LASG BEGINS PROCESS OF TURNING LASUCOM INTO MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

… Conveys High-Powered Stakeholders’ Parley

In furtherance of efforts by the administration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to bequeath an international standard college of medicine and excellent healthcare system to the people of Lagos state, the government through the Ministries of Tertiary Education, Health and Lagos State University College Of Medicine (LASUCOM) has convened a meeting with critical stakeholders on the establishment of a stand-alone medical university in Lagos state.

Speaking at the forum held recently in Ikeja, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule said the objective of the meeting was to ensure Lagos has a medical university capable of bridging the existing gap in the training of medical personnel and improving the healthcare delivery system in the state.

Sule reiterated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's commitment to improve the capacity building of medical doctors and allied professions in the state to global standards. He said the present administration has invested enormous human capital and financial resources in the Lagos State College of Medicine (LASUCOM) to align with the best global standards to strengthen the state healthcare system.

The Commissioner averred that despite the state government investment in the current Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) and giant strides recorded, the institution is still beset with various challenges due to the increase in population, students` admission, healthcare demand, infrastructure expansion and emigration of health workers.

Therefore, he urged the forum to fashion an approach, explore empirical solutions and practical knowledge and make pragmatic steps for a successful takeoff of the University of Medicine and Health Sciences that will meet the medical yearning of the state and Nigeria in general.

In his submissions, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi said the state is blessed with enough health and medical infrastructures and facilities to run a successful university of medicine.

In a similar vein, the Provost of Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Professor Abiodun Adewuya assured of qualified personnel who are well motivated and enthusiastic to make the upcoming stand-alone University of Medicine a pride for the state and Nigeria in terms of professionalism and standards.

Other stakeholders at the meeting, assured the state government of their ministries' readiness, support and cooperation for the multi-campuses University of Medical and Health Sciences which is billed to commence admission in the 2024/2025 session, considering the number of existing qualified medical staff and facilities abounding in all divisions of the state for a successful take-off.

The stakeholders meeting was part of the intellectuals and professionals' engagement carefully planned by the Ministries of Tertiary Education, Health and LASUCOM as a strategy towards exploring empirical and practical knowledge for the successful take-off of the Multi-Campuses University of Medicine and Health Sciences that will meet the medical needs of the state, Nigeria through the provision of healthcare to illuminate and dissect the causes, effect and dimensions of medical issues that reflect our state and national medical needs.

How many universities now owned by one state and yet no notable impact. For example, even if they build a million medical universities, Tinubu will still fly overseas if he gets a headache.

Though it will be a great development but the College of Medicine LASUTH is already the training school of Faculty of Medical Sciences of the LASU? What am I not getting correct?

This is commendable. Lagos seems to be the only state with future plans. Most states are still grappling to catch up with current realities, meanwhile Lagos state is already into the future.

Someone asked what he’s not getting correct. Well, the answer is in the post.

All you have to do is remove the hatred, tribalism, any bigotry from your heart, and then maybe, just maybe, you might be able to understand the post better.

Yes, there is LASUTH. But according to the post, the LASG want this to be a stand-alone medical university, not one under the supervision or control of the universities.

Objective:

To bridge the existing gap in the training of medical personnel and improve healthcare delivery system in the state.

The new stand-alone medical university would take care of the challenges the current LASUCOM is still beset with. The challenges includes increase in population, student’s admission, healthcare demand, infrastructure expansion, etc.

LASUCOM is the college of medicine under LASU, LASUTH is the teaching hospital use by LASUCOM to teach medical students

So LASUCOM together with LASUTH will become university of medicine independent from LASU.

Good step in right direction. Lagos is working.
But is there still space to build structure in that LASUTH, the place looks "all occupied " cool

What is the function of LASUCOM now. What will be it's function after this restructuring?

Nice one

But this might affect the global rankings of LASU. other state universities with medical faculties may now rank higher than LASU.

School ranking is very important. Highly ranked schools tend to attract more local and international talents.

What if Lagos is our catchment area and we see how much of a useless rogue Tinubu is compared to Jakande of just four years without choking us with IGR

Do you not scold your child for misbehaving?

Realdeals:
1. The first governor to present a billion Naira state budget in Nigeria.

2. He phased out the shift system in Lagos schools in three months. He built functional classrooms to absorb those who only attend schools for three hours a day.

3. He opened up what is now known as the Lekki Corridor.

4. He built the biggest Housing estate by a state government at Abesan, along with five other estates.

5. He built LASU, LACOED, LASPOTECH and Technical schools to absorb the products of the free education policy.

6 He built General Hospitals and Health centers in all the five divisions of Lagos. He also upgraded General Hospital Ikeja to the Medical arm of LASU.

7. He created the Agric hub at Oko Oba. He also created similar hubs in Ikorodu, Epe and Badagry.

8. His government’s strict adherence to the party manifesto of Free Education, Free Health care, Rural integration and Housing for all, along with other UPN governors, created the largest pool of human resources in Nigeria.

9. He moved the Lagos State Government Secretariat from PWD to Alausa, which he built from scratch. He also lived in his personal house and drove his personal car throughout his tenure.

Thanks for this explanation, but if I may ask, does that mean LASU will not have a faculty of medicine again, since they'll be carved out to form a new University?

I love the fact Lagos is stabdardising University education, from LASUED to LASUSTECH and now this... It remains a university of agriculture, maybe somewhere in Epe

Next is to make sure departments are reshuffled... If a school is a university of education, let them concentrate on education, if it's about agriculture, let them concentrate on that... Not like some schools that are specific, but want to offer ALL courses

Also, someone should help us tell LASUED to start postgraduate programmes in Education... They already have the staff and structures on ground...
