Just imagine the scam. They generated more than this and also from people who pays for light they never used..... How can you not make the prepared meter free and verily available for people while using estimated billings to scam innocent Nigerians. |

That is about 2.2 billion dollars. Meanwhile we need annual investments of 10 billion dollars to get to 24/7 power. The money is even too small when you consider it is from 2019 to date. 8 Likes |

JASONjnr: That is a profit of approx 700 billion naira yearly. Consider that we need something like 10 billion dollars or 15 trillion naira yearly to even get to somewhere around 24 hours daily power Consider that most discos don't make enough to pay tax . Consider that till first quarter 2024, most discos customers paid well below the cost of production Consider that three discos had to be taken over by the banks because debt Consider that government owes discos 1.7 trillion naira in unpaid subsidies Consider that at least 40% of consumers don't pay for the power they use That's why we can't have good things. Band A consumer make up 20% of all consumers of power. Most people have still been paying under the production cost. The thing is, if government was serious about letting the power sector operate in a free and open market, nothing stops them from making 5 trillion yearly Plus why should they give you meter free. How would they pay the meter manufacturing companies? Most of whom employ common Nigerians and have salaries to pay. Would you give people free stuff if you had a business? 8 Likes |

nairalanda1: I am using estimated bill..... I pay rough 50k monthly for a one bedroom flat...... Also, the corruption that is within the TCN is the reason why the power sector is where it is today. You shouldn't take excuses for these people. The essence of the bands created was to remove subsidy so that people using the light at a full range will pay for it. |

JASONjnr: The corruption is a symptom of the ultimate problem which is quite simply that electrical power is not sold at a cost reflective tarrif. Once you start doing subsidy and cheap things, corruption follows because at the end, it matters not how much you thief, government money is coming. Same thing does not happen with gsm because at the end, you make profits or you die. Mtel on the other hand collapsed because free government money and subsodsed price. It could not make enough of a profit to compete with the others, even glo. Let's not even forget nitel self. 8 Likes |

nairalanda1: Let's assume the government decides to stop subsidy on power tariff. What will happen to the profit from the sells of the power distribution from tax derivation? Same corruption will happen to it. It's the same thing happening with the oil sector, after subsidy was removed, the oil tycoons is now powerful as they control the total funds of the all crude sells. It doesn't matter if it's privatised or not. |

JASONjnr: Nope..no subsidy, no free government money, enough profits And because they now rely on being profitable, the effect of corruption would fall. Corruption of the type you fear would be very harmful for a company running sans subsides 8 Likes |

nairalanda1: What will then happen to the profit? |

JASONjnr: The profit would prolly be invested in expanding facilites for generation and transmisson....and also staff welfare, and attracting more investment. Like most businesses, you grow it to attract more profit. 2 Likes |
