BlueRayDick: I am with ibime fully, No be my money you go use follow passion. First study STEM courses wey go position you well for life, after food is on your table then start following passion Ibime is right, Most people avoid Sciences because they dont like Maths. In the real world, you cant avoid Maths for top jobs. When STEM guys wey no make the cut enter Law and begin use Math knowledge to do Law for you Its like we old head IT guys wey no wan run from coding, Until you realize that nowadays everything na code. STEM guys and coders don dey even enter Medicine, Law, after them don scatter Banking and Accounting field and snatch it from Accountants finish 1 Like |

BlueRayDick: When people say passion, Or I enjoy my job. My question is can you do it even if you dont get paid? An example of passion is watching football or supporting Bayern. Your job that pays you is probably something that is boring, you probably hate and wont touch it if not for money When you make that money then go do passion |

raumdeuter: Things have changed with tech now. People study philosophy , English language , political science , etc ; they take one or two tech courses and they are doing well for themselves . The era of measuring intelligence based on studying STEM courses has passed. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 7:03pm On Aug 26 |
raumdeuter: Passion actually means what u are comfortable doing. For example I had the best result in the JSCE exams during my JSS3 and I was placed in Science class automatically . I met with the VP academics and it took me a great deal of time to convince her I prefer commercial/social sciences . Eventually nobody in my set had a better result than I did in SSCE . I had passed GCE in SS2 and I slammed WAEC in SS3. None of the science students who were supposed to be more brilliant had anything close to my result . Today I work in an organization some STEM graduates wish they can actually work . Nothing spoil . I’m sure if u were my parent u would’ve insisted I stayed in the sciences even when I wasn’t really passionate about STEM. There are lot of students struggling with sciences simply because they were compelled to study STEM related courses. Almost every year u see year 1 medical students fail to proceed to medical school simply cos they are just not good enough for the medicine they opted for 3 Likes |

BlueRayDick: By the time you check the average Tech bros, You will realize almost 70% of them have STEM background and to really excel in it beyond the surface level you need some level of conceptualization that is usually sharpened by STEM courses In STEM you fit spend an entire lifetime studying things that are not relatable to normal human. By SS3, I can take govt exams without ever attending classes. Sometimes it just seem like current affairs to me and by reading enjoyable things like History, Newspaper and Novels you can scale History, Govt and Literature WAEC exams Normal Maths when you get to Square root of -1 you say impossible even most basic calculators will say Error. That square root of -1 Na 1 full semester course when you start studying complex numbers. Its that type of abstract reasoning of things you probably wont encounter in day to day that makes your brain sharp and see regular maths as moi-moi 4 Likes 1 Share |

raumdeuter: The thing is ; if u are smart then u are smart. If u are smart , u can understand concepts , u can do self study and learn about almost everything u want to learn about. Studying STEM is not the only guarantee that u will make it in life . Study what u are comfortable with and make sure u really know ur stuff. 2 Likes |

raumdeuter: I always laugh when social science talk about passion. STEM guys who just read newspapers, encyclopaedias and listen to radio for fun will pass all those social science courses with their eyes shut I have a A in Geography GCSE today without once ever reading for exam, not for one second. My Bs in English, English Literature and French exactly the same. STEM guys will eat all those course for breakfast with just 10% effort the arts guys will be putting in. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by raumdeuter: 7:14pm On Aug 26 |
BlueRayDick: Some things challenge your brains more than others. And if you find your comfort zone you will just coast until you meet bigger obstacle Life is hard and getting harder, the more harder stuffs you are exposed to early in life the more your brain develops and can conceptualize it No one has any guarantees but some things just position you better, even going to school is no guarantee 3 Likes |

