seem to be on their side. We have been so beaten as a people that we can hold on to what seems like a lifeline even if its false hope. We should rather face the government who are in charge of these policies and vent to them.
Anyway its a learning curve for you. Its not rubbish I was spewing rather fact.

This is exactly the same situation I am presently in, I sent clothes of 179 pounds to my sister as a birthday gift, the asked me to pay 474k to clear which is close to 250pounds, I paid DHL 110 to send fro Nigeria to Uk.
I have sent receipt of the goods to DHL, but they responded today that Nigeria custom can not do anything.
I will just leave the clothes and give her the 250 pounds than giving the custom.
People should avoid DHL then.
They are definitely conniving with customs and others to CHEAT AND STEAL FROM PEOPLE.

PLEASE DON'T LEAVE YOUR ITEMS WITH THOSE BASTARDS.
RECALL THEM BACK AND USE ALL THIS LOCAL AND 3RD PARTY AGENTS. THEY'RE WAY CHEAPER AND STRESS-FREE.

Not correct people pay duties on gifts, except the item was shipped as DTP meaning DUTY AND TAXES PAID by the shipper and this is obviously not.

It can be contested if you can prove that the shipper bought the items for the amount you claimed. Receipts, evidence of payments will go a long wa

better option. that 1.2m can even buy those items in nigeria market.
smugglers with connections move their goods into Nigeria every week. these laws are to deter ordinary people from buying foreign goods.

If govt wants to issue Iphone 16 pro max to all every senator and HOR member, they will do it without stress. But the ordinary Nigerian will pay 5 times the cost of the phone to make same purchase.

this stuff is peculiar with DHL, other couriers don't experience this stuff. It think they are working in conjunction with customs to extort Nigerians. By right you are not supposed to pay any pickup fee, you've already paid $125 for sending, and even if you are paying any amount it shouldn't be upto half the worth of the goods that's plain robbery.
