Sloppy roof type.

Pros:
Low water retention
Low heat penetration as space in between is large
Contains more space for accessories like solar panels, water collectors, etc
In-between space could serve as storage unit.
Low long term maintenance cost
Noise cancellation effect

Cons:
High initial installation cost.
House looks bulky

Flat roof:

Pros.
Low initial installation cost
Better outlook and less bulky building

Cons.
High long term maintenance cost as Air conditioners are needed.
High water retention
High heat penetration
High noise effect as space/vacuum in-between very small.

Honestly, I made the high sloppy roof choice, even though it costs like x4 the installation cost unlike the flat roof type.

Hidden roof damage is similar to a ticking time bomb,(Especially when wrongly handled) quietly biding its time until it causes significant harm.

the sloped roof is a complete waste of money and has no purpose in tropical countries. it is the result of people doing copy and paste of western buildings. what is called rote learning - where you imitate without understanding

a sloping roof will ensure that snow will either slide down or be easily pushed down. on a flat or close to flat roof, snow will collect until the weight can make the roof members collapse. we do not have that problem in nigeria as it does not snow here

those roofs have no place here and are a waste of money. they are also more trouble than they are worth because carpenters can easly fk them up.

however, because they cost more artisans and architects are likely to promote them to clients as they mean more money

as nigerans are obsessed with meaningless status symbols, they will also buy into the hype of building a big man house

let no one fuud you with bs about this roofs failures are easier to detect

these are teh two roofs - which is more complex and therefore more prone to failure?

what is even worse is that because nigeria is a tropical country, all that space above the ceiling is wasted. abroad it would be used as an attic, but in nigeria that area would be a massive heat ink and unusable

Sloppy is actually better, helps with cooling, gives presence to the structure. If winds are not a problem its the better option.
People are venturing into flat roof because of the economic situation in the country.

Not true. It's when you employ an incompetent carpenter to mount your roof, note that leaking errors are easier to fix in high roofs, than in flat roofs.

Says who......leave the waste of materials in Nigeria. High roofs abroad is for attics and heat generation. I wonder why we love wasting resources in this country.

Trust me, a flat roof has a higher propensity to attract serious problems that may require a lot of cash to fix, when compared with a slanted/sloping roof. For instance, there’s a higher chance for water to pool on a flat roof if not done right, which could weaken the structure over a period of time, and increase its susceptibility to leak, while the slanted roof would normally drain quicker/more efficiently. If you’ve got deep pockets and the mind to withstand the sudden shock that comes with maintaining a flat roof, then by all means go for it. Otherwise, me I go humbly respect myself under this tinubu government and go with a slanted roof

I was made to understand that when the roof is high it brings about coolness in the home because there is considerable space in-between the roof and the ceiling unlike the flat roof where the space between roof and ceiling is very small hence the home will be hotter during hot periods

Our local preferences have not been good to us as a people. Actually we don't know the best for us. We just love buying things in this country without producing and that is a problem to us. Our design should be functional

hip roof is better than flat roof and more comfortable. The only advantage flat roof has is the cheap installation. You cannot comfortably have a discussion in a flat roof when there is a huge down pour. The house will be always hot, if not properly installed, you will experience leaks.

.. sloppy roof is good because of the rain the water will drain down direct to the floor of the compound....water will not stay on the roof...but flat roof during rain some water will stay on the roof which can cause leakages in the house

Sloppy roof is good because during rain the water goes down direct to the floor of the compound without any water staying on top of the roof..but flat roof during rain the water some water will stay on the roof which can later cause leakages some parts of the house

Heap Roof:
1. Hip roof brings out the beauty & enhance the aesthetics of a beauty.

2. It has low maintenance as the pitch & King-post are high which drives water away faster so therefore has no room for leakages.

3. If has special advantage against Thermal effect, meaning it doesn't emit heat into the rooms to cause discomfort as it has ample vacuum to accumulate heat.

FLAT ROOF:
1. Is very cheap to construct as it doesn't need much roof members.

2. It has one unique beauty it imposes on building especially storey buildings.

3. It provide ample space for some installations e.g. Solar panels.

Heap Roof is always better sha

Will the sloppy one not leak too?

Your first explanation on solar, i dont understand what you saying there.
mignone:
None is actually better than d other. Preferences differ.
However, to me,
Design 1: charging solar power will be influenced by d direction of sunrise and sunset, esp periods when there's neither rain nor sunshine while 2 may require occasional repairs during raining seasons due to leaks.

But they are structures that can be put in flat roofs to drain water from it.

High roof is for heat generation when there is snow abroad and people need a space of heat. The space within the high roof wood works is useless in Nigeria. If U say high roof is to help cooling within the house, it is 120% wrong because what cools the house is cross ventilation within the walls of the room..air coming In and passing out. What happens in the roof stays in the roof. I really wonder where this idea came from...

leaks in flat roofs usually occur at sides where the roof meets the wall. Also flat roof have the propensity to have have algae and weed growing on the roof. Furthermore, your roof is likely to corrode quickly because it takes a longer period for rain water to drain.
