70 Years-Old Father Weeps As Hospital Denies Him Access To Daughter’s Corpse For Four Months

A Seventy-Six-Year-Old Man, Mr Agwu Okorie Sampson has alleged that he has been denied access to the corpse of his daughter, Chidinma Okorie Sampson who he claimed died on March 10, 2024.

The aged man, who spoke to Journalists in tears at Azikiwe road in Umuahia on Thursday, alleged that the management of the Mother Mary Mission Hospital in Umuahia has not allowed him to see the condition of his daughter’s corpse because of his inability to complete the medical bills given to him by the hospital.

According to him, his late 23-year-old daughter, Chidinma was admitted for medical treatment in February which included a prescribed 20-day Chemotherapy session.

He explained that his daughter, who was a hair stylist, died on March 10, 2024, the 19th day of the prescribed Chemotherapy session she was undergoing.

He added that out of about 1.5 million naira medical bills given to him to pay, his family was only able to pay about 800,000 while sourcing for other means to pay the remaining part to enable him take his daughter’s corpse for burial.

Mr Sampson who said that the management of the hospital has promised to slash about N250,00 from the remaining medical bill, appealed to the Abia State government and concerned individuals to intervene on his behalf and prevail on the hospital to allow him see his daughter’s body in mortuary while sourcing for the money to pay for the remaining bill.

He cried out that he may soon die of frustration and heartbreak.

I want to see my daughter’s corpse. Let them allow me access to her corpse because I may soon die of heartbreak and frustration.

Let them allow me to at least see her while I am looking for means to gather the remaining money to pay the bills”, he cried.

Responding to the allegations, the management of the hospital which spoke through Temple Onuoha, said the bereaved father is owing them some money.

“Yes, he owes us some money. He is owing us
”, Mr Temple Onuoha simply told DAILY POST on Thursday.

But when asked to comment on the allegations that the hospital is denying the Sampson family access to their daughter’s corpse, he declined to respond, promising to speak the next day.

Further messages and phone calls put across to him on Friday to speak on the claims by the father of the deceased, were not returned or responded to.

Hardship is allover and not in SW or north alone. Let's stop politicising sensitive issues and hold our leaders responsible collectively. In a country that goes to stone spirit with billions, denying a man the corpse of his daughter shouldnt be in the news.

This is the height of wickedness and madness! Maybe the hospital wants to sell the corpse to recover their money.

Its business not callousness. They are even good people to agree to treat the daughter without complete payment like some others. Hope when you have have a business you can service customers without any payment and still stay in business.

The article talked about chemotherapy so leave the guy/woman.
It's just negative bias against Nigerian health services as if we don't have a government

Doing business does not mean one should have a heart of stone, the man is mourning the loss already, what does it change for the management if the man sees her?

Presently I am suspecting foul play, because it looks like they are hiding something, there is no where in the world you can justify what the hospital is doing, they told you your daughter is dead and you say as her father you just want to see and confirm and they tell you you cannot confirm till you bring money...

It is very suspicious, did they do something to her that they are hiding?

There is nothing here to justify, he is not stealing the body, besides he has paid over half which means he is not running away from the responsibility...

May her soul rest in peace and may help locate the man quickly...

20 day chemo indicates she most likely had severe cancer which had spread.
Probably why she died.

Unfortunately true.

I once worked for a man who had a hospital in a rural area. The hospital was struggling atimes because people would not pay their bills, even after promising to do so. Meanwhile he had workers to pay, a family to feed, and materials for day to day use to buy.

E no easy run hospital in NIgeria. That is why some of them are very wicked when it comes to bills. If they are not wicked, they will shut down...like one man I knew of who after trying to run a clinic in his hometown for a year or two, closed it down and jakpad. It was too costly to run. And that was back in 2008.
