you know as well as i do that border controls will continue to fail
those directives by ppmc officials [no jerrycans in stations, no peddling by stations) also failed
any form of petrol subsidy is going to fail because multiple nigerians will turn it into a hustle

it is the same way we cannot fix oil theft

police, customs, frsc, army - they will simply collect their cut and send the smugglers on their way.

50% of the current problem is because it is more profitable to move fuel to the border rather than sell here. if i buy fuel from mobil at 620 and sell it in togo at 1300, it is good business for me. that is what diversion is.

as a 101% hustler, you know that all border controls are as effective as police checkpoints.

You are looking at it from one side.

As the naira continues to fall, it will always be profitable to sell in Togo. Even at 855, it is profitable.

So a poor man in Sokoto should buy fuel at 1500 per litre, because we don't want smugglers to carry fuel?

Is this really the best solution

i understand exactly what you are saying. but i also understand that it is nigerians who are supposed to man the border. nigerians who are supposed to enforce pump integrity, nigerians who are supposed to monitor stations.

govt said no selling in jerrycans. all that happened was those who legit had to buy had to pay bribe. for those who are peddling business continues . whatver policy put in place - nigerians will still fk it up because right now, pms is a big hustle. you will be queuing in station and see these women with 5 50 litre jerry cans move to front of queue.

on the regular.

The issue is that the government cannot afford to subsidise fuel anymore.
The corruption around subsidy including the fuel price arbritrage shenanigans was a small price to pay when maintaining fuel subsidy was a priority to the government.

The real thing to be concerned about is that the government is so broke, its actually taking drastic steps to combat inefficiencies.

No it's because of his arrogance
The same deal gala are offering is almost as Chelsea own yet he refused

But he's getting paid the money he deserves.
Chelsea will still go back for him in January and pay him the money that you are calling him arrogant for.

And yes he is arrogant, he is worth the arrogance 😁

if they dont reach the actual price, the smuggling will continue.

it is what it is, and it is 101% fked up

all this talk about banning jerrycans, stopping people with jerrycans in their cars, is about curbing smuggling.

quite literally they are doing diversion in stations.

black marketers come with 5 to 10 50 litre jerrycans even when there is no scarcity

The problem is twofold.

1. We failed to fix the electricity deficit.
2. We can't wean Nigerians off cheap energy without something else picking the slack.

Fixing electricity and pushing gas as a relatively affordable alternative are both very capital and time-intensive endeavors.
We are essentially stuck. Capital best utilized in fixing electricity is being expended on subsidy.

They'd slowly raise gasoline prices until it hits parity. Now it's 850. Early next year, it'll be 1100.
I pressed for a 100K minimum wage partly for this reason.

NNPC is rolling out cng but like you said it is capital intensive and nnpc as a company is run like a federal parastatal. It may actually be better for their performance if their retail is actually ovh energy and that culture takes over.

The uncomfortable truth is that the poor man in Sokoto should buy fuel at 1500 per liter.
That is the fair market price.

Say your relative is running a store.
You may get merchandise at F&F discount. A regular customer will get at cost price + profit margin. Your relative makes less profit on you.

Now let's run an hypothetical where your relative buys the product at N1000.
Sells it to you at N600. That's a loss of N400.
Let's go further. You start collecting more products than you need at N600 and reselling them on the open market at N1300.
How long will your relative remain in business?

We've structured our economy to run on subsidized gasoline and it is unsustainable.
If we were a country of 5 million people, it wouldn't be a big deal.
The trouble is how to fix this debacle without sparking widespread unrest.

Is there any data on how much fuel is lost through smuggling daily?

In theory ppmc and nmpdra should get records from all filling stations of petrol sold. So on paper it is simply matching fuel sold at depots to fuel sold at stations.

All majors and most independents will keep records as they are tracking their inventory, sales and profits.

Matching product volume in stations to product volume from depots would account for truck diversion.

However there is no way of telling how much fuel is sold by stations to obvious smugglers or hustlers.

A motivated and educated security apparatus should easily be able to track down diverted fuel. Even if you don't man the borders you can use satellite imagery.

But in the end too many people in the chain are getting paid so here we are.

Right now, as we have this refinery working, it will show the true consumption of Nigeria. We can track every single loaded truck, and we try as much as possible to track loaded ships.

.....DR PMS is now available. Let's wait and see how it goes, but I am so hopeful Prosperity is close.

Nigeria sell crude oil to them in Naira, in return they will PMS to Nigerians in Naira. A big relief on fx, like 40% of our fx go to PMS importation.

Prosperity is within the reach, we are so close more than few months ago.