BlueRayDick:I think the idea is, if you're smart or think you're smart enough to do STEM, do STEM. If you'd done some STEM course and excelled, you'd most likely still have been able to get the job and in a year or two of personal studies fix background issues needed to excel in the job you currently do. There's also an upside to doing social sciences and some management courses even though you have the brains for STEM...it's like a cheat sef, easy 1st or solid 2.1, which is good for job applications...though I struggle to see how it isn't you shortchanging yourself in the long run sha. 2 Likes |

Ibime: STEM go carry you go some area you will realize you are very close to madness, As a teenager I go dey toilet dey look floor tiles and be conceptualizing how covalent bonding and ionic bonding, why row 7 dey join with row1 or row 2 elements. When you will be using finger to draw imaginary things in space I come say, Yeeah I am close to madness if I continue this way. Na Geography we dey use relax, or to follow babe go attend Govt or Commerce class 2 Likes |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 7:23pm On Aug 26 |
Theflint1: Now the bold is where my point lies . Because someone chose to study mass comm doesn’t mean he’s dull or does not have the brains to do STEM. Studying a STEM related course does not guarantee ur success in life ; the world has evolved past that kind of reasoning . Look at someone like Wole Soyinka , he rose to the pinnacle of his career in the arts. There are hundreds of his contemporaries who are in the sciences that nobody even hear their name beyond their village or community for being great. People can follow their passion in non STEM related courses and rise to great heights . I’ve seen people that studied STEM related courses and are not even smart. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 7:28pm On Aug 26 |
raumdeuter: Anybody can pass any test if they have the brains and study for the test. All those aptitude tests that multinationals , big 4 and banks use to sieve chaff out of job applicants ; people who studied art courses pass it too. No big deal. There’s nothing wrong in advising ur ward to study STEM course but if he or she prefers art/social sciences ; it makes no sense forcing them to do STEM. So far ur pikin no talk say him wan do LGBTQ ambassador , u are safe 😂 |

raumdeuter: Damn right, those courses are what we use to step down or relax brain small My first degree is in Maths with Economics. The economics was 1/4 of the course. Because of scheduling issues the economics classes were always clashing with the Maths modules or on a Wednesday afternoon when everyone else has shut down for Sports activities when we travel to other unis to play football matches. I barely attended Economics classes but will sometimes go to what they call study session (I've forgotten what they call it, it's where you will be working through questions in the presence of a PHD student monitoring the class but lectures aren't being delivered). I will be seeing guys in those classes that haven't seen me all year. I will just come in, solve some breakeven or price-elasticity questions, finish all the questions in like 15 minutes, and the full-time Econs students will now come and be asking me to teach them. Meanwhile I'm just meeting the concept for the first time but based on Maths, if you sabi any kind of simultaneous equations or linear algebra, those questions will be like piece of cake. I just dey laugh. I can count on hands the number of times I attended Economics classes throughout my whole degree and it didn't stop me acing the Econs section of my degree. I no come rate my Econs classmates at all, or any social sciences after few months. 9 Likes |

I’d say if you can do a STEM course, you should probably do it. There are intangibles you pick up that are useful in any situation. Intangibles such as reasoning from first principles, optimisation etc Also, fundamentally the world is a competitive marketplace. If you’re sure you have enough literature talent to become the next R.L Stine or Steven King, then stay in your social sciences field but if not, just remember the competition is brutal. An example, I have a friend from my Uni days who just completed his Bachelors in Medicine and Surgery. This niqqa is also really versed in Android/Web/Machine Learning and has years of experience there. He asked me to go through his CV and I was like, "only problem i see in your CV is that you’ve got too much credentials" Imagine you carry your History and Religious studies degree follow this kain person find work 9 Likes |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 8:16pm On Aug 26 |
DeadPresidents: The crux of the matter is ; in Nigeria if u study STEM related courses , ur chances of landing a STEM related is not high because there are few STEM related jobs out there. Eventually u will have to drag jobs with non-STEM graduates . Trust me, if u meet people who studied non-STEM related courses to drag job, ur chances of getting the job is same as theirs . I mean the smart ones. It’s not like ur STEM degree suddenly makes u better than them in any way. Anybody who thinks otherwise is just massaging his STEM ego. A student who graduates with 5.0 CGPA in history & international relations and another who graduates with 5.0 in Mathematics have equal chances of landing a graduate trainee role simply because they are both smart. |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Theflint1(m): 8:41pm On Aug 26 |
BlueRayDick:The point is, your average Math grad is smarter than your average history and international relations grad (keyword being average)...when the bar isn't graduate trainee post, you'd see the difference between that your 5.0 Math grad and the History and International Relations 5.0 grad. Courses differ in difficulty levels, consequently graduates from the more difficult courses are on the average smarter than graduates from less difficult courses. 8 Likes |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 8:43pm On Aug 26 |
izzou: If the graduate trainee role in Schlumerger is to fill the a non-engineering role , then the History graduate has the same chance as any other person. |

