Many confuse flat roof for hidden roof -

A flat roof has an extremely low pitch and is almost horizontally level. Hidden/flat roofs This type of roof has a slope of less than 10 degrees and is either horizontal or nearly horizontal.

Many hammer 🔨 a lot on what are the disadvantages of hidden roof,now let me draw your attention to it ,

Hidden roof damage is similar to a ticking time bomb,(Especially when wrongly handled) quietly biding its time until it causes significant harm.

The first one is better. Build it and have peace of mind, but the second one needs continuous maintenance.
Building such in southern part of the country is not a good idea due to rain fall.

History in Nigeria has shown that if you don't do the flat roof properly, you will end up with a leaky roof which will make you to compulsorily embark on an extra expenses journey for a sloppy roof to cover the flat roof

Aesthetically the sloppy one is better!

I would like to have a penthouse where we can chill or even celebrate once in a while up there!

Also we can have some solar installations and others up there easily!

Flat/hidden makes the house look like a filling station.

None is actually better than d other. Preferences differ.
However, to me,
Design 1: charging solar power will be influenced by d direction of sunrise and sunset, esp periods when there's neither rain nor sunshine while 2 may require occasional repairs during raining seasons due to leaks.

By the way, I think flat roofs are finer for buildings that are storeyed, while "send down the rain" roofs are good for houses that aren't storeyed.

As an architect, Heap roof is finer BUT more expensive, flat roof is far cheaper.

I prefer sloppy roof although it's usually more expensive

Sloopy is far better, most especially in this country where sun will hammer you, so the distance to the room with thr roof is higher, which reduced penetrative of sun inside the room..

Sloopy has alot of advantage over flat, flat is less expensive though....

A properly constructed flat roof is 100 times better than sloppy roof.


I shudder in disgust when I see sloppy roofs built almost the same height as the main building. Waste of money.

For those talking about rain, what is the slope ratio needed for water to drain easily?

Those extremely sloppy roofs are for areas with snow fall. So the snow will fall off easily.
