Thanks so much.

Thank you for your question. You seem to be a humble person. Please keep up with your humility.

Duty is simply a type of tax charged on products being shipped across international borders. It is usually controlled by each country's customs authorities

It is the customs attached to the courier that does this. They are usually on the watch out for firearms, hard drugs but since there is a scarcity of these and like police they need money for upkeep, they usually place such crazy bills.

Do not be afraid. Don't fall for any gimmicks or explanations they make. Go with what you have. Example if they bill One Million Naira, go with 100k tell them that's what you have and stand your ground. They will accept it. I've done this over 30 times so I know

Be free with them when you get there. Don't show fear or naivety..

You are dealing with Customs attached with the courier not the courier per se.

That amount is to draw you physically to visit their location to negotiate how much you want to pay.

Last week my mother in-law was sent an iPhone 12, Samsung s23 and Samsung S4 watch from UK, the sender didn't inform me she will be using DHL and I didn't know she will be sending brand new phones. She once used DHL to send few items in the past, so she believed she wouldn't have any problem with them.

She said they charged her close to 200k there to have all 3 items sent.

Item got to Nigeria and I got a link to make a payment of over 1.2m to clear the items. They claim Nigeria custom took over the items after they noticed the original amount was not declared.

The sender declared a total amount of 1,200$.
DHL claimed custom reviewed the amount n inflated it 2500$
The sender after this provided them with screenshot of her purchase from Argos yet this fee wasn't reviewed.

I was advised to go to their stand for airport and negotiate with them which I'll do before the week runs out.

If you've experienced this before or know a way out or you know how I can bring down this amount, kindly drop comment. My number is also available Incase you want to DM. I don't want to go there without knowing how to go about this.

Thanks

If all else fails and they insist on paying, reach me and use the money buy the iPhone 12 and s23 from me. DHL be damned!

The sender requested they send it back. She was told its not with them anymore, d agent said it was handed over to custom. One of their agent even threatened the lady by saying even if she didn't collect the items, she will still pay the fee.
Unfortunately, that's just the gospel truth. Even If the sender recall it, since it is in custom's warehouse, she will have to pay the import duty first before it will be waybilled back to her. I had this same horrible experience last month. It was a frustrating experience, but at the end, I did collect my stuff. Drop your contact let me link you up or your twitter handle let me chat you with evidence of my cleared stuffs

Lol you speak with a lot of ignorance.

All facilities in the Aiport belongs to the government, it is managed by them even when you take a lease on them.
Customs duty are done per piece and not in bulk. Thats why it is called Single Goods Declaration. Google SGD and don't lead peope astray

Are you also aware that any item that comes into the country is an import and duty must be paid? And for you to export out you must first clear the shipment?

They don't know. I just dey laugh. I was in the same scenario last month

The sender must be a newbie. No one is using DHL or post office to send packages to Nigeria because of custom duty. Next time he should use the local Nigerian freight company to ship items to Nigeria.

The maximum shipping cost he will pay for these same items will be less than ยฃ40, and you go to there office in Nigeria to pick it up.
Pls, list examples of the Nigerian freight companies that ship from UK to Naija. I too suffer for DHL/Custom hand last month

You dont know Nigeria government that is why you are talking like this
Same thing happened to me, i even sent the receipt of the purchase from amazon, they refused and insisted that i must pay 473k to clear my goods. They extimated my goods to be 600 pounds, everything is even less than 180.
viqSmallz:

You have refused to learn and obviously you don't know what you are talking about, but its fine. You just have to be humble and learn. I am tired trying to teach you.
As regards this case;
1. I can bet my ass that the shipper didn't declare the amount that was shown on the screenshots. Nigerians like to get around the system by undervaluing. Some even overvalue the cost so the courier company can pay them that incase of loss, but when duty is calculated, they cry.

2. Customs uses the market value of things that they find to be undervalued. So go check the prices of these items online. The price might tally.

3. Lastly if the duty was computed on the invoice value based on the screenshot, the duty to be paid is NGN 526,803. He can get this done if he follows up with them or present this to customs to review. If he can talk to a senior officer, it should be resolved or wait for feedback with the courier company.

Below is a breakdown of he is expected to pay using the invoice value

I know them and how terrible they can be, but I have also seen people who have successfully corrected this.
I recently had to pay 1.2m for something I was to pay about 800k for. I paid because the package was urgent for a health purpose, if not I would have dragged it. I already sent a protest letter to the Area Comptroller, my loss anyway.

Things don't work as they are supposed to

Except you are buying "Used Ones" . If you're buying new ones, there's that certainty that you'll buy a substandard item.

Items that are shipped directly to Nigeria has quality compromise. Remember we have useless regulatory agencies here.

Most times I wonder the need to even send items to Nigeria, when you can send that courier money and it will be bought in Nigeria and have change

FuckSilly:

What's this one say?
That iPhone you want to buy in Nigeria, was it made in Nigeria? Was it not shipped too? Did the shipper pay such ridiculous amount?

Bro, if shipped by a company customs don't search the contents individually, rather the give you a fair charge than individual sending to their loved ones. You will even loose some items .

I'm telling you out of experience