Theflint1: First and foremost what do u mean by average. Define average . |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 8:48pm On Aug 26 |
BlueRayDick: If it is to fill an engineering role nko? I guess that's the part you are not paying attention to. Anybody who excels in any field is bright, but also, there's some advantage that STEM bound students have because of the subjects they have taken A STEM student can slot in to a non-engineering field, but it is difficult for the NON STEM student. They both have an equal chance for a non engineering role. Switch the role, and the history student automatically is out. 9 Likes |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by DeadPresidents: 8:49pm On Aug 26 |
BlueRayDick: Depends on the company calibre. You’re not getting a graduate trainee role at Goldman Sachs with a 5.0 in History and International relations. Ultimately both graduates will have to ace interviews but preselection means the Historian will be left in the past whilst the mathematician plots a trajectory to the offer letter 4 Likes |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by raumdeuter: 8:50pm On Aug 26 |
BlueRayDick: The STEM graduate will fight for Schlumberger Process Engineer, Schlum Admin staff role role and still fight for your EY, Access Bank entry level role While the History grad cannot compete for the Schlumberger Process Engineer role Basically The STEM grad can compete for all 4 positions while the History guy can compete for only 3. Those sef, their aptitude tests once it goes towards Maths favor the STEM guy. Unless if the aptitude test s about History |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by raumdeuter: 8:51pm On Aug 26 |
DeadPresidents: Goldman will throw you all(STEM and History grad) into Maths / Quantitative reasoning tests and these favor the STEM guys more because of years of rigorous Maths based curriculum Some actually many roles even state that they prefer Quantitative based degrees 7 Likes |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 8:54pm On Aug 26 |
izzou: U probably didn’t follow the discussion from the onset. My initial post to Ibime was that there’s no need to keep bashing people who choose to study non-STEM courses. He’s bashing non-STEM courses because he thinks most of those courses are useless. Now I pointed it out to him that most people who studied STEM courses in Nigeria usually end up doing jobs that are non-STEM related because Naija is not a place where STEM really thrives like that. Like u will have a degree that u won’t be able to work in that field but still end up doing non-STEM jobs like auditing , accounting , HR, & Admin etc. Why bash people who chose to study non-STEM courses who already know everybody will still end up in non-STEM job market ? I’m not disputing the fact that History graduate cannot fill the role of an engineer , but where the engineering job Dey ? |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 8:55pm On Aug 26 |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 8:56pm On Aug 26 |
raumdeuter: How many schlumberger , Shell, Chevron , etc are in Nigeria to absorb 1/64 of graduates in STEM related courses ? Egbon u studied a STEM course , I’m sure u worked in non-STEM before u relocated . That’s my point |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Theflint1(m): 9:00pm On Aug 26 |
BlueRayDick:The conversation has tethered on comparing STEM vs non-STEM grads a bit sha... But if a non-STEM course gives you zero advantage over a STEM grad for those non-STEM jobs, isn't it better to kuku do the STEM course and have more options available to you? |
